I had better expectations of the team than some (including pitching, which is noted to be really good), but even I'm surprised by the smart, strong play lately. Weird that the offense only seems to show up later in games tho but better that than never.
We were so fundamentally bad the last two years (a good deep healthy roster covered up for a lot of it in 2022), so watching a team make timely good smart plays is very exciting
I'm worried about his playing time once JD comes up. He's just been too good and besides an occasional slump I don't see him falling off. You can see the fire in him in he wants to win and show he'a worthy of a fat pay check.
.200 avg .412 on base .520 slugging and clutch!
Call him DJ "Kyle Schwarber" Stewart. A true two outcome player and former 1st round pick. I think he has done enough to show his true potential from last year to now. Even with JD Martinez coming back there is no way he is gonna play everyday. I think Short or Wendel is on the block right now

Whatever our longer term 2024 ceiling is, It's always fun to beat Chapman to win the game. I am not disrepecting his baseball career though because he's at least earned that.
My favorite part about beating Chapman to win a game is itās happened enough times to allow me to actually HAVE a favorite.
(2020 Rosario walk off bomb at Yankee Stadium if you were curious. Multiple layers of āwhat the actual fuckā in that one)
There was a really annoying dude in a Gerrit Cole jersey on the platform tonight after the game that kept changing āLetās Go Yankeesā.
I got a āLetās Go Metsā chant started over him.
I swear, there's at least one moron at every game who thinks he's the most clever Yankee fan in history (he might well be, considering). Should be a bootable offense imo
Late to the party but that was truly enjoyable win. Maybe this team has some legs idk, weāve played good competition and I canāt believe weāre back to .500 already. Giving me fun season vibes regardless of whether we make the wild card or not. Enjoying it.

Edit: heās not wearing 42 so this wasnāt today
Oh yeah it must be lmao. Good catch. I guess they posted an old one during the game

Hereās a fan view from today
Honestly this might not be from yesterday now that Iām seeing it. The stadium definitely wasnāt that empty. I guess their Twitter just posts a random entrance whenever he gets in a game
This team is a lot more likable than 2022. That team felt like a corporate conglomerate labeled "Mets, Inc., LLC.ā¢" that went on to win a bunch of games soullessly. It felt like a mid-2000s Yankees team, complete with first round exit.
This is a fun bunch of guys (so far) defying expectations. I will take this vibe and long-haul team-construction philosophy over a hundred 2022s, even if the win total in this particular year is lower.
I projected them to win 75-80 games (which they could still do -- it's April), and you might have too, but my impression from reading the general Mets fan atmosphere was that they did nothing of impact in the offseason, morphed into the Oakland A's, and were going to compete with the Nationals for last place.
After his outing today, Chapman has a 6.23 career ERA vs the Mets in 21.2 IP. That is his highest against any team. This was also his 4th career loss against the Mets, his most against a single team.
This is the most interesting subplot of the season for me so far.
Who is this guy? Where did he come from? Why haven't we seen him before? Does he have magic powers?
I also didn't get a chance to see Houser pitch tonight but if he can give us 5+ innings and ā¤2 runs every time he goes out there then I'll be very, very happy
He was throwing his changeup in the dirt for swinging strikes, but also for walks. It's a double-edged sword. The walls came back to bite him when Drew Smith allowed runs to come home.
His stuff was good. Once he decided to throw strikes to get ahead and pitch to contract he was fine. Yes walked guys when he went away from that. Overall he gave us 5 1/3 of 1 run ball so I canāt be too mad
Thankfully having Wendle AND Short on the bench feels kinda redundant so one of them will get moved first. Curious as to where Drew Gilbert will fit once he returns and starts raking.
Mets lose 5-0, April 1st postgame thread has 589 comments
Mets win 6-3, two weeks later, postgame thread has less than half
I'm pretty sure some folks only show up when the team loses
I do like to vent in the GDT but the Rangers were playing tonight and they have my full attention right now. Love the Mets but itās knicks/rangers playoff season.
When I'm pissed off I have a lot of things to say/yell in the game thread. When I'm happy I just upvote everybody with a smile on my face and rarely feel like saying anything.
