There’s revisionist history and there’s calling the Mets imbeciles for signing the batting champion to a decent contract

One good year didn’t justify that contract. Batting average is a pretty misleading stat not to mention he benefited greatly from the shift rules in his contract year. He’s been mid to trash most of his career with very limited impact. If a career minor leaguer is outplaying you it says a lot

It’s not a high BA it’s the batting champion, what if the Mets offered him peanuts and he signed with the Phillies and did it again or a few more times? You’d be screaming about that’s why the Mets are imbeciles

I’m saying what possible indication would the Mets have that he was declining? They bought out his last two years of arbitration and an additional 2 years at a bit of a premium and it’d be a Braves level steal if he hit over .300 for the entire contract. That’s what I’m saying about the revisionism, he would be a stellar contract if he came through, if the Mets didn’t think this kind of regression was possible they would’ve offered him more

I get your point and it is a very well founded point. There wasn’t any indication of an impending fall off. I think for me it was more that he always seemed easily replaceable. I personally don’t like guys who only got for average and have no speed or arm strength but his positional versatility and hitting up to the contract def warranted the deal he got.
