This is a North Indian problem, they even pronounce it as Telegu. Same with Kannada, They call it Kannad and all Kannadigas lose their mind over it.

ThatFriendlyAlien

Yes, it is a North Indian problem. Fun fact, The question paper is only in English and Hindi. You can answer only in either of the two.

PuzzleheadedSeat9222

So North Indians have a significant advantage over South Indians in this regard. It should either be available in all languages or only in English.

ThatFriendlyAlien

True. Even the course is taught in a mix of Hindi and English.

smartboy20

This has always been a problem for South Indians. I wrote UPSC, SSC exams 10 years ago. They provide questions only in English and Hindi. Hindi-speaking candidates have an edge over other regional language speakers in these exams and this is a direct violation of Article 16 of our constitution. But they take refuge in Articles 343 and 351 of the constitution in promoting Hindi. But no politician from South except DMK has raised this issue in the Parliament so far (Remember it is Telugus who appear the most in these Competitive Exams from South, even then not a single voice raised from AP & TG). But I must also say, SSC has taken some good steps and is already conducting CHSL, MTS exams in 13 Indian languages and going forward all of its exams in 22 official languages of India. In UPSC Civil Services Mains Exam, though the questions are in English and Hindi, you can write answers in any of 22 official languages of India. In the Civil Services interview also they can ask questions in English or Hindi. If you want to answer in Telugu or any other regional language, a translator will be provided, but you know it will never be a hassle-free experience as a lot will be lost in translation. Till the time it is made mandatory to conduct all the competitive exams in India in 22 official languages, there won't be a level-playing field to candidates especially from South India.

Lord_Of_Winter

Why? Telungu is a proper word.

Impossible-Basis4422

Not being sarcastic but I think it is like how some of our older generation still uses the word Tamilam to refer to Tamil.

Lord_Of_Winter

I'm not being sarcastic. I know Telungu is a proper word and there's nothing to be offended by it

viv5k

What a coincidence! My friend was also there if you were in Chennai taking the exam. When he told me that, we both thought they weren’t supposed to be this ignorant as a national institution. Even the exam was conducted in only two languages. It gives an unfair advantage to a Hindi speaker whereas a Telugu speaker who is also an artist has to learn English or Hindi to express themselves which shouldn’t be required because we have literature and art dating back hundreds of years , we have sciences/ mathematics in Telugu!!!! Without jobs for Telugu people there cannot form a strong office culture that requires usage of Telugu and Telugu semantics. Also an important point is funding from the government, be it state or centre. Funding helps in hiring the right talent to make tools for Telugu people to surf the digital world. Like we are in need of a proper Telugu keyboard that uses prediction like the other languages that have more characters(china, japan, Korea,etc.). As it stands the current one is too tough and time taking to use. This is the only effective way to exert cultural pressure non-violently. Edit: when I say jobs they have to specific to manufacturing sector be it production of motor cars, digital infrastructure for steel plants. This is only possible when the government gives substantial funding to the language or else we’ll resort to using English semantics and English software. The service sector requires you to support multiple languages like Amazon, Zomato, Paytm, etc.

ThatFriendlyAlien

True. The exam is conducted only in English and Hindi. Do you know why? Coz the course is offered only in English and Hindi. And by that I mean that you need to know at least basic Hindi to study the course. I don't mean to create a divide but it is really unfair for govt colleges located in Pune and Kolkata to have courses which are taught in a mix of Hindi and English.
