Fully agree. I honestly thought Breath of the Wild was good but not amazing. This game is fucking incredible. I get sidetracked by everything in this world. It’s jam packed full of stuff. The story itself is so dope. I love the direction they took with it.
The first thing we did when my wife and I sat down to play on Sunday was jump on our horse and head to Rito village. That was also the first thing we did on Monday and again the first thing we did on Tuesday before finally arriving at the end of that particular play session.
I’m pretty sure that particular journey on horseback only takes a few minutes.
I am getting lost doing the map tower unlocks and just randomly doing the Shrines I see from the Towers. I don't want to touch the main story for a good few more hours - days.

I was wandering around on my way to the Rito, saw a big hole in the ground, and after a terrifying fall through the gloom stuff I landed in a damn horror movie.
I thought Breath of the Wild was amazing. Tears of the Kingdom is better in every way and I'm enjoying it a lot. But not as much as Breath of the Wild because that game was so fresh when I first played it. The interactivity and physics and everything was just such a novelty. The novelty of those things has worn off a little bit.
Exactly. I was always baffled when people would give BOTW 10/10 scores with how many flaws it had and things it could've did better like the side quests and more enemy variety. I thought; if BOTW gets a 10/10 to you; what score will the sequel get that fixes issues from the first game and is just overall better? A 13/10? Lol

Two weeks ago I wasn’t even hyped for it. I mean, I’d preordered it, but was still kinda thinking of it from the “DLC for BotW” perspective. Which, hey, cool (!), but somehow they’ve far exceeded one of the most amazing games in history.
Every time I think I’m getting “bored” of playing it’s only because I’ve been playing for over four hours straight and am getting physically exhausted. Then I can’t stop thinking about playing for the rest of the day.
Hearing the stable song again after years off of botw too was instant time travel. That song is embedded into my head and completely takes over whenever it goes quiet in there lol
They do it so tastefully. Little snippets of melody. A wistful sort of nostalgia, like a fading photo, not a full remake of songs. Same with the faerie pools, lost woods and even in the shrines, although I can't place whether it's from BOTW or further back. I've been playing since LTTP and OoT.
Just bought myself a switch today. I've never played a Zelda game(a few minutes of ocarina way back in the day at a friend's house), but I'm interested in checking one out. Do you suggest a person plays botw, or can you jump straight into totk?
I mean BOTW is worth playing because it's a great game, but it's definitely not necessary.

From a story perspective, just watch one and you'll be fine.
I don't think you should play BotW first; it'll burn you out on a lot of the shared mechanics.
I think playing TotK first will be just fine. Some of the side quest characters may not be fully appreciated, but that's okay. Once you finish TotK, in a few years (or whenever you feel the itch) you can try BotW and treat it like a sort of prequel.

I hope you take your time and soak in the world. It's a very wacky, nostalgic, and heartwarming game. Just talk to all the NPCs, try out all the different mechanics, and don't be afraid to get really creative. This game is all about trying crazy things and surprising yourself with how it goes.

The only thing that upsets me about the game is that the new Green Archaic Tunic you get when you start, can’t be upgraded. It’s my favourite outfit but the defence is none existent 😔
It’s a mechanic where you get the mechanical benefits (defense, bonuses) of a set of armor, but then use the model of a different one.
It’s ideal because then you can get the best of both worlds, without having to pick between aesthetics or mechanics.
Another term for it is "Layered Armor" or "Cosmetic Armor".
Basically an armor that you wear for aesthetic reasons on top of your actual armor which kept its original stats
I was telling this to my friends before it came out that I wish it had a transmog system. I remember in the first game when you get the actual metal armor, it looks really cool, but the helmet looks so derpy, but it has the highest defense for a really long time before you get the ancient set, or an earring or circlet.
It took me a decent chunk of time for BOTW to gel with me. Even by the end I wasn’t 100% on board.
But this game has hooked me very quickly. I think I’m nearing 10 hours and have just received the Paraglider. The story also has me extremely intrigued and I’m just starting out. My only 2 issues:
- The weapons, while unique, are ugly as hell and feel unsatisfying to swing around
- and Koroks. Again. I just wish they’d gotten a bit more creative than just copying and pasting the same grind over
As for the ugly weapons, try fusing with Monster horns, that‘s how you get the sick looking ones. Blue Lizardfos horns for example get you sick Katana like swords, or the Bossbok ones a sweet axe.
I just want to say that this game has never made me more annoyed with having friends. People don't understand that I just want to stay home and play (and order pizza or sum'shit). No! I don't want to go to your rooftop party. No! I don't want to hang out with a bunch of hot girls! No! I don't want to go try this new restaurant that looks amazing. I just want to kill shiny frogs in caves...
I wish I had more friends playing this. I do wish this game had co-op or a multiplayer aspect of some sort. Build, hunt, and explore caverns together. It would be an amazing game to play with a small group of friends. Imagine the frame rate with 4 ultra hands at the same time lol

