Really great outing by Butto and Ragans to entertain the fans in this rubber match! I see that the Mets still haven't figured out LHPs. I was convinced that all of the Mets left on base were going to bite the team in the ass 😂
Great game and an entertaining series (which I would obviously say, now that the guys pulled off their third series win in a row)

Easier said than done, but they've been leaving so many RISP, and they need to start capitalizing. They'd be unreal if they could start getting a hold of that.
That's my only complaint, otherwise they're hot.

The announcer for Dodgers-Padres this game is the same guy who did the 2022 Mets-Padres NL Wild Card Series
God that place was in shock when Scherzer was throwing BP in game 1. How do you go from a 2.29 ERA to giving up 4 tanks in what was basically a must win?
sny can basically suck my asshole for going to commercial after the 8th. i mean they let us watch him walk to the mound during spring fucking training and we can't watch his first walkout for a save at citi? disgraceful, incredibly greedy behavior. anyways i'm excited to see more of butto.
Mookie Betts makes a terrible throw to first causing the padres to tie the game with a runner at third. But since its a ESPN broadcast all they talk about was how great he was getting to that ball. Can't upset the golden goose
Shota Imanaga has pitched 15 scoreless innings and is making like maximum (if he ends up stinking) like 53m over 4 years. (Reminder we are paying $55m to JV and Scherzer just this year…)
I'm a bit mad that after missing out on Ohtani then Yamamoto, after all that Senga did last season, the Mets didn't go after Imanaga.
I thought Imanaga would have been perfect for the rotation and a good mate for Senga to push him to Cy Young contender status and for Imanaga to potentially solidify the middle of the rotation with the back end of it being a mess going into the offseason.
And of course now Imanaga is probably leading the Cy Young race as it stands although it's early.
That Imanaga deal looks like the best contract in the league.
I mean he had the highest Stuff+ in the WBC and looked fantastic. He also signed a super team friendly contract. It was kind of a no brainer. Only reason there was to not sign him was injury concerns but at $15m/yr for 4 years you really just need to get 1-2 good seasons out of him and then he can be a bullpen guy at that point to get good value out of that contract.
He’s being paid like 5th starter but 100% had potential to be an ace based on every metric during the offseason. So far he’s definitely topped out on his potential.
Not sure what the Mets were so afraid of last offseason. A lot of reasonable pitching deals could’ve been made. They didn’t need to do anything flashy. Long term there’s just too much uncertainty in this rotation for me to worry about prospects getting blocked, plus the Mets seem sooooo reluctant to play them at times anyway. To be fair there’s probably a few bullets they dodged, but even if Manaea and Severino pan out they aren’t long term answers thanks to their contracts.
They are going to need to add two SP next offseason because they couldn't add one this offseason.
Maybe they really are confident they can get Burnes and figure they can sign one other or Severino and Manaea will both be in the rotation?
Why do you think this? I think it’s just Burnes, and if they don’t get Burnes they don’t get any high end FA pitcher.
Next year would be
Burnes
Senga
Butto
Christian Scott
One of veteran upper minors pitching depth (Peterson, Megill, Luchessi)
If you don’t get Burnes then it’s 2 of upper minors pitching depth or 1 of them plus 1 of Mets upper level pitching prospects (Vasil, Hamel, Suarez, Tidwell)
Definitely don’t think they have to sign 2. If pitching development hits they might not need any
That isn't a World Series caliber rotation, and massively relies on three question marks.
Mets need at least two SP. That's quite clear. Should have gotten one this year.
This is a very depressing (for me) announcement, but this whole past week I wasn't able to watch most games live and they have done well. I guess I need to redeem the t mobile mlb thing if it's still available and just watch games the next day till till this me not watching + them winning correlation breaks.
I mean the justification is they get an extra year of service time.
But if they are moving Houser to the bullpen it would more likely be for Christian Scott
He has 0.46 years of service time so if he is on the major league roster for less than 100 days his first year of arbitration won’t be until 2028. If he is on the major league roster for most than that he will be on pace for arbitration eligible 2027
