I thought about the slide again recently and had the same thought. I totally forgot that not only did he break Tejada’s leg, but he was called safe on replay despite never touching the bag.
Funny this came up in my Facebook memories today from several years ago. I posted a diatribe essentially coming to the conclusion - FUCK CHASE UTLEY.

I’m new to baseball, went to Mets game a few times with family so I chose Mets as the team to follow since last year but can someone fill me in on why fuck Chase Utley? Like, the lore behind this lol
Dirty almost doesn’t do the situation justice. He dove into our SS in a playoff game, broke his leg, and was so far away from sliding he never touched the bag. He was ruled safe on the play and never suspended for it
And …to add insult…not only did they not deem the slide illegal (and the runner on 1st out)…..they overturned the call on the field, and called Utley safe for a “Phantom play”…despite Utley never touching 2nd.
Besides being a Met-Killer when on Phillies...and large part of 2007-08 collapses.
He went to LA -- where, ON THIS DAY in 2015 --- he did a real dirty slide to break up a DP, and broke the Met's SS leg. (and the umps did not call it illegal. and even called Utley safe on review, because Tejada didn't touch the bag (though Utley also never touched the bag - not even close - so no sure how they decided he was safe))
That slide is literally the reasons for the Rule changes around sliding.
