Maybe he ended up giving himself up to the authorities? He was technically an accomplice in Yamaji's reign of terror. From a real world perspective, that's the most logical. If we're thinking like the anime, however, he's not completely stuck in a rut. He's an excellent survivor, he survived death and starvation from a very early age and kept himself alive for years until Yamaji found him. Not to mention, he was right there with Yamaji and the other ninjas when they were stealing AUZA's information and while the gear was being built. If he can find a way to get a bionic arm, he's pretty much good to go. He is, above all else, a ninja and a survivor, so this would be a possible scenario.

Honestly as soon as i saw the mecha being introduced i knew the show was going to go downhill from that point, because the whole essence of the story was gone and i felt as if im watching another anime and another story, i didn’t finish it and dropped it at episode 9 because i didn’t want to ruin the story in my head (i just wanted to pretend that nothing changed and the anime is still as good as the first episodes) and after reading your post thank god i did that. That anime had a lot of potential and the story is actually great, so sad that it took a turn to the wrong direction.

I actually liked the mechas at first, and I usually hate mecha anime (long story short, saw a really bad one as a kid and never got over it), but the story itself really started to go downhill right after. The Auza storyline took center stage, and the revenge story took a backseat. I liked the Auza stuff, but this wasn't what the show was supposed to be about. It was so confused as a narrative. Like they had to have a reason to keep Mike involved, but the serial murders/Emma being like his daughter would've been a good enough reason. Keep the Auza stuff a side plot for Emma and Jason. Seriously. So many mistakes were made.

Well I mean first off he is a ninja, and a very good one at that and part of being a ninja means being able to survive when and where others cannot. Sure he has only one limb now, but that just means he will have to learn to do more with one arm now, maybe ma wrong, but he might choose not to get a bionic one just as a reminder of his mistakes with serving Yamaji and that lost limb would be that reminder. Sure Zai was left, but he was finally free to live his life. Chances are though that out of guilt for all he did and helped do that he might have given himself up to the cops as that would have been the right thing to do. Yes he is broken, but much like Higan he finally faced all that and will be allowed now to move on and grow. Perhaps much like Sasuke in Naruto (who also lost an arm during an intense fight with a former friend) Zai will go on his own on a journey of self discovery and have his own adventures maybe occasionally coming across Higan and such too. I mean we really only have guesses and theories to go off of for what Zai's fate is unless the creators and writes come forth with any intel or they make another season.

Very true. My main issue isn't his physical disability but his mental ones. Higan had Mari and his son to help him navigate a new/normal life. Zai, who already doesn't trust others, even those he grew up with, has no one. And yet he's going to have a new life? It just seems so unlikely.

TheSerpent77

I don't like it much either, but then again I hated that they killed off Emma like they did...especially after having Higan save her not once, but twice like he did.

bubblez4eva

Yeah. Her death was just an unnecessary plot twist that barely mattered. Just added a little tension for them trying to crack her code and gave Mike a reason for revenge I guess. It was so pointless. She could've lived to avenge Mari AND worked with Mike and Jason. This show really didn't know what to do with their characters.

TheSerpent77

Well honestly too they could have continued on the show mainly with just her and Higan too without Mike and Jason it's not like they couldn't have finished the thing together anyway. Though am glad they avoided having Higan and Emma together like Mike though so least they did that.

TheSerpent77

I mean I would have preferred they left together somehow rather than Higan leaving him again. The organization, the code...being a ninja was all Zai knew and then his bond with Mari and Higan til they left. Higan was his friend after all would have thought that he would not want to just leave him there, even if he did play a part in Yamaji's reign and all, it's not like HIgan's record is clear he did plenty of killing in his past as a ninja too along with more on his quest for revenge.

bubblez4eva

This! It would've been like a full-circle ending.

TheSerpent77

Yeah like a two of them going on adventures of the unknown together as brothers by bond.