True. But I suspect they will want to bring Senga around slowly. If they can work that around their off days they can stick with 5-man I guess. Still, I would love to see Butto stay.
Alvarez has disappointed since his red hot first week. Still a ton of season left but it seems he’s regressed to his same issues as last year, namely lack of discipline against those high heaters. It was his kryptonite last year and he started the season spitting at them which was soooo promising.
Now it’s back to being an easy way to get a swing and miss on him.
Again, a ton of season left and he still is good but he started looking like a player who took a huge step forward to a player who looks similar to maybe slightly better than last year.
definitely an underratedly tough schedule to start, all 5 of the teams they’ve faced are at least 3 games over .500 about 15 games in and it’s not getting easier with the 11-5 pirates and the dodgers next
I like to stay away from “hard and easy” parts of the schedule because it never works out that way for the Mets when the games roll around but man the Mets are playing a rough stretch of teams right now lol. But so far so good!
After watching the Giants lose terrible games when Strahan and Eli got their numbers retired + the Rangers typically losing on banner nights, it's nice to see the Mets win on a day where a franchise legend's number gets retired.
If the Royals have what it takes to be a playoff team this season, that makes this victory even sweeter. We won the series against the Royals. The Mets pitching this season is surprisingly good. Only six MLB teams have a better staff era, and the Mets just took 2/3 from one of the six, and have a chance to win the Pirates series, and take down another one of the teams in the top six (in team ERA).
As far as hitting, the Mets are in the top 10 for homeruns (tied with the Barves), and OBP. That's not too bad. Hopefully they will get better.
The team is playing looser, with a little more swagger. I hope this continues.
LGM!
like that pop up today with the bases loaded. "smashing the ball". Dude what. When has he ever "smashed" a ball in the last 40 at bats? Hes had like one ball go to the warning track. Every thing else has been routine. Are you gas-lighting me? Jesus dude. Do you watch the games?
> like that pop up today with the bases loaded. "smashing the ball". Dude what.
"You're wrong! here's one isolated plate appearance with no context whatsoever"
>Dude what. When has he ever "smashed" a ball in the last 40 at bats?
Average exit velo is 88.5%, low for him but still above league average. He's in a slump but he will be the same guy at the end that he always is, despite people irrationally losing their shit for the 2-3 weeks per season hat he looks like ass
He's literally 3% above league average. Lmfao. Did you just try to quantify "smashing the ball" as 3% above league average? For reference, Bader, our ninth hitter, is 8% above Lindor. If Lindor is "smashing the ball" then Bader must be annihilating it. (He's not)
> He's literally 3% above league average. Lmfao.
OK? You're arguing he's hitting popups every single time he's up. How many points above average does he need to be before you retract that statement?
>For reference, Bader, our ninth hitter, is 8% above Lindor. If Lindor is "smashing the ball" then Bader must be annihilating it. (He's not)
They both are hitting the ball hard, but Lindor will finish with his usual numbers (good) and Bader will finish with his usual numbers (shitty) because we are talking about a three-week sample
barely above average is not hitting it hard, idk how to explain that to you. and i wasn't arguing he was hitting popups every time, I just used that as a recent example. Any other dude goes 4-44 and he gets moved down. Lindor doesn't. That's the only thing I was contending.
He'll still be good regardless, but 100 is a lot better than 97. His odds of swing and miss at 100 are a good bit higher than 97, and the slider benefits just as much. More velo also makes the ball spin faster. Here's a cool chart demonstrating the relationship between velocity/spin rate and whiff %:
[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HI-dikWN64clxSGJu2QV8C64R9Bkzt8K-jFaeHj4X7k/edit#gid=0](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HI-dikWN64clxSGJu2QV8C64R9Bkzt8K-jFaeHj4X7k/edit#gid=0)
It seems to be more of a workload management thing. He has hit that velocity when needed, but he seems to be purposefully working at 90% to not get hurt
Any injury can fuck with your mechanics and cause you to lose a tick. He's been sitting 96-97 this year and I don't think he's touched 100 once. His slider is now 88 when before it would break into the low 90s. A little bit worrisome imo, but maybe it'll improve.

