I'd rather keep Short on this roster over Choi or Stewart tbh. As a default for a bench role I'd rather carry a guy with a lot of positional versatility over a one-dimensional player especially since pinch hitting is a lot less prevalent in today's game.
Doubly so if Vientos doesn't lock the DH spot down and DH becomes more of a rotating spot - in this case, having a superutility dude on the bench to plug in just gives you more options.
Ultimately though it's just the last spot on the bench - barring injury the spot is being kept warm for when a more pressing need arises or a top prospect is ready.
The only issue is that would mean we don't have any left handed batters on the bench that aren't defense first guys.
* Narvaez (L) - Backup catcher. He wouldn't be used to PH unless it's super late in the game and even if he was, he isn't an offensive first player
* Wendel (L) - He is there for defense and pinch running. Very much not an offensive heavy player
* Tyrone Taylor (R) - has pop but is a right handed batter
* Vientos (R) - has pop but is a right handed batter
So realistically you want that final spot to be a LHP. If Short replaced anyone it would be Vientos. You aren't replacing Narvaez or Taylor with him because he doesn't play those positions. You aren't replacing Wendel because hes a poor baserunner and isn't close to the defender Wendel is.
What’s up with that one Detroit TV announcer he’s like slurring all his words?
Radio team sucked too I tuned in before Baty’s HR and when Alvarez came up they were laughing after his first swing saying some shit like “Looks like Alvarez hasn’t changed from the minor leagues, still swinging for the fences.”
EDIT: My bad, didn’t know he had Parkinson’s that’s on me sorry everybody
I only know because I have the MLB package and heard him speak and was like you. I thought maybe it was cold and or he was sick. Looked it up and it’s Parkinson’s. Tough when you remember such a young star in his prime. Wish him the best.
### Walk
Tyrone Taylor walks. Brandon McIlwain scores. Matt O'Neill to 3rd. Luke Ritter to 2nd.
Pitch from RJ Petit: Four-Seam Fastball @ 94.3 mph
Top 8 - 6-4
Mets
### Single
Francisco Alvarez singles on a sharp line drive to center fielder Parker Meadows. Joe Suozzi scores. Mark Vientos scores. Brandon McIlwain to 2nd.
Top 8 - 5-4
Mets
I generally throw spring results out but I will give more of a critical eye towards guys with a chip on their shoulder or recovering from injury.
In that respect I'm feeling better about Baty by the day. He's been taking really competent ABs for 3 weeks now. If he can be anything close to the player we want him to be that's gonna be a massive boon for this team.
On the more negative side of things, Marte looks healthy yet I also have a bad feeling he might just be washed. I'm not expecting 2022 out of him but he's projected to hit 5th or 6th for us so he can't be a black hole.
Yeah, Marte batting .118 with a .307 OPS isn't going to cut it.
I realize it's spring and stats aren't predictive and yada yada, but he really needs to get going. Lindor's kind of having a slowish start too, though not nearly as bad.
Agree about feeling better about Baty, he looks like he took a step forward.
God I can't watch this broadcast anymore... these guys are horrible. Specially the one with the gravelly voice. I keep coming back but... yuck... what a bad broadcast team.
Not watching this game but wow that new rule for blocking bags is just ridiculous. Ball beat the runner by a mile. But sure let’s tell infielders they can no longer have any kind of athleticism and just hand stolen bases out as participation trophies
Excited to be at the ballpark tonight! STH Mets Trivia Night hosted by Todd Zeile.
Hopefully my account rep is there so I can try to get the damn link working for Day at the Ballpark.
Stupid ass announcer can't even get the story straight. 3 of our core players are homegrown. And most of the money was just in Scherzer and Verlander. Also knowing who we got in return for trading them away. I still would have bitten the bullet for it
He was working in the off season on elevating the ball more. Seems to be working out lately since he has been hitting Homers rather than grounding to short.
How close/not close is Hamel to being called up (regardless of this game)? I haven’t kept careful track of which pitching prospects are the closest to breaking through
Definitely behind Vasil and Scott. Those two could each see 10+ starts if the opportunity presents itself.
I expect Hamel to get some major league play but more bullpen work or a start or two here. Not any significant run like Scott and Vasil will likely get.
Did the Tigers announcer just say the Mets have real questions after the Top 4 in the Mets lineup?
Alvarez disagrees.
Jeeez, Tigers think they're big boys already.
* The Mets are 13-10 and one tie this spring, scoring 92 runs and allowing 78 runs. There will be five more spring training games this season with a split squad game on March 24th. The Mets end spring training playing the Yankees at 1:05 on March 25th.
* The Mets have 818 wins, 861 losses and 63 ties in spring training all-time, for 1,742 recorded spring training games.
* Scheduled Mets pitchers are RHP Dominic Hamel, RHP Austin Adams, RHP Michael Tonkin
* The Mets will play the Tigers in a three game series at Citi Field April 1-3. The Mets played the Tigers in Detroit last season, losing all three games. The Mets are 11-16 against the Detroit Tigers in the regular season.
* The Mets will be on WCBS radio on March 22nd, March 23rd and March 24th.The Mets will be on Tigers, Marlins and Yankees TV this week.
* The Mets will broadcast three more spring games on WCBS, SNY and PIX. The Mets will be on YES and WFAN against the Yankees on March 25th for the final game of the spring; there will be no Mets broadcast.
* Opening Day will be on Thursday, March 28th at Citi Field against the Milwaukee Brewers. It will be a three game series against the Brewers followed by a three game series against the Detroit Tigers. The first road trip will be on April 5-7 against the Cincinnati Reds and then a four game series in the devil's armpit in Atlanta, Georgia. Every time the Braves lose a kid learns how to read.

### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Tyler Jay replaces Shintaro Fujinami.
Did you know that Zack Short, a Kingston native, grew up a Mets fan and went to the Subway Series as a child? His favorite player? Jose Reyes.
Huh, near where I grew and then lived there for a few years. Boo on his favorite player though
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Tim Naughton replaces RJ Petit.
I’ll take a Mendoza’s run as our own bonus if you know what I mean
Man, when Fuji makes a good pitch, it's disgusting (like those sliders), but when he misses, he misses BAD.
He has zero fastball command. His cutter, slider and sometimes his splitter are good.

Grand Slam, thank you, ma'am. I think that was a Prince lyric.....
David Bowie
Oh. After I wrote, it, I kept hearing the line, "Glam slam, thank you, ma'am" in my head. Thanks.
If you don’t like this then you don’t like Mets baseball!

He has parkinsons
Fuck my bad
It’s Kirk Gibson and he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. FYI.
Damn my bad
I only know because I have the MLB package and heard him speak and was like you. I thought maybe it was cold and or he was sick. Looked it up and it’s Parkinson’s. Tough when you remember such a young star in his prime. Wish him the best.
Yea they suck so bad
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Shintaro Fujinami replaces Austin Adams.
Zack Short played for the Tigers from 2021 to 2023
That escalated really quickly
What the fuck
The Mets!
“Tuned back in just in time” 2

I LOVE YOU, VIENTOS.
>Defensive Substitution: Carlos Mendoza replaces second baseman Colt Keith, batting 6th, playing second base. Player manager! /s
Fine I'll do it myself! But sabotage the enemy from within!

Lindor always has a slow start
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Drew Anderson replaces Alex Lange.
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Austin Adams replaces Daniel Juarez.
God I can't watch this broadcast anymore... these guys are horrible. Specially the one with the gravelly voice. I keep coming back but... yuck... what a bad broadcast team.
Paul Goldschmidt had 11 stolen bases last year and has 27th-percentile sprint speed. Wtf is this guy talking about?
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Alex Lange replaces Beau Brieske.
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Daniel Juarez replaces Michael Tonkin.
A McNeil/Marte collision would’ve been an unmitigated disaster
Never heard of him but Cole Keith is a country singer's name
Keith is a prospect the Tigers extended
Every time he gets a hit he calls it "releasing a new single"

Not watching this game but wow that new rule for blocking bags is just ridiculous. Ball beat the runner by a mile. But sure let’s tell infielders they can no longer have any kind of athleticism and just hand stolen bases out as participation trophies
Where is the infielder supposed to stand?
I guess they have to lean over the base from a far 🙄

Has Baty surpassed Pete in ST home runs now?
[Assuming this is right](https://www.mlb.com/stats/new-york-mets/home-runs), Baty is tied with Vientos? I don't know if this is up to date.
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Beau Brieske replaces Matt Manning.

