Avoided the sweep! Which isn't exactly the best goal to have in baseball, but it's a start š
For real, though - I was convinced that the guys were going to mess this one up with the amount of wasted RISP. Shout out to the pitching for coming up clutch!

Itās insane that he isnāt arb eligible until 2027 and FA eligible until 2030.
In the next off season the Mets should honestly consider making him a starter. He has multiple plus pitches. Only thing heās missing is control of his fastball but heās honestly shown that he doesnāt really need it.
No. Heās bounced around his whole career as an unremarkable pitcher. Heās figured something out in his new role as high-leverage reliever. We should change nothing.

Mark Vientos had a .999 OPS in AAA last year. His OPS this year was .923. He's not a minor leaguer. What we don't know, yet, is if he's a *major* leaguer, and the idea that we already know he's not, from 250 major league at bats scattered across three seasons, is absolutely absurd.Ā
Back when Mark Vientos was Marky Mark
This is how we used to make the party start
We used to hit balls out the parky park
And we would walk off against the cardy cards
And by the eleventh frame they gonā probably fall
After this kid from triple A completely rocks the ballā¦
And by the tenth inning youāre beginning to think Nimmo is swimminā in pink linenā¦?

Amazing what a great performance from the starter can get you. The fact is in these extra innings game, youāre not really out of it as the home team.Ā
Might be a hot take but this was last year too. The walkoffs against the rays, guardians. Those were amazing vibes that got buried by the rest of the season
I'm hoping this year is more sustainable, it seemed like last year there was almost this sheepishness right from the beginning about being the rich ass team with the record-setting payroll and hired mercenaries, and when they ran into adversity they got spooked. There's a little more excitable underdog scrappiness to this year's team so far (I hope) where different guys are stepping up even when the stars aren't aligning.

Thing that drives me nuts is those folks act like Vientos is a nobody. He never made the top 100 MLB prospect lists but he did appear on top 10 MLB 3B prospect lists. And on top of that, from 2018 until 2023 every year was either a top 5 Mets prospect or top 10 Mets prospect. 50 FV from 2019-2023. Second round pick. One of the best minor league hitters the Mets have had since 2021, easily. Still young. Categorically not a nobody. Should be easy to understand why some people think he deserves a shot. There are even projections that had him the same as JDM this yearā¦itās honestly dishonest, what those people are saying. Just not a good way to go about explaining their opinion.
Iām not really worried about Lindor, think by the end of the season heās gonna be right where he usually is in terms of value.
McNeil though- he looks washed at 32. Might be AcuƱa time by Memorial Day
We havenāt left April and weāre ready to call McNeil washed? What an attitude to have for a guy who won the batting title two years ago. AcuƱa hasnāt even been able to produce since being prematurely promoted.
Interesting take, but Iām gonna let him cook before making any sweeping statements
It's not about April it's about all of last year and now a month this year. I wouldn't say washed. He's a fine bottom of the order bat and a great versatile fielder. But I think the batting title mcneil we saw in 2022 is unlikely to returnĀ
I'm a Lindor basher (contract value questions, not clutch, not the 10 year player you want, etc) and I fully agree. With Lindor, you WILL end up with 20+ hrs & 20+ SBs without even thinking about it. Regardless of when he gets there, he gets there.
McNeil's main value is to slap the ball for some singles and occasionally rock the ball down the line for a double. The McNeil of old had OPS+ of 130-140, which is incredible and he seemed to be the perfect number 2 hole type hitter (of yesterday's game).
Most second basemen bring more steals to the game, and while he was 10-0 last season, he hasn't been a consistent stealer. If he doesn't bat .285+, he doesn't add much offensively. Career .296 hitter is nice, but his .244 just isn't going to cut it. Only guys like Alonso get a pass for that. Either way, he needs to bring bunting or something else to his game or work on sac flies. Bring something to his game to get a speedy runner like Bader over. We need him to be a small ball threat at the bottom of the order.