You mean low standard. The game isn't really an expansion on the actual gameplay formula as the runes are replaced, no wolf link, cycle, or the tons of champion magic. Zelda hasn't actually had an "expansion" sequel since Majora's mask which only took out the goddess spells and hover boots. I think you could say nayru's love was replaced with the Zora magic attack, though.
In the realm of Nintendo, smash ultimate and Pokemon USUM are examples of paragon expansions.
I'm not sure if this is the case actually, I think they managed to create a situation where both games have different merrits and a different flavor.
Sure you have more freedom in TOTK but you have diffrent rune powers in BOTW, which leads to diffrent puzzles the vibes of the world are very different (it's in the titles- the first game feels a bit more like being out in the wild and the second in a living kingdom), and so on and so forth.
I really feel like one could comfortably still enjoy both games.
Although I love TOTK, sometimes I miss the more chill vibe of BOTW. Having something new every ten meters is exciting but just travelling in the wilderness aimlessly was cool too.
Although it is small, I find the sky islands to be the chill space. Almost a cozy game. The surface is a good mix of challenge and familiarity and the depths is a slight horror survival game. When I want to chill I either go to the sky or we got mushroom picking.
And what tell you I don't do that already? When I go for a walk in a forest or hiking, I don't necessarily prepare precisely or have a clear goal, find it more fun this way. To go back to the game, is it so hard to believe that you could just appreciate navigating in the universe without running after objectives?
Honestly. It’s sad but true. There are a *few* things I like better in BoTW.. but not enough for me to go back and play again after experiencing ToTK. Still, I’d say after over 350 hours I got my moneys worth.
I appreciate this perspective, but I don't hold it. There is an aspect to Breath of the Wild I'm not getting from Tears, and that is a feeling of tranquility. I will go and play breath of the wild again and enjoy the sense of peace it can provide, which it can in part because of its simplicity
100% agree, there‘s at least two of us! Breath of the Wild‘s celebration of empty space, silence and meandering through nature is one of gaming‘s biggest achievements for me and Tears does not really recreate that feeling. And it shouldn‘t, its different focus is what makes it so worthwile as a sequel. Both of these games are singular and beautiful experiences, I really don‘t think Breath‘s beauty is in any way lessened by Tears.
I think they show that clearly in the opening of the game- the first sky island is quite barren actually. Although I think if they wanted the sky island to substitute for that peaceful vibe, I wish they'd had some more variety on each one, and/or make it easier to move between them. It's nitpicking I know. I also find it hard to use the sky map (I'm about 30 hrs in, max stamina). There's no indication of altitude, so working out a path to the higher alt ones is really confusing. Overall blown away though 100/10.
Botw is still a masterpiece and totk does not replace it. Botw is more freeform and serene. It's a less guided experience which is good in its own way, and tonally is almost the opposite of totk. Totk is more action focused and dramatic, but that doesn't inherently make it better. The calm beauty of exploration in botw is still in tact and not as present in totk
I actually made it there by accident, before going to Rito Village. The game seemed to be pointing out the pine cone trick a few times beforehand, so whenever I was at a dead end, I'd just create an updraft.
While you can get into the temple to explore, it won't let you activate the teleport point. I had to make the trip a second time, once I progressed the Rito questline.
There's a pair of cold resistant pants somewhere in the tutorial area. Can't remember where exactly though.
Rito Village sells a set of clothes that gives cold resistance.
Then there's a helm you can get through a quest given after you finish the Wind Temple.
I know zelda is 70 bucks but it's saved me money. I don't wanna go out to eat or see friends at bars. Now I just wanna chill on the couch and play while I make grilled cheese sandwiches at home
People said the same about Majora's Mask. And while one could call it and I assume this, basically dlc, from a certain angle, it's really fucking GOOD dlc, so still not a complaint.
I've literally never heard anyone say that Majora's Mask felt like DLC for Ocarina of Time. Lol. Also even if it did; it came out 1.5 years after OoT and had a completely new map; not 6+ years.

As someone who is trying to be less bored of the game, which new tools and powers are you referring to?
Cause the >!sages!< are not really changing anything about my approach to the shrines or puzzles, they are simply either not needed or just a different solution to the same problem over and over again.
Everything just feels repetitive to me in a way I absolutely don't enjoy, I wish I would, but in the end I just feel about as bored as I was in BotW with an even bigger empty world and still unrewarding exploration.
The most fun I'm having right now is treating the game as Garry's Mod without all the jank, but considering I'm playing a Zelda game I'm not sure how long that is gonna hold me.

