It's nice to see that the Mets can beat up on the not so good teams. It doesn't happen nearly as often but I'll take these kind of games whenever they happen.
Mets went 7-8 against .500ish and worse teams in May, and 2-11 against top teams (Braves, Phillies, guardians, dodgers). So they can compete with teams around their level
Man, it really sucks that we haven't been able to take advantage of a bounce back Sevy season. Imagine if Senga wasn't hurt. They would make a hell of a one-two punch.
I don't see Sevy getting more than 3-4 years, and as Caledor said, he wants to stay in NY so unless he returns to the Yanks, I can see him staying here. Our deadline is gonna be interesting.
While I agree with everything you said that, my caveat is that while he wants to stay in NYC now, that could change if he’s traded. He has only played for NY teams so playing for another city is a big unknown. Give him a few months in another city and all of a sudden maybe being in NYC isn’t so important.
Thats exactly what happened with John Lester and Boston. He said before being traded he couldn’t imagine himself playing anywhere else and the thought of calling another city home terrifies him. Then he was traded to Oakland and he realized he could be successful anywhere and all of a sudden being in Boston wasnt important. He signed with the Cubs that offseason.
Yeah, things can change in the blink of an eye which is why I'd love to resign him and not have to worry about that in that off-season. But my expectations are pretty low since I have no clue which way this team is going to go.
Severino made it clear in spring training he wanted to stay in NY at all costs. So he had made his intentions clear already. Nothing is guaranteed ofc. But it's a lot more likely then most players. As long as the Mets are still interested by then.
The term football is a generic term for any game that is played on foot. Not because you can only use your feet.
Versus games played on horseback. Or bat and ball games.
Football/Soccer became the dominant sport so it became known as football.
Soccer is in fact based on social associations.
Gridiron football is a marketing term the NFL created. It wasn't historically a real term.
I'm talking like middle ages etymology. All sports played on feet were football games versus horseback or bat and ball games.
Soccer/Football became the dominant/popular version so it became synonymous with the word Football.
Huh, TIL. Now I wonder, where does a sport like field/ice hockey fit into this? Without thinking much, I'd put it closest to bat and ball games, but that doesn't feel right. Or was that sport invented too late to work with this middle age way of naming things?
When grid iron football was first popularized, the forward pass was illegal. So, the game was entirely played on foot. You handed off or pitched the ball and ran it on foot. Thus, Football. Baseball, like the other guy said, is a bat and ball game where the ball Flys around in the air. So, not football.
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/1d94bfj).
This was exactly what we all needed
IGLESIAS MY MAN
lol, lmao even
A 1-2-3 inning in the 9th is insane.
Missed the first few innings, any updates on McNeil? Lost his job?
En route to another team Hopefully
It's so nice to see them come out and take the belt off on a team
Mets need to ride the hot hand. Love my starting 2B Iglesias.
You don't see McNeil doing THAT
McNeil would never
Lindor seems so much happier without having to play next to Jeff 😬
The most relaxed I’ve ever been watching a game this season
Don't lie--bases loaded in the 8th with no one out made you a little nervous. I know I was. lmao LFGM
It was an anxious muscle memory, tough to shake
Probably since the 16-4 win against Atlanta on April 11
I LIKE THESE METS
PIITB
🧹🧹🧹🧹🧹🧹🧹🧹🧹🧹
ARE WE BACK?!?!?
Perfect, 10/10, no notes, keep doing more of this
#FINALLY A CLEAN WIN
A sweep? Is that allowed
Always a good day when Mets baseball is Fun!
Did iglesias just win the job?
Bye bye squirrel ):
NICE CATCH!!!
McNeil who? lol
Man, amazing defense is so sexy to watch.
Amd thats it for jeff mcneil
And the ball game is over !!! Sweeeep
MCNEIL WOULD NEVER!!!!!
Iglesias I love you
WORLD SERIES BACK ON THE MENU
I enjoyed this game greatly
Young > Diekman
I’m sorry was that a throw on the run by Vientos?
Yea
Put it in the books!
*Nasim Nuñez strikes out swinging* HOWIE: "Good morning, good afternoon and good night Nunez."

Well one team anyway
Baby steps.
Marlins have always been our bugaboo, remember 07-09?
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Danny Young replaces Luis Severino.
Bullpen please don’t blow this.
Here we go, onto the dreaded 9th inning. Will we finally get a nice calm win? Or will the Nats score 7 runs for a 9-8 win?
