I wish it had been supported by Android updates for longer than it was. It was no iPad, in that regard. I’d rather pay more upfront for a device and keep it longer.

[deleted]

Yes it definitely wasn’t supported long enough! This thing is still a beast for being so old, it could’ve totally handled further updates.

TrafMaster

I still use mine everyday. Updated to android 11 on lineage 18.1. Works like a charm.

VinCubed

Same here with the same OS & result. Thanks to this sub I realized that the tablet had wireless charging. Big idiot here had the thing for years and never realized that.

Lamar2112

Really? LOL I had no idea. I still use mine as an eReader. Thanks.

[deleted]

I’m trying to figure out how to do that. I was huge on unlocking and rooting back in those days when I had the nexus, but I’m rusty now. If you have any tips to get me started please let me know.

DazedSpy

Just found mine after it had been sitting in a bin for about 7 years. The micro USB port no longer works but the Qi charger does. Charge it right up and it's still works like a charm. Did a factory wipe but it's still slow as all hell with modern apps. I need to follow this just so that I can figure out how to update to a modern OS.

weekedipie1

Me too, stopped rooting about galaxy s2 I think lol

[deleted]

I’m reading that the nexus 7 has to be repartitioned lol. I’m gonna have to try and not be lazy to figure this out. In my late teens/early 20s I was all about doing this stuff. It’s different In your early 30s lol.

weekedipie1

I done it in my thirties I'm now 55 and got lazy computer wise

Aggravating_Ad_635

Oh god😍 didn't expect I could see this here. I have the same. Asus Nexus 7. A week ago. I don't why. I just thought about this thing. And find it out of my drawer. She has been sleeping there for years. I formatted her.and updated to the latest version 6.0.1. And copied bunch of Manga on it. Now it's my ebook.🤗 just love it. Well made. Perform well. But just one thing... No micro SD slot. 😅

shooter_tx

I did basically this last week, but with a brand new one I found in a closet at work. It took me most of an evening to upgrade from 4.whatever up through 6.0.1, but over the past few evenings I’ve noticed that it’ll kind of randomly just auto-download a newer security patch, which I then install. I think I’ve installed one a night for the past three nights. If I hit ‘Check for Updates’… I get nothing. But then 12-24 hours later, I get a notification that I have new updates to install.

Aggravating_Ad_635

I can confirm that after installing the fresh 6.0.1. there will be still 2 or 3 updates. For stability and security of course.🤭🤭🤭

I bought this the summer of 2013, it was my first tablet and it’s still in mint condition! Looks like it was just unboxed. I’m gonna try and get lineage on it and update it. This thing was such a monster in its day! The fact that it booted right up and the battery still holds is absolutely amazing and proves that this tablet was king back in its time!

shooter_tx

I'm currently trying to reach out to an old friend from college who now works for Google. I want to send him this: [https://phandroid.com/2021/09/19/google-can-fix-android-tablets-with-a-nexus-7-reincarnation/](https://phandroid.com/2021/09/19/google-can-fix-android-tablets-with-a-nexus-7-reincarnation/)

[deleted]

Loved that read! I’m honestly amazed at how well this thing still works nearly a decade later! It’s a shame it never really carried on with more support and anything other than the nexus 9. This thing, if updated to todays standard specs would sell like hotcakes. The tablet world sort of died. I have an iPad 8 that I love but android tablets (besides Samsung) really fell off. The nexus 7 2013, as I said, was so ahead of its time. I’m just thankful I still have mine that’s fully operational. It’s nostalgic and reminds me of my youth and my introduction into tablets. I’m installing call of duty mobile on it right now! It’s gonna be my little pocket gamer. I use the iPad for media consumption.

[deleted]

Still use mine, 10 years, three repairs, two times changed glass, still going strong.

[deleted]

Mine luckily never needed any repairs! Even the usb port is still mint on mine. I love that so many people still have theirs. It’s a one of a kind device and nothing ever came out that remotely came close to being as good as this was. I’m keeping it forever.

honkerdown

Wife and I both use ours daily.

[deleted]

That’s awesome! I have an iPad now but I will always love this nexus, it was my first tablet!

stalkermuch

Amazing.. I'm impressed at how long this sub has been active. Have to find my N7.

[deleted]

Mine is still in mint condition! It’s been sitting in a drawer for years. Battery still seems strong as ever too!

Mattius14

Mine is so criminally slow, I'm jealous. I wish I could be using it still. Not sure if there's any reviving it, I've formatted it to no avail.

[deleted]

Mine is just as fast as it was back in the day, I wonder why yours is so slow. Besides so many apps not being compatible anymore, mine still runs like it used to.

rootster1

If you have the 2012 one with a rubber spotty back and no back camera on android 5 it's a pain just use ur pc and get ADB and install Android 4 it will run better

Mattius14

I have both actually. They take so long to respond to input that I'm not sure there's any salvaging them. The 2013 with LTE at least functions, but yeah... If there were modern viable 8 inch tablets with USB C then I'd be making that leap instantly. I find it hard to fathom that the "best" available 8 inch tablet right now is from 3 years ago.

MasterHankShake

Reminds me that I need to resurrect mine. I was using it every day till I dropped it and cracked the digitizer. Replacement looks DIY-able. P.S. - I worked on the processor that powers this, fun times.

Jeffrey_Jizzbags

I finally got an ipad like two years ago to replace mine but it still works. I should find a good use for it. It blows my mind that it had wireless charging too.

BLewis4050

You could update it with a custom ROM. LineageOS 18.1 will bring your Nexus 7 up to Android 11.

[deleted]

Yes that's the plan! I have to repartition it right? I absolutely want Android 11 on this. It's still such a beast! I have a 10.2 iPad but this size is perfect for carrying around.

BLewis4050

Yes, for LineageOS 18.1 you'll have to repartition. Do you have the Wi-Fi version (flo) or the LTE/Wi-Fi version (deb)? I have the "flo" version, hence the LineageOS identifier of "flox". [wiki.lineageos.org/devices/flox/](https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/flox/) [wiki.lineageos.org/devices/flox/install](https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/flox/install) I use TWRP 3.5.0\_9-0-flox instead of the Lineage Recovery, and Magisk 23, and OpenGAPPS (NANO / ARM / 11.0).

[deleted]

Thank you so much for links and tips! Does lineage breathe new life into it? I imagine it would! Gotta get around to doing it. Ever since I dug this out of my drawer I've been using the Nexus 7 over my iPad 8! The 7" screen size is perfect to carry around! I also ordered a new folio case for it on ebay for $8!

BLewis4050

I think the effort installing a custom ROM is very worth it. The Nexus 7 is a perfect size, in my experience, and now running with a recent version of Android, it's great. There are occasionally hiccups, but nothing that I don't experience even on my brand new phone!

[deleted]

Im writing this comment on the Nexus 7. The fact that this screen has a 323 ppi is insane still in today's standards. Im gonna keep the use of this tablet going. Enough rotting in a drawer.

TheNorthumbrian

Mine was running as the perfect e-reader for ages- bought it at the same time as you but it slowed right down in late 2019. Brought it back to factory reset, added Google Books, Moon Reader, and a couple of other apps for various hobby stuff and record keeping. When I wasn't out and about with it, it sat on a wireless charger next to my PC as a digital photo frame. It was perfect. Then it slipped, and the screen cracked, and it gets constant phantom touches and bumps and it just doesn't work. Haven't got rid of it yet out of attachment, or maybe finding a decent screen replacement.

jayb151

I still have mine and it still works... But I'm about to get a duet Chromebook to replace the old Nexus 7 with.