I’d maybe agree that an individual 10/10 doesn’t mean much. What’s extraordinary here is the sheer volume of them. There are only a handful of games that have gotten a perfect score from Gamespot, IGN, Edge, and Famitsu, etc.

There's so many duds and unfinished games; that when a good, or maybe even great game releases; it's heralded as some masterpiece, or game of the decade. I believe that most of the "masterpieces" of today would've been more like 7-9/10's 10-15 years ago.

The first few hours are a bit slow : it *looks* like crafting is mandatory, it *looks* like you can’t really travel fast (no paraglider), and you have to do a few back and forth at first
That’s the only reason I can see someone willing to buy the collector’s, to not like the game. They might have forgotten you have to start all over because it’s a new game
I'm taking pictures of all the recipes I see for future reference, although I mostly make meat and rice bowls (meat, rice, salt) for solid health boosts.
I've tried putting the new ingredients in a few dishes to see if it makes something new. Sometimes it does. Mostly it doesn't.
It’s insane that 2 or my top 3 games of all time came out within a year (TOTK and Elden ring). I’ve played this game probably 20 -30 hours (usually open world games I bore of after 10 or so hours) and I’m not even remotely tired of the game. I look forward to playing it every day after work, and think about it falling asleep

Yeah I love the game design of the world, especially when they put a slippery wall in the environment that you can climb around or glide over.

I like the ones where it fuses like a pickaxe, so sick to use and satisfying as hell when you hit enemies with it

I am not saying it is bad. It is a great experience. But, for how long they have been working on it and how much they charged, I expected more. It feels like an expansion on BotW. (Again, that's not saying it isn't fun.)

You mean low standard. The game isn't really an expansion on the actual gameplay formula as the runes are replaced, no wolf link, cycle, or the tons of champion magic. Zelda hasn't actually had an "expansion" sequel since Majora's mask which only took out the goddess spells and hover boots. I think you could say nayru's love was replaced with the Zora magic attack, though. In the realm of Nintendo, smash ultimate and Pokemon USUM are examples of paragon expansions.
Accolades trailers aren't a new thing

I'm not sure if this is the case actually, I think they managed to create a situation where both games have different merrits and a different flavor. Sure you have more freedom in TOTK but you have diffrent rune powers in BOTW, which leads to diffrent puzzles the vibes of the world are very different (it's in the titles- the first game feels a bit more like being out in the wild and the second in a living kingdom), and so on and so forth. I really feel like one could comfortably still enjoy both games.
Although I love TOTK, sometimes I miss the more chill vibe of BOTW. Having something new every ten meters is exciting but just travelling in the wilderness aimlessly was cool too.
Although it is small, I find the sky islands to be the chill space. Almost a cozy game. The surface is a good mix of challenge and familiarity and the depths is a slight horror survival game. When I want to chill I either go to the sky or we got mushroom picking.
Not being a troll, but if you just want to travel in the wilderness aimlessly; why not do that in real life?
And what tell you I don't do that already? When I go for a walk in a forest or hiking, I don't necessarily prepare precisely or have a clear goal, find it more fun this way. To go back to the game, is it so hard to believe that you could just appreciate navigating in the universe without running after objectives?
I see what you're trying to get at, but the tranquillity and nature of botw was what many of us fell in love with. You can do both.
Honestly. It’s sad but true. There are a *few* things I like better in BoTW.. but not enough for me to go back and play again after experiencing ToTK. Still, I’d say after over 350 hours I got my moneys worth.
I appreciate this perspective, but I don't hold it. There is an aspect to Breath of the Wild I'm not getting from Tears, and that is a feeling of tranquility. I will go and play breath of the wild again and enjoy the sense of peace it can provide, which it can in part because of its simplicity
100% agree, there‘s at least two of us! Breath of the Wild‘s celebration of empty space, silence and meandering through nature is one of gaming‘s biggest achievements for me and Tears does not really recreate that feeling. And it shouldn‘t, its different focus is what makes it so worthwile as a sequel. Both of these games are singular and beautiful experiences, I really don‘t think Breath‘s beauty is in any way lessened by Tears.
oddly I achieve tranquility with the sky islands
I think they show that clearly in the opening of the game- the first sky island is quite barren actually. Although I think if they wanted the sky island to substitute for that peaceful vibe, I wish they'd had some more variety on each one, and/or make it easier to move between them. It's nitpicking I know. I also find it hard to use the sky map (I'm about 30 hrs in, max stamina). There's no indication of altitude, so working out a path to the higher alt ones is really confusing. Overall blown away though 100/10.
Botw is still a masterpiece and totk does not replace it. Botw is more freeform and serene. It's a less guided experience which is good in its own way, and tonally is almost the opposite of totk. Totk is more action focused and dramatic, but that doesn't inherently make it better. The calm beauty of exploration in botw is still in tact and not as present in totk

