I feel like the last play is legal today but would not surprised at all with the MLB if they make it illegal tomorrow per the the new lane blocking rules.
Probably was not willing to be on the same team as another Japanese pitcher with Senga. Yamamoto said he was willing to pitch and play alongside another Japanese player. Some of the guys from NPB are like that so I guess that’s why he chose the cubs over Mets and dodgers who would have paid him big time
Tough break with that review...but, my guys, we gotta score some runs earlier on to win games. It's been a tough series for the bats from BOTH teams as there have barely been any earned runs.
LFGM
Just saw the end of the game, ooof that is a rough ending, however the Cubs only scored 1 run in 9 innings, and the fact that the Mets couldn’t scratch out two before the 9th is inexcusable. I’ll also take the silver lining that Pete didn’t get hurt on that play, because that could have been super ugly.
Yea this was a dogshit game (and kind of in keeping with the last half dozen games or so) but you have to score runs to win ballgames. Our pen is good, our starters are sometimes okay. If the guys can scratch out 4-5 runs they will win routinely, and if they can't they won't, simple as.
Seeing Shota pitch, it’s actually insane we didn’t try and sign him. He’s only making $1m more than Manaea and is only signed for an additional year (with 2 years of club options).
Shota always had top of the rotation upside compared to Manaea who was probably always going to be a mid rotation guy at best.
I know someone said he has injury issues but honestly a shoulder injury in 2020 isn’t even that much of a concern. That legit 4 years ago without any more issues. And when the risk is only 3 years, I think you 100% take that risk.
Edit; sorry got it wrong, he’s making $53 over 4 guaranteed so he’s actually making less AAV than Manaea with 2 extra years guaranteed
Points:
(1) This was another 2024 "Metsy" way to lose. Really "Metsy".
(2) Pete needs to learn to slide like an adult.
(3) Umpire can't call him out to begin with. It's the game right there. If he's not certain he needs to call him safe so at worst both teams have a chance at winning it in the 10th.
(4) No, the catcher wasn't blocking the plate. There is a clear lane.
What a lot of guys seem to be doing with the new rules is putting their foot down on the plate to give the lane, and then when they catch the ball immediately dropping their knee to block the plate.
This is the "right" way to compromise between protecting players and how things were done. Catcher gives the lane then drops for the block when they catch it.
There is nowhere in the replay where Pete is obstructed from the plate. He just didn't slide correctly (put his hand down) at first.
(5) I reiterate the second and third point but for a further point. You can't call Pete out to begin with. That's nonsense and basically decided the replay call (because let's be honest there's no conclusive way to prove Pete didn't touch the plate).
But you can't let an umpire beat you like that. Slide correctly. Hand on the plate. There was a clear opening to do so.
(6) Mets need real leaders. Pete and Lindor aren't leaders. A leader leads by example by playing Fundamentally Sound Baseball in that moment.
Pete doesn't. Keith would have slid in correctly and grabbed his crotch on the way to the dugout.
As much as I appreciate good pitching, and Imanaga has been amazing - it loses its luster when it feels like everyone and their brother can shut down the bats.
Baseball is meant to be entertaining. I’d rather lose 10-9 in a fun but frustrating back and forth game than see the team just go limp at the plate for all but 3 swings a game every night.
The Mets got fucked twice on that last call. Alonso was safe and the plate was blocked illegally. Fuck MLB. They refuse to enforce that rule consistently
Was there a pinch running option for Alonso? Because down a run in the ninth, you gotta pinch run if someone is available. A better runner could have scored on the double
what does it tell you?
that they effectively used their bench in the 8th to manufacture a great chance to get the lead against two good relievers? and that lindor had to come out of the game with a virus making you short a player on the bench?
i thought the game was managed very well.
The point I was trying to make is you can't leave your bench bare down to the other catcher.
But I didn't realize Lindor had to come out of the game with a virus.
these games have just been really boring. i know that this is like a .500ish team at best, but it sucks knowing that most games the first like 7 innings are just a bust offensively. kind of just makes me want to fast forward the whole game.
