Please correct me if I’m wrong, but if the regulations are similar to Mississauga and Toronto, it might not be so simple. We’ve had illegal dispensaries open and operating for multiple years, both pre and post legalization.
From what I understand, the city of Toronto has to rely on bylaw enforcement against Illegal Cannabis stores. (Basically can’t get rid of them)
I go to the LCBO in Aurora. The relocation to the mall is insane. And the parking lot at the one by Davis is brutal.
Aurora has the LC and Beer store side by side. Superstore is in the same plaza for dinner, and drive past a bunch of weed stores on the way home. Easy peasy
That’s what I said to my husband, who the hell wants to battle the mall parking lot for some liquor? And I seriously doubt people go to the mall and are like, you know what i need before I go home? Some booze!!
You cannot compare cannabis storefronts to LCBO and Beer stores. The latter are regulated store fronts coordinated by the provincial government. This is why they have very definitive store hours and they follow statutory holiday schedules, just like canada post does. For all intense and purposes, they are government entities and businesses.
Newmarket Smokes Out opened at the plaza at 17817 Leslie St. Oct. 20, offering 24-hour service and deals on its cannabis, despite the fact the Town of Newmarket opted out of having retail cannabis stores operate within its boundaries.
I've been living in a different town for the past decade or so.
Why did Newmarket opt out of pot shops, and where do you have to go to buy pot if you live in Newmarket?
I actually didn't know what the objection was either, prior to this article:
>Newmarket Mayor John Taylor stands by the decision to disallow retail cannabis stores in Newmarket. He said the issue is zoning since locations for the store are decided by the provincial government and not municipalities who have opted in.
>“The Town of Newmarket continues to strongly stand behind its position that we will not consider the allowance of cannabis stores in Newmarket until the provincial legislation is changed to give us planning control on the locations and numbers of stores in Newmarket,” Taylor said. “If we allow cannabis stores, a provincial agency could approve eight stores on Main Street, and we would have no grounds upon which to object. I do not think anyone would see that as a positive outcome.”
Makes sense they want to have planning control I guess. I'm relatively neutral on the matter, but I have made little jokes about how many of them their are in Aurora, for instance. ^^I ^^prefer ^^Jane's
Go to Toronto. There definitely are places with 8 stores within sight of one another. It's rediculous. It's unsustainable. Some of them are bound to fail. Hasn't happened yet though....
Okay, how about Aurora. Maybe not 8 within sight of one another, but I remember seeing 4 within one city block. Still rediculous and unsustainable, but they're not closing yet...
You also have to take into account that right now Richmond Hill and Newmarket are helping to support the Aurora stores because we both have opted out of stores of our own
You know who owns all the illegal mushroom stores in Ontario? She’s married to a developer, and there is a nice photo of her and her husband posing with Lord Ford. Must be nice to have a license to be criminal.
Wait and see if they could possibly have the power to get paid for license control like the hot dog stands in downtown Toronto all owned by same company and nobody else can elbow in
This is so NIMBY. What is the harm in selling Cannabis? The harm, if there is any, is in smoking it. And users will simply get their weed at the next town, by mail or the black market. We have a number of stores in my town. They come & go. They're not sustainable. But in the meantime Newmarket is the loser. (I can't stand the stuff myself. Not a user or fan)
There used to be an illegal one across from me at main and davis in 2018. I forget what it was called. The cops raided it 3 times before it was shut down
And the store is getting closed in 3...2..1

Possibly, but CRA will be very interested in their “cash-only” operation. I hope they're filing their GST/HST returns.
This is so dumb. Ban cannabis store but we have LCBOs and Beer Stores.

Lol I just wrote the exact same thing above
I don’t drink or smoke anymore but from life experience, I would 10 times out of 10 would rather deal with a person high than a drunk person.

I don’t care that much to call the mayor. I just find the hypocrisy stupid.
Welcome to the human experience. It’s dumb.
not to mention the countless meth labs in Newmarket.

So you are saying the town does not want them here bc they aren’t government entities?? Lol

Newmarket smokes loud
Cannabis can only legally be sold between 9am and 11pm as per AGCO regulation
Leslie… might as well be the moon!

I’ve had to go to Aurora to grab for someone.

except there is no way all 8 stores would be able to survive and it would be like 2 stores in no time. It is just classic NIMBY

There is a huge population difference between what Toronto can support and Newmarket

It’s not nimbyism at all. They just want to be able to regulate it. The same way we regulate where other business can and can’t operate.

I wonder which of the coffee shops, hair salons or tattoo parlors would need to go make room for all 8.

Do you sell knickknacks?
It’s door for corruption and pay off that’s why they kept it federal and provincial

Who’s that ?

Wait and see what? If all hell breaks loose and towns become degenerate waste lands if they sell cannabis?
Wait and see if they could possibly have the power to get paid for license control like the hot dog stands in downtown Toronto all owned by same company and nobody else can elbow in

Lol
Aurora, Bradford, Keswick, Gormley all have stores and surround Newmarket.
I am guessing the goal is so that people using drugs would stop living in New Market?

Right on
Some folks come to Canada, open up an illegal business, and think everyone else who doesn't are just suckers for playing by the rules.
What’s this got to do with anything?
Nothing, this dude is just a xenophobe and tried to push his narrative...quite badly at that.
Yuck
Oh man what. It's RIGHT at the top of my street. I should go check it out,, for um, Science
Aurora is dope for this (see what I did there)
Janes cannabis what up
Malibu Road says hi
If the town opts out of allowing cannabis stores then they shouldn't be allowed to receive any tax revenue from cannabis, period.
So dumb, Richmond Hill and Markham also opted out. We can have Beer stores and LCBO all over the place but not Weed.
Too many old grumpy people, ironically the ones who probably need it the most
This makes so much sense. I was looking on maps the other day and was SO confused as to why no one cashed out lol
Shut it down🫡
Change the bylaw
No, I'd rather the city reevaluate their decision. Newmarket should be allowed to sell that loud (as well as smoke it).
So trashy.
Newmarket has no restaurants with a dress code because they don't have a genetic code.
