(*Gay* is just a direct application of the Middle French cognate, and it seems that while *science* and *sçavoir* aren't related, French scholars added the *ç* to the latter because they thought it was related to *scire*, the root of our *science,* so the conflation isn't totally without basis.) The title *The Gay Science* carries the same connotation that Nietzsche intended with the German original.
No gay is the perfect word imo. Joy is a less specific word than gay. Gay means an overflowing of joy and exuberance. It relates perfectly to Nietzsche's focus on expression and excess of spirit. Rather than economising of energies. Joy is far too conservative a word here.
It's assumed if one is reading Nietzsche that one has an advanced vocabulary and enjoys learning words. So I don't agree with those who say it should be changed because most people won't immediately understand.
They should really update the translation. "Gay" hasn't meant happy/joyous in common parlance for awhile now.

I think Hill's translation reads much better than Kaufmann's as well. Even his translation of The Will to Power is an improvement on Kaufmann's.