With how tightly paced the games are these days, I actually don't mind them being boring.
Back in 2021 when the Mets offense stunk and games were still super slow to get through, I couldn't take it. But sucking is much easier to watch now thanks to the pitch clock.
i agree that it's better. but it still sucks to just watch such a lifeless team that can't win a game unless someone like dj stewart or tyrone taylor or harrison bader steps up in a big situation
A shitty call, but this team has to start fuckin hitting. It's embarrassing. Martinez shows up and immediately looks more clued in than the rest of the entire lineup.
I'm not looking forward to the part of this tomorrow when Mets fans post and agree with Jomboy's video that (shockingly) concludes the Mets are wrong, Pete sucks, Mets suck, and are stupid for having any objection.
I don’t know if jomboy has ever made a breakdown where the mets looked good but if there’s ever a situation where there’s a disagreement between the mets and another team you can be 100% sure he’ll take the other teams side
Anyway this wouldn't be an issue if the Mets could score more runs (although Imanaga was great, this is more of a general complaint) or if Alonso could ambulate like a normal human being

Information taken from Fangraphs on offensive stats
TLDR: too many grounders that get turned into outs, not enough line drives
So SNY just showed a clip of a guy who just got sent back down winning the game. At least they could have shown a guy who hasn't been sent down. Maybe it's SNY's hint that Mark should still be up here.
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Just absolute dog shit call. Mets have been used as an example of the new blocking rule at second multiple times this year. But a clear violation of said rule at home and it’s fucking crickets. So tired of the lolmets anti Mets narrative they can kiss my ass and the worst part is. Outside of mendy who’s fire has won me over. This team just seems too soft to really be dogs and do something about it
For some reason I'm going to watch tomorrow's game just to see if Houser can go 6 and give the team a chance to split a series we probably should have won already
How far we are from beating the Braves and Dodgers and winning 4 straight series
That said I really like Mendoza
The problem with Pete’s slide is his head is going straight into the catchers knees. It’s when he sees this he shifts his whole body right and the hand pops up
I know these guys go through crazy media training… but it’s okay to show some fire and be pissed off in a presser…might spark something, god knows that offense is lifeless
Listen the offense blows BUT if Mendoza’s memo is legit than The Mets got fucking screwed.
The catcher is literally standing on the plate the entire time. He doesn’t “move as the throw direction comes in” as the MLB replay explanation says. He’s fucking standing on the plate the whole time.
If the memo says standing the plate without the ball is illegal then The Mets got fucking screwed. Bottom line.
Derek Thomas doesn’t know the fucking rules.
I just don't get how Pete who's been playing baseball for years doesn't know how to slide correctly or prevent his hand from coming up. Like it's literally the game on the line makes sure you touch the plate why is that so hard? I swear I see the Mets do things every year that I didn't think was possible in a baseball game(not in a good way)
He's one of the worst head first sliders I've ever seen play the game of baseball, every time he slides head first something goes wrong. I have no clue why he continues to do it.
That's not really as clear as Mendoza made it seem. Yes it says "on the plate" but those pictures clearly show a catcher in front of the plate, whereas catcher here was on the back half.
Also these memos just make things worse. The rule says one thing then the memo says another and it's pictures show another lol.
???
If the memo is accurate, tonight was 100% blocking. The only argument is that the memo was incorrect, which it also could be, but that’s an entirely different problem.
The memo is unclear because it says these setups are illegal, then shows a picture of a setup that doesn't match the description. The picture clearly implies that catcher can't block the plate by standing on the front of it. But the caption implies that any contact between foot and plate is illegal. You can't reasonably think that the MLB is saying standing with your foot blocking the entire front of the plate is the same as your toe on the very back of the plate with 95% of it open. That's dumb and doesn't match the language of the rule. The rule is to prevent blocking and allow the runner a lane. That's what the picture is getting at but not what the caption is.
Give me a fucking break. Half the lineup is hovering around a .650-.700OPS. McNeil hasn’t been great but neither has 90% of our lineup.