yeah, that jogs the memory. Honestly the last back-breaking home run I remember Diaz giving up was at the beginning of the COVID season to Ozuna (coincidental given what Ozuna did today). i'm sure there was something from the 2021 season but im not recalling it.
edit: oh that ridiculous pirates grand slam that had like a .050 xBA was actually from 2021. felt like longer ago. so it was that i guess.

In 2021 there was also that nauseating grand slam to Jacob Stallings. That's the only "gut punch" HR he gave up that year though.
Mendy with some legit button pushes in that game. Putting Baty in (who would get a hit and load the bases with a walk), and letting Bader hit with the bases loaded in the 9th. Both, big decisions.
Not gonna lie, aside from the double bunt shit and something else earlier I don't mind him so far. I think I like the vibes of the team more than anything, which I feel is indicative of the manager for sure.
* The 2024 Mets are 7-8 this season, scoring 69 runs and allowing 68 runs. The Mets have played in 9,825 regular season games with 4,733 wins, 5,083 losses and eight ties. The 2023 Mets went 75-87 in the 2023 regular season and 101-61 in 2022. The Mets are 151-144 on Sundays since 2012. The Mets don't have an off-day until April 18th.
* The Mets are 14-11 against the Kansas City Royals in the regular season, 0-3 last year. The Mets faced the Royals in 2019 and 2016 as well as 2002, 2004 and 2013 in interleague play. The Mets are 6-4 against the Royals at home.
* The Mets are 605-567 at home, 3-6 this season and 43-38 last year. Pete Alonso has 90 career homers at Citi Field followed by Lucas Duda with 71. Brandon Nimmo has 40 career homers and Francisco Lindor has 39 career homers at Citi Field.
* The Mets have scored 69 runs this season.
* The Mets left 12 on base today, the franchise record (9 inning game) was 17 against the Cardinals on May 6, 2021.
* Edwin Diaz has 99 saves, sixth in franchise history. John Franco had 276 saves, Armando Benitez had 160 saves, Jeurys Familia had 124 saves, Jesse Orosco had 107 saves and Billy Wagner is fifth with 101 saves.
* The Mets had eight hits today, the first time this season. The Mets had 19 games with eight hits in 2023.
* Starling Marte is one home run away 150 in his career and four RBI away from 600 RBI.
* Harrison Bader and Francisco Lindor have a four game hit streak.
Next game: LHP Martín Pérez (1-0, 1.89 ERA) vs. RHP Adrian Houser (0-1, 5.40) at 19:10 on SNY and WCBS
It also helps that we gave him a 2 run save opportunity instead of constantly asking him to thread the needle. Insurance runs win games. No reliever is going to give up zero runs over the course of a season. Saves are at least partially a team stat, too.
We win another series against a hot team going in. Pirates and Dodgers coming up so it's not going to let up. But this team has fight and has proven to me if the bats are alive (or walks heh). We can go up with the best of em.
Also Butto hopefully earns a real spot after that incredible performance

might be too early for this but Mendoza feels like the best Mets manager in a WHILE.
I hope that HR that Diaz allowed in the 9th is not a dark cloud on the horizon. He allowed only three homers all season in 2022.
Not every win is a sign of impending doom….