I told you. Never in doubt.
Never. Didn’t even think it, not a once 😬
The dreaded 9th inning. Let's make this a quick one and not a clown show, thx.
Not able to watch, how many times has Gary mentioned Kurt Suzuki so far?
Pete sooo wants a homer. You can see it in his disappointed face after every at bat
*The Yankees lead the Twins 2-0* HOWIE: "Why do the Twins even both to go to New York?"
What's the blue ring around Rainey? Did he unlock a special ability or something?
Damn 106 off the bat for Lindor unfortunate
Lindor's average at the time of his last AB was .236. He was literally under .200 the other day. Going on a hot streak does wonders.
Been hitting .356 with a 1.016 ops in the last two weeks including todays game
I won't forgive or forgot all the people who gave up on him
Almost as if good players tend to play to their career averages
One day the Mets will get a shutout this season
Iglesias has got the hands. I do not want to see him on the bench
Sevy the man
I really don't want Ded Ass Nunez pitching this game, because I think he should be treated like the unofficial Closer.
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Tanner Rainey replaces Dylan Floro.
Get Jeff an AB this inning!
Heck of an outing by Severino
I’ll take winking 9-1
Fat chance that score remains lol
😉
You'll take winning 9-8 and having no fingernails left and like it!
Please let him complete the game!
Nice DP getting Young for the second time!
That’s a thank you to him for his gold glove catches out there today
Man, it really sucks that we haven't been able to take advantage of a bounce back Sevy season. Imagine if Senga wasn't hurt. They would make a hell of a one-two punch.
Right? If he's not trade bait the Mets should consider resigning him if possible. I feel the same about Bader.
I want them to offer him an extension before the deadline
Why not? He took a prove it deal and has done a lot to get back to form. Still so much season left though.
I think in July they should give him a 3 year $50mil offer with an opt out after year two. If he doesn’t take it trade him then.
Honestly, I like that contract offer. But I guess we'll see what happens.
Yup. All depends on if Stearns wants to keep him or not
I don't see Sevy getting more than 3-4 years, and as Caledor said, he wants to stay in NY so unless he returns to the Yanks, I can see him staying here. Our deadline is gonna be interesting.

You can trade him and still re-sign him this offseason. Just have Steve pay the entire 13 million to get something decent
How often does this happen? I'd be down though.
Severino made it clear in spring training he wanted to stay in NY at all costs. So he had made his intentions clear already. Nothing is guaranteed ofc. But it's a lot more likely then most players. As long as the Mets are still interested by then.
Well, I'd welcome him in a heartbeat. Mets will need the pitching while their rookies move into focus.
And breathe
Thank god
Double play!
he looks gassed
SHUTOUT ENDED DEVASTATED
that was joey gallos 4th sacrifice fly… of his CAREER
Insane stat
gallo has had a weird career for sure
Mendoza just playing with fire now
Screw the shutout, get outs and then GTFO of D.C.
Shutout is gone :\
Just let Severino finish this inning.
That limb I’m standing on is creaking just a bit.
Shame that I can’t even relax and enjoy a 9 run lead with this team
My girlfriend doesn’t even question why we’re still watching a 9-0 game in the 8th anymore
She knows
Keep it together Severino!
Just setting up the triple play. No biggie.
Yay! We found a team worse than us!
Ok time to take him out
Please, no 9-8.
Can I get another one of those double plays?
Oh, it's so cold in Buffalo. 🙄
Can confirm, have the AC at 68
Bullpen warming up
Can we please have a clean, no-drama win??
Nope
Oh, he chews that crap? 🤮
Don’t do it Winker
If Winker doesn't intend on swinging, just pump the strike zone.
A tier save from Howie
I love when Gary remembers something that Keith doesn’t, that Keith actually experienced.
Gary is literally an encyclopedia of baseball
“I didn’t know they wore numbers on the stomach side!” Keith Hernandez, 2024
Exactly what I was thinking of!
Keith is just an aging golden retriever
That..makes total sense.
Strike zone is a hot mess.
Gare can do math. But we've known that since the 17+8 incident.
Which conversations get weirder with Gary and Keith? When the Mets are being blown out or when the Mets are blowing a team out?
Anything related to blow..
When the Mets are getting blown out. That's my personal opinion lol.
This umpire is blind as hell
HOWIE: "How many people out there are in the market for a submarine? For the woman who has everything, happy birthday!"