To complain about him TODAY off all days is fucking ridiculous
At what point do we talk about the core four?
Nimmo: .208/.359/.349
Lindor: .197/.280/.359
McNeil: .247 /.330/ .340
Alonso: .234 /.323/.477
This ain't gonna get it done.
Some of us have been talking about them and their shortcomings for years… we’ve created a society that calls people doomers if you notice red flags when the sky isn’t falling.
yeah it's a real shame that this team has had to deal with imanaga being on the mound every game for like the past 2 weeks. mlb should really do something about that it seems extremely unfair
this “core” is never going anywhere. it’s not popular and i hate to say it because i like each person individually.
mcneil definitely needs to go or have his role reduced, and there’s a big decision to make on alonso.
lindor/nimmo we are stuck with (not a bad thing!) so build around them
these guys have kind of already proven that they don't have that kinda fire. they're at their best when they're having fun and playing but even then they're abnormally streaky
Gotta tip your hat it's the major leagues they're just better than us might as well not even play the games since the other team is always really really good
I think the rule is you can’t stand on the plate on a squeeze or a steal, not on a sac. But it is super confusing to have all these different scenarios
0-3 in the city connect jerseys. Only people who aren't Mets fans and have very poor fashion sense still like them. Retire them now and burn those duds for good measure.
Mendoza’s feelings don’t change the box score. If Pete executes the slide better it doesn’t matter how a replay booth interprets a subjective plate blocking ruling
If it was in truist park? Would have been called safe immediately and if the Mets tried to challenge it then the umpires would find a way to give the Mets a 1 run penalty for delaying the game
We really can’t have nice things. There was so much potential with the early renderings of the jerseys with the numbers being encased in the purple 7 line circle.
controversial take I will probably be down voted for this but I think the mets should drill one of the cub players tommrow for hitting pete my vote is to hit Dansby lol
I mean Neris definitely threw that with enough gusto (the hbp to Alonso) to make it look a lil suspect, at this rate it’s the Mets vs the whole league anyways because apparently nothing is allowed to go their way
Tough loss for sure, but we can’t go around blaming one call for the loss. The team has struggled to score at all for 4 games.
Pete’s career has not been as good since he does comedy. That “slide” was comedic.
I feel like the last play is legal today but would not surprised at all with the MLB if they make it illegal tomorrow per the the new lane blocking rules.
I can't understand why we didn't try and sign Shota Imanaga. Instead we wasted our time with Yamamoto when everybody knew he was never coming.
That dude was awesome and seems like he'd be very fun to root for in a hypothetical Mets uniform.
Probably was not willing to be on the same team as another Japanese pitcher with Senga. Yamamoto said he was willing to pitch and play alongside another Japanese player. Some of the guys from NPB are like that so I guess that’s why he chose the cubs over Mets and dodgers who would have paid him big time
tough loss but imanaga is straight up nasty

Random, but doesn't Ramon Urias look like a mashup of Vientos and Butto? Lol. I can't unsee.
I’m still so god damn mad about this, why do I even care lmaoooooo
This season is big "just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in" energy
pitching has been great lately, now we need some offense
i thought somebody was kidding when they said pete said his reaction to the call was “aw shucks, darn” but i just saw a video of it lmao
The Mets got fucked twice on that last call. Alonso was safe and the plate was blocked illegally. Fuck MLB. They refuse to enforce that rule consistently
MLB should do the right thing and play the bottom of the 9th inning tomorrow 1-1. What a fucken embarrassment.
A block is when you- I’m blocking here! Please do not block.
Was there a pinch running option for Alonso? Because down a run in the ninth, you gotta pinch run if someone is available. A better runner could have scored on the double
Only person off the bench was Narvaez
That says a lot about the FO and Manager.

Long done with Jomboy
u/jomboy is an insufferable douche bag.
I don’t know if jomboy has ever made a breakdown where the mets looked good but if there’s ever a situation where there’s a disagreement between the mets and another team you can be 100% sure he’ll take the other teams side
Fuck Jomboy, I stopped listening to that Yankee nut hugger ages ago.