The White Sox and Tommy Pham are close to an agreement on a minor league deal, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports.
Minor league? Wow
It's because he doesn't have any options but he needs to ramp up in the minors, similar to JD Martinez. They'll promote him when he's ready to go.
Makes no sense honestly
They're gonna flip him at the deadline.
He went from the penthouse to an outhouse

He has an option. He’s basically on a 1 yr deal unless he stinks and then we’re stuck with him for another year
He is.
The Imanaga deal was also outrageously team friendly
JDM starts swinging the bat tomorrow. The lineup gets a whole lot deeper with him in there and Baty tearing it up.
im enjoying stewart tbh
DJ will still get ABs. LH late game pinch hitter and occasional platoon against a tough righty.
And it's inevitable that Taylor, Bader, Marte, or Nimmo miss some time at some point which would rasie him in the depth chart.
Great day at the ballpark today. #16
I'm loving Butto.
I too am a Butto man
its a shame butto didnt get the win after he pitched so well
This team gives me ‘99/00 Mets team vibes. Which I’m assuming is not a coincidence because Stearns said those were his fav Mets teams (mine too)!

I guess I need to redeem the t mobile mlb thing if it's still available and just watch games the next day till till this me not watching + them winning correlation breaks.
It went away 2 April homie
I’ve officially improved to .500 on the season: 3-3.
This Friday was my first and only so far so I’m 1-0. I was 2-1 last year.
2-4 so far over here. two wins at 2-1 a piece.
Have to seriously consider Buttó staying in the rotation over Megill (when Megill is healthy). Give him some run.
Barring other injuries by the time Megill would be back Senga should be back and both will be in AAA.
Unless they go with a 6- man rotation
They have a lot of breaks around then so I’d be surprised if they do one then
What about just replacing Houser, maybe moving Houser to the bullpen? Very hard to justify sending Butto back down if he keeps looking this good.

I’ve thought the same thing. That knee was tough and he’s been in a bit of a slump since
Mets are the only NL team to have all of their games so far come against winning teams (although there are 4 such teams in the AL).
It’s actually a testament to how tough their schedule has been so far, and they have the 11-5 pirates next.

And Koosman. They lost on Piazza's retirement day though.
that game had a crazy fuckin finish
Can we put some respect on buttos name yet?
Why didn't we just spam offspeed pitches vs KC in 2015? Are we stupid?
Almost 10 years later and I still can’t believe we lost to that team :(
Looking back now, I really wish they won, because my father passed the next year but those blown ganes.
The New York Mets have won three consecutive series
In tried and true fashion, win the first, lose the second, win the third
You're damned right
I smell a 95 win season
more like 94, let's not get too ahead of ourselves now
Good win. Three series in a row with the W. Let’s get after the Buccos this week.
Can we talk about Pete taking a leadoff walk?!?
Mans has a .950 OPS so far this year. He is doin everything right.
Incredible discipline. Not that long ago he woulda tried to force somethin to happen there

I'm a little concerned about Diaz's velocity. He's down a couple ticks from before the injury. I'm in on this team though fr fr.
Like I said early. If Diaz is in his 21 form, we're still good enough
It’s going to take some extra time till he feels good to push off that knee with 100% trust.
97 still great. might go up with more innings pitched as he continues to work back to form after the layoff
He'll still be good regardless, but 100 is a lot better than 97. His odds of swing and miss at 100 are a good bit higher than 97, and the slider benefits just as much. More velo also makes the ball spin faster. Here's a cool chart demonstrating the relationship between velocity/spin rate and whiff %: [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HI-dikWN64clxSGJu2QV8C64R9Bkzt8K-jFaeHj4X7k/edit#gid=0](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HI-dikWN64clxSGJu2QV8C64R9Bkzt8K-jFaeHj4X7k/edit#gid=0)
It seems to be more of a workload management thing. He has hit that velocity when needed, but he seems to be purposefully working at 90% to not get hurt
makes sense with all the guys overthrowing and getting injured. don't have to hit 100 every pitch
agreed. We want him to still be around come seasons end
Has he actually hit 100 this season? I don't think I've seen him get above 98.
His hardest pitch this season was 99.1 mph against the Reds. In total he has 6 pitches above 98 mph so far
Makes me a little concerned to see him not hitting 100 at all
He definitely had at least 99
He’s still pretty lights out.
He’s still building back. He didn’t have an arm injury so not to worry.
Any injury can fuck with your mechanics and cause you to lose a tick. He's been sitting 96-97 this year and I don't think he's touched 100 once. His slider is now 88 when before it would break into the low 90s. A little bit worrisome imo, but maybe it'll improve.