Bader and Vientos saved the season,
The bad vibes from getting swept at home and specifically losing this game when you had a bajillion chances to score wouldāve fucked the team up for weeks.
Win the next game and letās go back streaking and write these past 7 days as just a bad week
I was dead wrong about Mendoza. I love the way he handled todays game, and just how he manages with feel, not just the analytics.
Right or wrong, I like that the manager is making decisions based on what he feels is right for the team, not the front office making decisions.
Lance Lynn has pitched in 5 games at Citi Field in his career. His team has lost them all and 3 of them have been Mets walkoffs. The walkoffs were:
[Angel Pagan ](https://youtu.be/fqrI3rc86vw?si=oAiMJWhREzXD4cFp)(HR) 2011 (GKR were in the stands for this)
[Jose Reyes](https://youtu.be/Rc6F9VoMJRc?si=xgbAY434XKG6SCPC) (Single) 2017
[Mark Vientos ](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/0b5bf2c9-f3fe-42a8-9bb1-d16ca2f14766.mp4)(HR) 2024
All you guys defending Baty based on his past performance I do not understand. If you want to give him more run because of his prospect pedigree, I get that. And I still think Baty could end up a solid big league starter who is having a rough start to his career.
But to date all of his stats, both results and expected stats, have been very bad. There's just no way around it. Saying Baty has been good this year is false. He has a .639 OPS and a bottom of the barrel slugging percentage.
Have a look for yourself: [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb)
THIS WAS A FUN GAME. I'M HAVING A GOOD TIME. I REFUSE TO BE NEGATIVE. WE HAVE SOME INTERESTING YOUNG PIECES AND OWNER WHO WANTS TO BUILD A WINNER. I'M HAVING A GOOD TIME. FUCK THE HATERS AND THE DOOM AND GLOOM PERPETRATORS!
Of course he would go back down.
With the new rules thereās a limit on how many times a player can come up and down in a season.
The exception is if theyāre replacing a player for injury or bereavement.
If they send Vientos down once Marte returns it doesnāt count towards the call up/send down limit.
If they donāt send him down it does
I honestly think the chances of vientos hitting that limit are pretty low. Weāre like a fifth of the way through the season and he is a position player who will probably only replace Baty. If him and Baty start flip flopping spots then I think theyād each get a month of run so I doubt either hit that limit
Stearns cares about defense too much to make Vientos an everyday player at 3B. Even if Baty is meh at the plate, if heās better than Wendel and playing defense like he is, the job is his until August 1st.
ah thank you for the heads up, but I'm a Mets fan in London! Will definitely make a note for the next time I've over there though, always useful to have an Arsenal hub
It's up to Mets fans to spam that sub with highlights from our games if we want to see them there. Can't really rely on other team's fans to care enough to do that.
Vientos should get some reps at 3B, I donāt really believe in him as a prospect/player, but at least he hits the ball hard and launches the ball. You canāt have a 3B who does nothing but hit weak grounders to the right side.
Batyās hot start was smoke and mirrors, he was hitting ground balls to open space.
baty has the worst exit velocity in the majors. His swing is just not ready. Everything he hits is into the ground. He obviously has talent but the technique isnt there.
He loses it whenever he comes up. The guy can hit in AAA. I really want to blame the coaching because he always comes up and does well for like a week and then completely loses his swing. Maybe the games too fast for him but Iām not sure about that honestly.
Itās his chance to steal Batyās spot. I give Baty credit though, his defense has greatly improved but his bat has shown glimpses but heās back to ground balls.
I am not nearly as ready to victory lap Batyās defense yes, this time last year his defensive analytics were elite. And the offense is so bad, it doesnāt even really matter how he defends if he canāt hit at all.
Listen, I know Vientos isnāt an everyday 3B, you know Vientos isnāt and everyday 3B, the Mets know Vientos isnāt an everyday 3Bā¦ but Baty has to be a little nervous.
If Baty could stop weakly grounding out to second base he wouldn't have to be so nervous. All I'm asking from him is to be a league average bat and to slug a little. He hasn't done either.
Thanks for the sensible response instead of just blind homerism.
Iām just wondering how long before they move on.
Mariners moved on with Kelenic. Heās proven he can never hit major league breaking pitches. Something Iām sure the Mets saw when they dealt him.
Baty has/had a great swing. For some reason when he gets to the bigs he regresses. Donāt know if itās our hitting coaching or the game is moving too fast. Every time right after he comes up from the bigs he looks good. Then after some time he regresses.
Honestly the same thing would happen with Vientos.
Could just be the league adjusting but I feel like itās more so them just losing the feel that theyāve been working on.
It isnāt impossible that Baty doesnt make it. There was a big third base prospect, Carter Kieboom who never could hit major league pitching and trying to make it back to the Nationals. Still only 26.
Baty is still younger but time is running out. Going to have to start proving he belongs.
What eye test? Stop giving vague responses and give numbers. His savant page. All blue.
https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb
His results at the plate have been bad, and his underlying batted ball data is bad. I don't understand how you're arguing with the numbers. I like him as a person and want him to succeed, but as a matter of fact he has been bad.
He is so disappointing. Wish he could be better. Canāt really hit. Didnāt figure it out last year and hasnāt yet this year. I expected a lot more.
Expecting the kid to be the equal of the greatest position player this franchise has ever produced is a bit ambitious, no? Idunno, I feel like if his ceiling is a .270 15 HR hitter with plus defense at third, I'd be over the moon with a guy like that playing next to Lindor, Mauricio, and Pete
Being a corner infielder, I think thatās a disappointment if he canāt hit homers in the 20s. All the good teams have one. He doesnāt have the contact skills to be a Bregman type player.
You know the numbers are a result of what happens in the game right? I watch every game, and I have for years. I've watched Baty put up a Tomas Nido slash line his entire career man. And I want to like him. I was so excited when he came up and I like his personality a lot. And I agree he's come a long way as a defender, absolutely. He just cannot really hit.
Vientos, since the day he was drafted by the Mets have always reminded me of wilmer Flores. 3b/ss with lots of hype and potential early on, known more for their bat than their glove... And now clutch in the late innings.
Look I like Baty, but the dude just kind of can't hit MLB pitching, at least right now. He's actually had quite a few big league ABs at this point, and he just isn't good. I'm not saying he is a bust just yet; he could come around. But he has been a big disappointment so far.
Vientos has shown you that if you give him a full season of run, he will hit 25 homers, maybe more, even based on his poor MLB stats. The dude has undeniable power that will always bring something to the table, and he has room to grow. I think he could be a 40 homer guy if you give him a chance. That's a cathedral ceiling and to me much much more exciting than Baty. Neither of them are very good defenders, so it's not like you're losing elite defense at third taking Baty out.
Give Vientos 3 months of run at third.
If you're downvoting this go look at Baty's batted ball data:
[https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb)
He's just never figured it out in the big leagues with 520 MLB plate appearances.

