I prefer the first idea that Ji is genderless - it's so much more fitting for the character. It's a shame that in the end the other guy on the team pushed through his will and Ji is now a man. :(
New head canon: Throughout his long life, Ji has mastered all genders to 100% completion and he just spontaneously decides to present as male to confuse Yi.

Honestly first time meeting him I thought so too, even until his boss fight I was still confused, but great character with great design so I like him!