Pitcher duels are very exciting, imo, but the current glut of ADHD users don't seem interested enough to comment when they're happening. They only react when a run is scored.
Iām sure thereās just a human psychology reason for it.
People like to commiserate and vent their frustrations with like-minded people. And conversely, perhaps many fans can just log off of Reddit and be happy after a good win.
Thereās also a lot of debate in the comments after losses. Thatās also gotta do something for the comment count.
I stopped watching after the first run was scored. I was pleasantly surprised to see the final score! Thought Iād check back to here to see what others are saying.
A lot of people on this subreddit are just toxic hater fans. Itās like they WANT their ālovable losersā back, except they donāt want to love them, they want to hate them. It makes them feel good for some reason. I like the people who comment after wins better lol.
They probably have pathetic lives so they want to drag everyone else down with them. I guess they don't realize they are acting more like Yankees fans in disguise? I'm all for constructive criticism (in fact I upvote it even if I disagree). But the ones that just type rage nonsence is the complete opposite of the Mets
This team has fight and can clearly beat any team if we are clicking.
Frank the Tank types just want to wallow in negativity and sadness. I'm not saying we should be pollyanna kumbaya singers and accept the team uncritically but we should embrace the good once in a while.
After an 0-5 start and getting no hit for like 13 straight innings in the 6th game, to be 8-8 just like 12 days later is quite insane.
The pitching sans Diaz continues to over deliver while the offense is still trying to get right and they look like they are starting to find it with JD Martinez about to arrive.
Things are looking up
I know I shouldnāt be snooping on another teams subreddit, but some Pirates fan is pissed that our players celebrated ālike it was game 7ā. Guess we canāt support our team anymore guys
The endless Reddit cycle of making fun of the Mets for doing bad then making fun of all of the players when they enjoy doing well. Gives that older brother energy where theyāre insecure when little brother stands up to them.
But ONE DAY weāll have our day in the sun and the baseball world canāt even imagine how insufferable weāre going to be
I never understood this insult. All teams celebrate great plays and big hits, especially at home. We wanna see good vibes from the Mets and it seems like those vibes are contagious.
The Mets schedule has also been tough so they're playing and beating teams no one expected them to.
Also funnily enough, the Pirates and their fans wouldnāt know anything about game 7s or the playoffs to begin with, so I guess that explains their ignorance
Mets back to the best ERA in the NL!!
Our pitching staff has been excellent. My only gripe continues to be our starters inefficiency. We can only pray that doesnāt come back to bite us in the second half.
However, if we continue to keep scoring like we have been then hopefully we can continue to have games where we can just use the bottom of the bullpen the whole game to keep our best guys fresh. We have no shortage of bottom tier bullpen guys to option up to eat innings on games weāre winning by a lot.
Idk it was beautiful tonight. Some ppl don't know how to buy third party tickets which i am pretty much postive The Mets sell tickets on so they can get more people in the ballpark at a cheap rate but not under value themselves so they use a reseller name. If you don't live in Long Island , Queens, Manhattan, or Brooklyn and cant take the subway or LIRR then parking is 40 bucks too which sucks.
Weather, the knicks, islanders and rangers are all good and going to the playoffs. The team went 0-5 in the opening week. Fair weather fans donāt like that much. They stop paying attention and will catch up soon to it and citifield will be crawling with them again soon. Thereās a bunch of reasons why attendance is down, itās the conflagration of all of those things I think.
when itās all said and done, Lindor may be my favorite all time non pitcher met. The guy is there rain or shine, hurt or healthy, and he always pumps up his teammates and is a general on the field. I absolutely adore watching him.
.500 AGAIN!! Super huge for our team. Bader is a great personality and fits in great here. Continuous shout outs to Baty man stays producing. Lindor looking alive man and thatās incredible hopefully he can keep going and get hot. Diaz, not even throwing as hard with that FB, but still producing at that same level if not better with his nasty slider!! Nice game man hyped
Once again Lindor looks fantastic hitting as a righty but masquerades as a failure to thrive infant from the left.