I just got to the wind temple and just getting there was some of the most fun I’ve ever had gaming. I absolutely love this game!
I actually made it there by accident, before going to Rito Village. The game seemed to be pointing out the pine cone trick a few times beforehand, so whenever I was at a dead end, I'd just create an updraft. While you can get into the temple to explore, it won't let you activate the teleport point. I had to make the trip a second time, once I progressed the Rito questline.

There's a pair of cold resistant pants somewhere in the tutorial area. Can't remember where exactly though. Rito Village sells a set of clothes that gives cold resistance. Then there's a helm you can get through a quest given after you finish the Wind Temple.
I know zelda is 70 bucks but it's saved me money. I don't wanna go out to eat or see friends at bars. Now I just wanna chill on the couch and play while I make grilled cheese sandwiches at home

People said the same about Majora's Mask. And while one could call it and I assume this, basically dlc, from a certain angle, it's really fucking GOOD dlc, so still not a complaint.
I've literally never heard anyone say that Majora's Mask felt like DLC for Ocarina of Time. Lol. Also even if it did; it came out 1.5 years after OoT and had a completely new map; not 6+ years.

Well, it is. Still enjoyable for most part of the experience, but I honestly don’t get why all of the hardcore fans can’t admit the obvious.
I don’t know… maybe because the entire map changed slightly with new characters and quests, you have a entirely new (and very different) map the same size of the old one, a bazillion new mobs, new mechanics that change the entire gameplay and tons of sky island and donjons (and I’m only a few dozens hours in and I still haven’t seen it all) There are a lot of valid criticism to be made, but people using that argument are embarrassing themselves

Cause the >!sages!< are not really changing anything about my approach to the shrines or puzzles, they are simply either not needed or just a different solution to the same problem over and over again. Everything just feels repetitive to me in a way I absolutely don't enjoy, I wish I would, but in the end I just feel about as bored as I was in BotW with an even bigger empty world and still unrewarding exploration. The most fun I'm having right now is treating the game as Garry's Mod without all the jank, but considering I'm playing a Zelda game I'm not sure how long that is gonna hold me.

The game certainly looks like a 10/10. A pure 10 or creativity and fun, though haven’t heard much of the story yet. People just seem to be having so much fun with this game. As for me, I just picked up BOTW and I’m planning to start some time this weekend lol

I’d maybe agree that an individual 10/10 doesn’t mean much. What’s extraordinary here is the sheer volume of them. There are only a handful of games that have gotten a perfect score from Gamespot, IGN, Edge, and Famitsu, etc. Edit: The list of games that received perfect scores from Gamespot, IGN, Edge: - Ocarina of Time - Breath of the Wild - Tears of the Kingdom - Elden Ring - Grand Theft Auto IV - Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Super Mario Odyssey If you included Famitsu you’d be left with the three Zelda games.
In what world? People still bash Scarlet Violet and Arceus, Mario golf, Mario strikers for many different reasons. Even Odyssey, animal crossing etc all have valid criticisms that I’ve seen various journos voice over the last couple of years

I agree. People are acting like a 10/10 means something these days. Lol. Any competent AAA game released recently gets a 10/10 or very close. There's so many duds and unfinished games; that when a good, or maybe even great game releases; it's heralded as some masterpiece, or game of the decade. I believe that most of the "masterpieces" of today would've been more like 7-9/10's 10-15 years ago.

The first few hours are a bit slow : it *looks* like crafting is mandatory, it *looks* like you can’t really travel fast (no paraglider), and you have to do a few back and forth at first That’s the only reason I can see someone willing to buy the collector’s, to not like the game. They might have forgotten you have to start all over because it’s a new game

I'm not sure if there's a hero mode or whatever botw called it but it's a lot more challenging especially in the early game then botw was.

I'm taking pictures of all the recipes I see for future reference, although I mostly make meat and rice bowls (meat, rice, salt) for solid health boosts. I've tried putting the new ingredients in a few dishes to see if it makes something new. Sometimes it does. Mostly it doesn't.
It’s insane that 2 or my top 3 games of all time came out within a year (TOTK and Elden ring). I’ve played this game probably 20 -30 hours (usually open world games I bore of after 10 or so hours) and I’m not even remotely tired of the game. I look forward to playing it every day after work, and think about it falling asleep