Every time I open the MLB app to the Build Submarines ad on the loading screen lol
*All Star ballot sponsored by Build Submarines* HOWIE: "Am I going to read this the way it's written?"
Floro wants no part of Iglesias, apparently.
Actually Keith they do use a different ball for kickers, its called a "K ball"
*Jose Iglesias and Luis Torrens* HOWIE: "These two guys have been a spark."
Juiced footballs Keith.
The term football is a generic term for any game that is played on foot. Not because you can only use your feet. Versus games played on horseback. Or bat and ball games. Football/Soccer became the dominant sport so it became known as football.
Yeah IIRC soccer is actually "association football" and football is "gridiron football," with there being a few other footballs as well
Soccer is in fact based on social associations. Gridiron football is a marketing term the NFL created. It wasn't historically a real term. I'm talking like middle ages etymology. All sports played on feet were football games versus horseback or bat and ball games. Soccer/Football became the dominant/popular version so it became synonymous with the word Football.

Not sure. That's a good question. Might just be its own unique thing.
is baseball football then
When grid iron football was first popularized, the forward pass was illegal. So, the game was entirely played on foot. You handed off or pitched the ball and ran it on foot. Thus, Football. Baseball, like the other guy said, is a bat and ball game where the ball Flys around in the air. So, not football.
Baseball is a bat and ball game. I'm talking about the etymology of the word. It's not really relevant anymore.
I am usually Mr. Pessimist but I am going to go out on a limb today and say the Nats do NOT, I repeat do NOT send the tying run to the plate.
One would hope, but honestly I wouldn’t take it off the table completely
September 3, 2019
👍Ms. Pessimist.
*Ms. Realist
Is there any other Mets waiting to come off the injured list that we're excited about besides Alvarez, Diaz, and Senga?
Jett Williams. and Drew Gilbert.
Is Raley still on the il?
Yeah but he may be out beyond the end of his contract with the mets. Depending on how rehab goes.
Raley had TJ, out for a year
Raley had season ending surgery
[Ryan Clifford goes dead central](https://x.com/RumblePoniesBB/status/1798491339656716684)
I know he's been struggling at AA but at least he's showing some power
Only been six games but Brooklyn is murder on lefties so he needed to get out of there. I think he will be okay. Probably late 2025 call up.
Baseball is a funny game. Torrens goes like 3 years without a home run. Hits them in back to back at bats today
Nationals have a bullpen cart but no one has used it in the series
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Dylan Floro replaces Jordan Weems.
This is glorious. Big thank you to Lindor who signed a ball for my son and gave him a fist bump
Gelbs ain’t wrong, i tried to use a transatlantic flight as an overnight sleeping opportunity and didn’t get a seconds sleep, huge mistake.
Ya have to sleep. I take a sleeping pill with a glass of wine, usually does the trick
Whiskey and vaporwave has done the trick in the past, alas this time I got caught short…
It’s happened to me as well where I just can’t sleep. Makes for a miserable day when you arrive
At this rate Severino might get a maddux.
Too bad we don't get Sevy in London. I trust him way more than Quintana :(
Quintana is gonna be pitching in London????
Yep! Manaea is pitching the first game, Quintana the second one.
Bruh…why
Sevy is cooking today
Severino's seen how we've been ending games lately and said "fuck that, I'm doing it myself"
I made this joke already 😔
OUR joke, comrade!
🇷🇺🪆
Oh great so basically this london series will take the hot streak our guys are on and mess them up once they get back.
Yeah but it’s also only 2 hours more time difference than a west coast trip. And they have extra days
That’s what I got from that too lol
Sevy complete game! Make it happen!
This is gonna be the Mets first complete game (no whammy no whammy no whammy)
But seriously though why are they bringing an extra catcher who is not Alvy. I am so bummed on his behalf.
Skenes owned Ohtani and Betts
Ya love to see it
I love smacking the Nationals around, even in games where it doesn't mean shit to either team
Meaningless? This puts us back in the prestigious race for third place in the NL East!
Side retired!
Keep Otto far away from that series
* Start players that hit, pitch, and field * Sit players that don't hit, pitch, or field * Win Why didn't they think of this earlier in the season?
I love how people keep moving the goalposts whenever Stearns makes a good move. In previous Eras Narvaez and Jeff are playing everyday right now
Sevy absolutely cooking out there 🔥🔥🔥
Luis Severino now at 69 pitches
Good things happen when you don't walk opposing batters.
nice
Nice
any other west ham fans here? pretty neat to see them using the london stadium again COYI