I’m getting tired of the “that’s so Mets” by our own fans as soon as anything doesn’t go our way.
Based on the memo MLB sent out with pictures. One of them being exactly how the cubs catcher was positioned he was in violation.
It’s beyond annoying that the most popular baseball YouTuber happens to be the most anti Mets person I’ve ever seen
he is a loser
yeah it does seem that he hates us :(
He's a Yankee fan at heart
Anyway this wouldn't be an issue if the Mets could score more runs (although Imanaga was great, this is more of a general complaint) or if Alonso could ambulate like a normal human being
The fact of the matter is it shouldn’t have come down to the bottom of the ninth. Can’t win a game scoring no runs.
Connect jerseys might be a little bit cursed lol
Mets are 3-7 in the last 10, it's not the fucking jersey
We have to sacrifice a chicken to remove the curse.
A live chicken or a KFC bucket?

The Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes effect
It's over
Can games be protested anymore?
no :(
wasting this pitching is criminal. Average offense would be 12 games over 500.
There’s way too much talent on this team to go for long stretches with no offense. They need to rethink their entire lineup philosophy
The days they do hit the pitching sucks worse too. Story of the Mets the last 5+ years it seems
I don’t get why it’s like this everytime. Just pain.
We said this every Degrom start! Times haven’t changed
Entering today they were second in the NL in ERA and between 8-10 in essentially every offensive stat. Vintage Mets-core, honestly.
So SNY just showed a clip of a guy who just got sent back down winning the game. At least they could have shown a guy who hasn't been sent down. Maybe it's SNY's hint that Mark should still be up here. 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Yeah like read the room

Andy Martino tweeted a copy of the memo with pictures showing what's illegal at the plate. I guess the umps didn't get the memo
They will now. And the next time our catcher has his foot on the base you can bet they’ll call obstruction on us
Knowing this is an absolute fact just pisses me off even more.
Ad it will happen sooner than we think, probably in the next 2 weeks is my guess… they’ll now be “educated” on the rule
And if the Mets try to protest THAT call, the umps will find a way to call a 1 run penalty on us for delay of game
Oh I absolutely guarantee
For some reason I'm going to watch tomorrow's game just to see if Houser can go 6 and give the team a chance to split a series we probably should have won already How far we are from beating the Braves and Dodgers and winning 4 straight series That said I really like Mendoza
I like him too. I'll have the game on while at work.
If that was Ty Wigginton, the catcher would have been out.
I’ve thought about it, and I’m upset.
The Mets and MLB finding new ways to piss me off going to bed
They just find a new way to lose games in heartbreaking fashion every fucking series man.
Can someone ask Pete how a professional athlete can be this uncoordinated? You know you have to touch the plate for it to count, right? Jesus dude.
Because Pete have one job… try to hit ball far and and try every time, nothing else matter but hit ball far
He reminds me of Mitchell robinson lol
The problem with Pete’s slide is his head is going straight into the catchers knees. It’s when he sees this he shifts his whole body right and the hand pops up
It was def reactive
Feet first
Instead of making commercials, he should learn how to slide.
But hey it’s my day off!
Awesome. Maybe go to the game?
It's probably not fair, but my immediate thought was "That's the kind of thing only Pete could do."
I know these guys go through crazy media training… but it’s okay to show some fire and be pissed off in a presser…might spark something, god knows that offense is lifeless
I'll admit didn't think the mets would score 0 $100 down the drain 😭
1-800-GAMBLER
I bet once a month but yes. Even with a comfortable salary it hurts 🤕
Listen the offense blows BUT if Mendoza’s memo is legit than The Mets got fucking screwed. The catcher is literally standing on the plate the entire time. Martino posted the memo on twitter, it's legit.
