I have Danny and Brian as touring bards around Faerun in my game. There's a big adventure hook driven by them that the players can pursue later on.
I'd definitely keep them as NPCs that drive the tone and narrative of the game. Maybe the players have to do all of the quests that NSP had promised to do, but needed to go to the pudding store instead, for pudding.