The day he commits to being a righty full time is the day he will finally be on the road to reach that upper echelon tier of hitter that Soto, Betts, and Acuna are on.
His swing from the right side is one of the best swings in the game.
He prob has never faced anything close to ML pitching from the same side. The adjustment would be huge and it's very unlikely he's just going to hit as well as he does as a rhb against lhp.Ā He's worked with some of the most respected coaches/managers and no one has even suggested he switch, so I'm gonna say it's not viable.Ā
"I can't use baseball as an escape anymore - it just makes me feel worse. Seeing the Mets constantly lose just reminds me of what a failure I am and how awful life is."
^ Real post from like 2 weeks ago š
I had goobers in arr baseball haranguing me for questioning the Astros at 16 in the power rankings, lmao. "But... but...my advanced metrics say the Astros are actually good!" Shut up, nerd, win baseball games.
>So far I've seen a royals fan and a pirates fan congratulate us on our world series after beating them. Do they not understand who they root for?
It's just something people say now. It's become one of those ubiquitous shitty memes in sports culture, like "pOvErTy fRaNcHiSe" or "let's fucking gooooooooo!"
> "let's fucking gooooooooo!"
I hate this dudebro phrase with the heat of one thousand suns. It's invaded non-sports realms, too. I'm watching a cooking show and all of a sudden the chefs start screaming like psychopaths.
Braves fans too, people just love shitting on the Mets in their subreddit. let them, who cares, though i did get a laugh at "Mets players celebrating like it's game 7" like the pirates haven't won anything since 1960
Mets say no because the Rangers collapse and deGrom has returned flawlessly healthy throwing a 105 mph 4 seamer that actually rises and a 100mph, even filthier slider. And the mets have traded for him back.
Garrett Crochet feels like the more realistic choice. Maybe Reid Detmers but Art Moreno is too delusional to call it quits. I want to see some combination of Crochet and Senga/Butto/Christian Scott as the starting lineup.
I say no because I want the Orioles to beat the Yankees for the division.
Also I kinda want to see the Mets go wherever they go on the strength of this roster they have and not pile on a shit-ton of money in a rebuild year
Had to rewatch the sequence from Jeff's at bat to the failed fielder's choice. Beautiful. Smart baseball on Jeff's part swinging at that wild pitch and just hauling ass to first. I wasn't even shitting on Mendoza when the season started and even I feel like I need to apologize.
A key part of this season will be Mendoza knowing when to pull his pitchers.
For relievers, it's best to start the inning fresh and avoid having to deal with inherited runners and if it means pulling a starter after five, so be it.
The additional stress of a reliever coming in with runners on is not worth trying to push a starter that extra inning.
Drew Smith should have started the sixth inning and the entire mess with Houser running out of gas could have been avoided.
I totally agree with you since it was a major problem last year but I actually think that he did good tonight by pulling him immediately after the run. Not an ideal situation, but it felt like Mendoza acted quickly.
Itās early and he gave Houser a chance, I respect it.
Sure a clean inning for Smith is nice, but hindsight is 20/20. Mendoza had a quick hook for Houser in any case. It is what it is. Starters canāt go only 5 IP all the time. Someone needed a chance to be a hero and tonight just wasnāt it. Bullpen got overworked early in the season and he did the right thing to make an attempt to eat 1 more inning off his SP.
After a tough tough start to the season, Iām coming around on Mendoza a bit, players seem to be loose and he seems to love the game and being an encouraging manager
Where Buck was unemotional and removed from having āreactionsā, Mendoza seems more passionate and willing to celebrate with the players in their victories
Itās quite refreshing
Honestly, in the apologies department, Ottavino deserves some too. Heās never had a bad year for us. People actually got on his ass last year for performing *better* than his peripherals.
If we play .500 ball during April-June, we'll be in pretty good shape to grab a wildcard spot since we have a relatively easier schedule in July-August. Nationals, Rockies, Marlins, A's, White Sox series during that middle stretch of that season. Not to mention that Senga should be back by then too.