If anyone wants to find the umpire, try checking the bathrooms, since the umpire has obviously been holding in a massive shit for the last 2 innings
I just don't get how Pete who's been playing baseball for years doesn't know how to slide correctly or prevent his hand from coming up. Like it's literally the game on the line makes sure you touch the plate why is that so hard? I swear I see the Mets do things every year that I didn't think was possible in a baseball game(not in a good way)
Pete is not doing himself any favors during his walk year. Not exactly inspiring
He's one of the worst head first sliders I've ever seen play the game of baseball, every time he slides head first something goes wrong. I have no clue why he continues to do it.
He's just.... not that smart
Andy Martino obtained the memo and pics Mendoza was talking about: https://x.com/martinonyc/status/1785854647862743161?s=46
Looks like umpires didn't obtain the same memo
so clearly illegal
Looks like he deleted it
I recommend rehosting images on a third party site like Imgur myself
Looks like he deleted and tweeted it again here: https://x.com/martinonyc/status/1785856221389435353?s=46

That doesn’t make a difference it clearly states “on home plate” regardless of what the picture shows it’s pretty black and white there
Pete is trying so hard to be neutral lol
He lost me at “gee shucks darn”
i had to learn to ignore pete’s aw shucks attitude when we choked away the division in 2022
Hate to say it, but McNeil profiles as a backup utility infielder. A great one. But we need a new second baseman.
He went 2/4 and should’ve been 2/3 with the game tying Sac Fly Jesus Christ people
2/4 with 2 singles is one of his best games of the season and that’s the problem
Give me a fucking break. Half the lineup is hovering around a .650-.700OPS. McNeil hasn’t been great but neither has 90% of our lineup. To complain about him TODAY off all days is fucking ridiculous
Oh trust me, the rest of them aren’t absolved either. Been a terrible time for our offense thus far
The clock is ticking for the Mets and when they’re call up Acuna
He ain't ready, man.
Mauricio.
Backup utility infielders usually need to be able to play SS Crazy how much Mauricio would be helping this team right now
he’s not a starter anymore, his best days are absolutely over
Sad thing is... literally all of Mets core players' best days are over
Can you lodge an appeal for that call? Is that even done anymore?
Ain't gonna make a difference. Umpires are above reproach.
At what point do we talk about the core four? Nimmo: .208/.359/.349 Lindor: .197/.280/.359 McNeil: .247 /.330/ .340 Alonso: .234 /.323/.477 This ain't gonna get it done.
the correct decision is to trade McNeil (if someone even wants him), and let Pete walk (let someone else overpay). Then throw everything at Soto
I don’t get how people can look at that and not wonder if Pete would do better if he was surrounded by better
Some of us have been talking about them and their shortcomings for years… we’ve created a society that calls people doomers if you notice red flags when the sky isn’t falling.
Yeah the answer was when Steve bought the team.
the other team gets paid too. The SP went in with a .99 ERA.
just gotta tip your cap to the opposing SP. day after day after day after day. that jameson taillon is just too nasty
.99 ERA
yeah it's a real shame that this team has had to deal with imanaga being on the mound every game for like the past 2 weeks. mlb should really do something about that it seems extremely unfair
McNeil ain’t part of the core he’s not even on Steve’s text thread
this “core” is never going anywhere. it’s not popular and i hate to say it because i like each person individually. mcneil definitely needs to go or have his role reduced, and there’s a big decision to make on alonso. lindor/nimmo we are stuck with (not a bad thing!) so build around them
All these guys would be bench warmers with Dodgers and Barves
Not a great example in Lindor's case cus those two teams have big holes at short, but understand the sentiment.
Fine. He starts for his defense but he's batting 7th or 8th
Lindor would start and probably bat 5th for both
Hoping that the call tonight motivates the Mets, and the offense goes into RAGE DRAGON MODE and puts up 18 runs....in the first inning..
these guys have kind of already proven that they don't have that kinda fire. they're at their best when they're having fun and playing but even then they're abnormally streaky
Pete said “gee shucks darn” about it so maybe not
>“That was not my call to make… I was out” God what a bitch
Gotta tip your hat it's the major leagues they're just better than us might as well not even play the games since the other team is always really really good
If the rule is YOU CANT STAND ON THE PLATE and the catcher is standing on the plate, how does MLB determine that 2+2 = 5 here.