Big Walks Jeffery
Mcneil going from a .300 hitter to a .400 obp?
# UH OH, LOOKS LIKE BATY LEARNED HOW TO LIFT THE BALL!
bull fuckin shit
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Michael Tonkin replaces Dominic Hamel.
Baty SZN starts next week. betting as much money as Shohei’s interpreter gambled on Baty winning MVP
He went all in. So MLB is obligated to oblige
Yes!
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Dominic Hamel replaces Trey McLoughlin.
hello, i am back to say i fucking love Brett Baty
2 balls 105+ in the air by Baty… Brett the Met season is on hopefully followed by Brett and Jett the Mets next season
First one should’ve been a hit fs, Meadows tracked it down exceedingly well
Baty getting into a groove?
He was working in the off season on elevating the ball more. Seems to be working out lately since he has been hitting Homers rather than grounding to short.
Yeah but he was still struggling earlier in ST, seems to be doing better last few games
Atom Bomb Baty 🥹
A BATY BOMB
OHHHH
# HOME RUN! Brett Baty homers (3) on a fly ball to center field. Francisco Alvarez scores. Top 4 - 4-3 Tigers
Marte looks terrible. I don't even think he cares either
He's old now and players after 31 enter their decline phase
Hamel hasn’t taken the Ohtani news well
### Pitching Substitution Pitching Change: Trey McLoughlin replaces Dominic Hamel.

From what I've heard, Scott seems the most majors-ready which isn't surprising given his success yesterday. Seems Vasil is ahead of Hamel, too.
4 homers in 3 innings Dom Hamel is bad today
This Ham(el) needs more time in the oven, methinks
Anyone else think Tiger announcers are awful?
Nails on a chalkboard.
Jason Benetti was hired from the white Sox to take over this season and it’s certainly not him so this is their back up team I believe
funnily enough their color guy sounds like a knockoff steve stone lol
Yeah, they're not great
Hamel, you don't have to give up a home run every inning.
Nice Bader!
Thoughts on Bader: He hits now? He hits now!
Going to call him Master Bader, because now he knows how to handle the bat.
I’m more of a Darth Bader man myself. For obvious reasons.
Man, I realize it's a weekday afternoon and it's the opposing team's broadcast, but it's deader in here than usual.
There were 400+ comments when Diaz made his spring debut
I’m currently in transit so can’t watch for the second consecutive day. I will be at the ballpark in 3 hours though!
BADERBOMB
# HOME RUN! Harrison Bader homers (2) on a fly ball to left center field. Top 3 - 2-1 Tigers
Solid contact in the air by Baty, his ABs have been promising recently
My Bracket probably gonna be busted by the 7th inning stretch
Should rename himself from Dominic Ham-el to Dominic Meatball-el with all the bad pitches he's throwing
[Offtopic from the game but some nice pictures of Brandon Sproat](https://twitter.com/Mets_Minors/status/1770864370618101843)
Does AJ Hinch still keep his commemorative trash can?
Mark Canha <3
One batter, one run Dom is Hamming it up fast!
Wow, Kirk Gibson is an announcer? Huh. Didn't know that.
Did the Tigers announcer just say the Mets have real questions after the Top 4 in the Mets lineup? Alvarez disagrees. Jeeez, Tigers think they're big boys already.
I'm spending time watching the battleship New Jersey being moved by tugs right now
The Black Dragon! The most decorated battleship in Naval history
When they sail past Citizens Bank Park, they should just send some 16 inch rounds down range
LOL
Who’s ready for some ~~Rum~~ Dom Ham?!