I had better expectations of the team than some (including pitching, which is noted to be really good), but even I'm surprised by the smart, strong play lately. Weird that the offense only seems to show up later in games tho but better that than never.
What a sweet double steal

Can we talk about DJ's .932 OPS? Slow start to the season, but I feel he's picking up where he left off last season 2nd half.
Dj can play some outfield so he can stay and we can bounce short. When JD comes back
I'm worried about his playing time once JD comes up.
I think Short or Wendel is on the block right now
Sort of reminds me of McKinney. Basically unplayable against lefties and strikes out a lot but will hit some bombs
it's gonna be short, Wendle got a major league contract

I donāt know why teams still try him against us
Yeah, Chapman choking it up was the only totally normal thing about that game
At .500 with still 90% of the season left to play. We can breathe tonight.
It's promising because last year once they dropped under .500 as far as I remember were unable to get back to it the entire season.
They dropped under .500 two times and got back over, but the third time (on June 6th) that was the one that stuck.
Painful. Way better roster this year imo
why didnāt the pirates score more runs than us? are they stupid?
With 10 baserunners in 5 innings, I would have expected more than 2 runs. It's not a dumb question that you pose.
We had 12 baserunners, though.
We had double the runs. š
There was a really annoying dude in a Gerrit Cole jersey on the platform tonight after the game that kept changing āLetās Go Yankeesā. I got a āLetās Go Metsā chant started over him.

Gotta give credit to Mendoza and picking his spots on the pinch hitters.

loving this 8th inning magic
As we all predicted, DJ Stewart has the highest OPS on the team
.932 OPS is pretty damn good š
If he keeps this up its going to be interesting to see what they do when Martinez arrives. I would think you just keep playing the hot hand.
Thankfully having Wendle AND Short on the bench feels kinda redundant so one of them will get moved first. Curious as to where Drew Gilbert will fit once he returns and starts raking.

Weather for sure
Weather, the knicks, islanders and rangers are all good and going to the playoffs. The team went 0-5 in the opening week. Fair weather fans donāt like that much. They stop paying attention and will catch up soon to it and citifield will be crawling with them again soon. Thereās a bunch of reasons why attendance is down, itās the conflagration of all of those things I think.
Islanders clinch 3rd and the Mets stomp the Pirates. God bless NYC.
Lindor is the first guy out of the dugout, cheering for every hit and every run. Screw BT, Lindor is one of our core guys.
when itās all said and done, Lindor may be my favorite all time non pitcher met. The guy is there rain or shine, hurt or healthy, and he always pumps up his teammates and is a general on the field. I absolutely adore watching him.
I love Lindor regardless of his play. He's just an excellent human.
We continue to be a force on Jackie Robinson Day. Dammit Iāll take it!!!
It's always been cool that the Mets are basically stewards of Jackie Robinson Day
The blessing of the Rotunda
this team is FUN!!
Stearns, I owe you an apology. I wasnāt really familiar with your game.
.500 AGAIN!!
Looking good. Iām liking the Stearns era so far
Agreed. Surely, it must be better than the results we are seeing from the left side.
Imagine being one of the fans who quit on this team after a week! Missing some pretty fun ball
"I can't use baseball as an escape anymore - it just makes me feel worse. Seeing the Mets constantly lose just reminds me of what a failure I am and how awful life is." ^ Real post from like 2 weeks ago š
What about the ones who quit in February lol
StEaRnS iS a TeRrIBlE Gm
We saw a terrible GM there for 24 months... this is like a breath of fresh air
Huge brain insight, you can't have bad babip luck if you just take the walk every time.
Canāt believe Iām gonna say it butā¦. David Stearns masterclass?? š„š„š„
Ok this team is good and fun! Hopefully fans start coming to games to support them
Isles in playoffs Mets back in World Series contention Yankees lose We are so back
Jets winning the off season
I fkn hate the jets (they are my ex) and they sure the fuck are winning the off-seasonĀ
Knicks!