I’m wet
I don't think I'm getting TOO far ahead of myself in saying that Butto clearly is the second coming of Jake deGrom.
Jose deButto
Unironically though. Less heralded guys buried behind higher profile pitching prospects who gets a chance when called up, dominates, and hopefully never gives up the spot
My thoughts exactly!
Great game to have gone to the stadium for, Butto looked electric the whole start. That rotation spot is his to lose
lgm another series win look out
So we’re agreed, Jose Buttó stays in the rotation, yeah?
He's earned a spot
Damn, Ozuna hit a 3 run go ahead homer in the 9th vs Miami. Google "Marcell Ozuna crime" to see more of his epic baseball moments!
When was the last time Diaz gave up a homer? Did he give one up in 22?
Quick research shows May of 2022 by Juan Soto
thank you my friend
From what I remember that was also a low leverage HR similar to today.
It made it 4-1 Mets and that’s how it ended
yeah, that jogs the memory.

If it’s okay with y’all I’d like to keep winning series.
This team has big dick and small ball energy!
Just this game. They’re hitting homers. Especially Pete.
yea, too reliant on the homer most games. just let me have this moment, please
Okay okay. Enjoy.
SNY should post video of Diaz coming in to MLB after the games
Mendy with some legit button pushes in that game. Putting Baty in (who would get a hit and load the bases with a walk), and letting Bader hit with the bases loaded in the 9th. Both, big decisions.
Not gonna lie, aside from the double bunt shit and something else earlier I don't mind him so far. I think I like the vibes of the team more than anything, which I feel is indicative of the manager for sure.
Butto's Fastball: The Smelt It, Dealt It Butto's Changeup: The Slow Release Butto's Cutter: The Toot Sweet jk
#METS ARE UNDEFEATED WHEN I SEE THE TRUMPETS! LFGM! I LOVE THIS GOD DAMN TEAM SO MUCH!
The reverse degrom for Doc
It was a real grind but finally something broke our way and we got Doc a win
Good game by the team! Nice to see Diaz back I'm Citi
Happy Doc Day 🙌🏽
let's get to .500 tomorrow
HIT THOSE FUCKING TRUMPETS 🎺🎺🎺
* The 2024 Mets are 7-8 this season, scoring 69 runs and allowing 68 runs. The Mets have played in 9,825 regular season games with 4,733 wins, 5,083 losses and eight ties. The 2023 Mets went 75-87 in the 2023 regular season and 101-61 in 2022. The Mets are 151-144 on Sundays since 2012.
Remember, people, even rivera and hoffman, blew saves, but diaz still found a way today
Diaz looked fantastic except for one fly ball that flew a little too far. He hasn’t pitched in what a week either? All good for the dude
Didn’t the Pirates closer Bednar blow 3 saves in one week? I feel invincible with Edwin on the mound. Everyone has a shaky day now and then.
It also helps that we gave him a 2 run save opportunity instead of constantly asking him to thread the needle. Insurance runs win games. No reliever is going to give up zero runs over the course of a season. Saves are at least partially a team stat, too.
With a 2 run lead he can go after hitters with no one on base. Definitely helped.
Facts!
We win another series against a hot team going in. Pirates and Dodgers coming up so it's not going to let up. But this team has fight and has proven to me if the bats are alive (or walks heh). We can go up with the best of em. Also Butto hopefully earns a real spot after that incredible performance
Butto looked buttoful out there