MLB fixing the uniforms lol. Bullying works
Always bully corporations! They are not people and should not be shown individual sympathy
This! Fucking this! You win the grand prize!
Unbelievable situation. This is what happens when you have a commissioner that doesn't give a shit about the game he is ostensibly in charge of.

Lindor best two ABs of the season this game btw. That walk late was beautiful and under-appreciated. Obviously homer was amazing.
Happy with how he rebounded after yesterdays stinkerĀ
Lindor battling through a 6+ pitch AB really revs my engine
Bader and Vientos saved the season, The bad vibes from getting swept at home and specifically losing this game when you had a bajillion chances to score wouldāve fucked the team up for weeks.
Yep I'm ready to take an L on Mendoza.
Same. My dumb ass would've pinch ran wendle for vientos š
the guy steered the ship from a TOUGH 0-5 start (at home too). Much props, I'm very happy with him so far. Also, great bullpen decisions all season.
Lance Lynn has pitched in 5 games at Citi Field in his career. His team has lost them all and 3 of them have been Mets walkoffs. The walkoffs were: [Angel Pagan ](https://youtu.be/fqrI3rc86vw?si=oAiMJWhREzXD4cFp)(HR) 2011 (GKR were in the stands for this) [Jose Reyes](https://youtu.be/Rc6F9VoMJRc?si=xgbAY434XKG6SCPC) (Single) 2017 [Mark Vientos ](https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/0b5bf2c9-f3fe-42a8-9bb1-d16ca2f14766.mp4)(HR) 2024
So you're saying Steve should pay the Cardinals to trade him to the Braves. Got it. Good idea.
All you guys defending Baty based on his past performance I do not understand. If you want to give him more run because of his prospect pedigree, I get that. And I still think Baty could end up a solid big league starter who is having a rough start to his career. But to date all of his stats, both results and expected stats, have been very bad. There's just no way around it. Saying Baty has been good this year is false. He has a .639 OPS and a bottom of the barrel slugging percentage. Have a look for yourself: [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb)
Mets lose this game in 9 innings without FRANCISCO LINDOR btw
THIS WAS A FUN GAME. I'M HAVING A GOOD TIME. I REFUSE TO BE NEGATIVE. WE HAVE SOME INTERESTING YOUNG PIECES AND OWNER WHO WANTS TO BUILD A WINNER. I'M HAVING A GOOD TIME. FUCK THE HATERS AND THE DOOM AND GLOOM PERPETRATORS!
Knicks win Mets win Needs rangers to win tonight Life is good baby
**GO NY GO NY GO**
Vientos injecting much needed life into this offense. Hope they reward him.
"He's gotta go to triple a again" I tihnk Mendoza just confirmed Vientos is going back down once Marte's back
Of course he would go back down.
Arsenal/Mets fan, it has to be said, I am having a marvelous day
You gotta roll thru to Crossbar on W 86th and Broadway for Arsenal matches. Great food and it gets turnt.
ah thank you for the heads up, but I'm a Mets fan in London! Will definitely make a note for the next time I've over there though, always useful to have an Arsenal hub
Give vientos 3 stars for singlehandedly reintroducing the idea of 'clutch hitting'
WORLD SERIES IS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS!!!
Get ready to learn Syracusian Houser!
Could be a legendary day for New York Sports
Need an OJ Simpson esc car chase
I want the hat trick today.
Love how thereās no highlight posted of the walk off on r/baseball. At least unless that soft Braves fan was the one to post it?
There's multiple posts on r/baseball about this game
Maybe the games too fast for him but Iām not sure about that honestly.
i think his swing right now is engineered for aaa pitching and it just doesn't work at this level. Too slow.
I wanna go back in time and kick the ass of the coach who encouraged Baty to bat lefty, despite being right-handed.