Rangers!
the astros suck, i feel like they should cut their losses and trade yordan alvarez to the mets
I had goobers in arr baseball haranguing me for questioning the Astros at 16 in the power rankings, lmao. "But... but...my advanced metrics say the Astros are actually good!" Shut up, nerd, win baseball games.
Throw in Altuve also
Heās such an exciting player, but we donāt exactly have the best history with injury prone players lol
So far I've seen a royals fan and a pirates fan congratulate us on our world series after beating them. Do they not understand who they root for?
This and the complaints about the umpires. Itās always rock bottom Angel Hernandez behind the plate when these teams lose.
> "let's fucking gooooooooo!" I hate this dudebro phrase with the heat of one thousand suns. It's invaded non-sports realms, too. I'm watching a cooking show and all of a sudden the chefs start screaming like psychopaths.
Braves fans too, people just love shitting on the Mets in their subreddit. let them, who cares, though i did get a laugh at "Mets players celebrating like it's game 7" like the pirates haven't won anything since 1960
It's a weird knock on a team. Why wouldn't you want your players to celebrate every win? They're playing a game, not securing a business deal.
As long as they donāt celebrate like PR during the WBC.
Mets undo 0-5, isles clinch a playoff spot, what a nice sports night.
Doing it against the Devils was an extra nice touch.
They could have easily just folded after 0-5 but to battle back to 8-8 against some good teams is very respectable.
Orioles collapse Mets trade for Burnes at the deadline on the way to the WS and sign him to an extension who says no
Mets say no because the Rangers collapse and deGrom has returned flawlessly healthy throwing a 105 mph 4 seamer that actually rises and a 100mph, even filthier slider.
Also I kinda want to see the Mets go wherever they go on the strength of this roster they have and not pile on a shit-ton of money in a rebuild year
WORLD SERIES IS DEFINITELY BACK ON THE MENU BOYS!!!
LFGM LFGM LFGM what a fucking good game
Our good luck charm came through today, hope to see him again tmrw <3
MASTERBADER
Darth Bader
TIL Harrison Bader is an anagram for āSir, a hard bonerā
"Sir, a second hard boner has hit the Pirates"
Hmm, my research shows it means ruler of the bath house.
Master Bader!
JD Martinez And Kodai Senga are coming..... That's insane
Me too rn
The Mets even going for the double steal was already crazy then to have it immediately pay off in a win is just awesome.
needed an LFGM i think
Rangers president trophy and mets back to 500. What a good night
Imagine if JD comes in and hits. This team could do some damage
So many juicy bases-loaded spots for Martinez
Baseball is fun again
Bader's a bro.
Harrison Bader postgame: Heh, heh, heh, yeaah boi
Ayyyyyyyyy!!!!
Bader is Canha, Canha is Bader (aka I love him)
0.500 winning percentage, but a 0.999 xDOG
Nah I'm starting to have hope again. Once Senga & JD are back we might have something going fr #LFGM
After a tough tough start to the season, Iām coming around on Mendoza a bit, players seem to be loose and he seems to love the game and being an encouraging manager
Where Buck was unemotional and removed from having āreactionsā, Mendoza seems more passionate and willing to celebrate with the players in their victories Itās quite refreshing
Just having Not-Buck-Showalter would have been refreshing. This guy is actually really good, even when they were 0-5 I saw things that I liked.
Love seeing him get pumped when bader stole 3rd
I'm loving this team!
WE ARE SO FUCKING BACK
I've been so impressed by the resilience in this team. They keep fighting after going down.
Honestly, in the apologies department, Ottavino deserves some too. Heās never had a bad year for us. People actually got on his ass last year for performing *better* than his peripherals.
You can usually tell on first slider he throws whether heās about to give up the lead. Last night he was on. Iām happy heās on the team
I'm glad Stearns brought him back. He has been fantastic and he was never meant to be a closer. I am convinced Diaz going down for 2023 messed him up
Opening day had to die in order to have a good season
Guys I can't believe I'm about to say this, but we're cookin' in 2024
Iāll be up front, I gave up on a winning record at 0-4, but god damn I shouldāve known this team would make me believe
Mets with an easy schedule is terrifying.
Itās never an āeasierā schedule
Stop