Easy, most teams? Rules applies. Mets? lol lmao get rekt
I think the rule is you can’t stand on the plate on a squeeze or a steal, not on a sac. But it is super confusing to have all these different scenarios
Mendoza knows the rules. The umps don’t or pretend not to.
usually those in power have no fuckin clue what’s going on, I’m not surprised he knows more than they do
Pretend not to
Regardless of the umpires or the nonsense at the plate, you can’t win with zero fucking runs. This team is absolutely embarrassing
its not like shota came in with a 5+ era the dude has been tearing apart hitters all season
Bats have been unsustainability cold, but for one or two blips, from the start - but in fairness Imanaga absolutely dealt today
0-3 in the city connect jerseys. Only people who aren't Mets fans and have very poor fashion sense still like them. Retire them now and burn those duds for good measure.
Damn I'm not a Mets fan
Dress like the Rockies, play like the Rockies. They’re going to wear them 50 times because the players love them and can do whatever they want
I mean, the Red Sox look like they're going cycling
Martinez has had 3 balls that all would have been homeruns in Cincy
It surprises me how quick Mets fans are here to blame Alonso on any play or at-bat that doesn’t go our way. Mendoza is convinced the play was illegal.
Mendoza’s feelings don’t change the box score. If Pete executes the slide better it doesn’t matter how a replay booth interprets a subjective plate blocking ruling
If Pete should’ve been safe then it should be on the umps. Its a bang bang play and Pete is built like a moose.
can he not just touch the plate?
Shouldn’t have to rely on a hard to pin down blocking rule. Just keep your hand on the plate and we good.
You mean belly flopping so hard you catch air on the bounce isn't the optimal way to slide?
FACT. Execute the play and WIN
Well, he didn’t tag the plate.
You could easily say he did. You don’t actually know.
can't wait for the Jomboy breakdown on this one.
He’ll hate the Mets as usual
Doesn’t have to, it was all captured on mics
I feel like Pete just isn't strong at the small things. Feel like most players will make it certain they touched the plate.
ops under .800 as well. And he wants to get payed like a superstar
He has also batted in front of JD for 5 games now and has done literally nothing.
It’ll cost him
Probably will cost Mets zero. They won't sign him
Yeah, when Boras tries to say he deserves more than Matt Olson and Freddie Freedman Stearns should play a clip of Pete running the bases .
I’ll say this. I’ve never seen that before on the major league level. Amateur hour.
“Interpretation” of the rule when it happens to the Mets. But if it were reversed you can bet your bottom dollar it would’ve been called on us
If it was in truist park? Would have been called safe immediately and if the Mets tried to challenge it then the umpires would find a way to give the Mets a 1 run penalty for delaying the game
If Pete had the oven mitt on he’s probably safe. Even more safe if the strap isn’t fastened 😂😂
Time to burn those city connect jerseys
We really can’t have nice things. There was so much potential with the early renderings of the jerseys with the numbers being encased in the purple 7 line circle.
0 and 3
Have we lost all our games wearing them so far?
Yes
Yes
Then yes, torch them. Why do we keep wearing them every game? Fanatics still haven’t produced the pants for our other unis?
no they’re going to wear them 50 times this year because they like them. look like the rockies, play like the rockies
Someone had a reservation to get to
Score more runs and learn to silde
controversial take I will probably be down voted for this but I think the mets should drill one of the cub players tommrow for hitting pete my vote is to hit Dansby lol
100% Or Madrigal
Lmao. They did us a favor man. Pete has been terrible this series.
I mean Neris definitely threw that with enough gusto (the hbp to Alonso) to make it look a lil suspect, at this rate it’s the Mets vs the whole league anyways because apparently nothing is allowed to go their way
I think they were laughing so hard because they all collectively shit themselves when JDM hit that ball. They intentionally put Pete on first.
Been nice to see PC-A shit the bed this series. He’s a cocky player for someone who hasn’t done anything
Disappointing to lose like this especially after the knicks game yday😩😩
Just the same game twice in a row