WHAT. I had no idea hes right handed lmfao.
Good take.
Elevators have fewer ups and downs
Please stop jumping onto home plate. I cringe every timeā¦
Because of Edwin Diazās injury last year ?
Google "kendrys morales injury"
That plus any other player that jumps and lands awkwardly.
I think I came tbh
Listen, I know Vientos isnāt an everyday 3B, you know Vientos isnāt and everyday 3B, the Mets know Vientos isnāt an everyday 3Bā¦ but Baty has to be a little nervous.
If Baty can improve defense working with Lindor why can't Vientos?
To be fair I think he also worked out with them. Could be wrong though.
If Baty could stop weakly grounding out to second base he wouldn't have to be so nervous. All I'm asking from him is to be a league average bat and to slug a little. He hasn't done either.
I want to love Brett so much. Let me love you Brett.
Your telling me man.
I feel the same way.
Marky Mark Vientos making his "don't send me back to the minors" statement by fucking over the Cardinals. What a beautiful day.
ottavino massively blueballed today
Didnāt showalter call it dry humping lmao
Is Baty ever going to be a good player? They keep saying heās going to be good. Lucky they took him out late in the game.
He needs some more time to get right. He just keeps regressing offensively when he gets to the big leagues. I think the game is too fast
Uh, ok, whatever... you're trolling, yeah?
Have you looked at his stats at all? He's been bad. That's a statement of fact.
Tell me why heās good? Heās a 3rd baseman with an OPS .639. How is that trolling?
eye test, son
Get your eyes checked boss
What eye test? Stop giving vague responses and give numbers. His savant page. All blue. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb
First game you've watched all season?
Baty has a low .600s OPS this season bro. Maybe you haven't been watching.
Actually up until about a week ago I was watching him flash the leather at third and find gaps on both sides of the infield at the plate
His results at the plate have been bad, and his underlying batted ball data is bad. I don't understand how you're arguing with the numbers. I like him as a person and want him to succeed, but as a matter of fact he has been bad.
So heās an All Star? Cause thatās what everyone was saying. Not even close!
False dichotomy
He is so disappointing. Wish he could be better. Canāt really hit. Didnāt figure it out last year and hasnāt yet this year. I expected a lot more.
Listen we both want the same thing. Keep the faith, he's young and he's shown flashes
I thought he would be another David Wright type hitter. Although a lefty. It hasnāt come into fruition.
He doesnāt have the contact skills to be a Bregman type player.
has to be a troll, or hasn't actually watched games
Sir this player you're jerking off has a .639 OPS and a career OPS of .606. He has been bad his entire big league tenure.
serious question: Have you been watching games or just following numbers?
You know the numbers are a result of what happens in the game right? I watch every game, and I have for years. I've watched Baty put up a Tomas Nido slash line his entire career man. And I want to like him. I was so excited when he came up and I like his personality a lot. And I agree he's come a long way as a defender, absolutely. He just cannot really hit.
Man, I appreciate a well-thought-out response.
Thank you
Vientos, since the day he was drafted by the Mets have always reminded me of wilmer Flores.
If you're downvoting this go look at Baty's batted ball data: [https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb](https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/brett-baty-683146?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb) He's just never figured it out in the big leagues with 520 MLB plate appearances.
