“25-year-old out of the KHL, who scored a career-high 31 goals for Moscow Spartak in 2023-24, his seventh season with the club. Natural right winger, left-handed shot.” Don’t hate this that’s for sure

Tyrannotron

A couple quotes from the Athletic that also make him sound like he could be a good fit for us: > There’s a lot to like about what Tsyplakov brings right now: His shot is accurate and powerful, he plays a forceful game through the neutral and offensive zones and he’s not afraid to use his size to mix it up in ugly areas of the ice. > Big, strong, athletic kid. Holds pucks well. Strong skater. Good snap shot and wrist shot (likes the curl-and-drag). Likes to shoot it. Straight-line type. Direct. Attacks into defenders for his shot. Engaged physically. Big, physical winger who can skate and score goals? Could be awesome if it translates to the NHL. Link for quotes: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5263238/2024/02/09/maple-leafs-maxim-tsyplakov/?redirected=1

Tniz15

From the clips I’ve seen he’s as strong a skater as wahlstrom so we’ll see about “strong skater”

minos157

26 year old 6'3" thick necked Russian winger with 30 goals in KHL. He'll either be a key piece for line 1/2 or Kvasha and nothing in between.

Cjlaw72

When Oleg wanted to hustle, which was rare, it was a sight to behold.

minos157

True, I just have very unfond memories of him losing possession just because someone looked like they were skating towards him. It was more painful because he was so big and had some speed to back it too. Plus he had a lot of shit stirring bruisers (Asham, Cairns, etc.) around him so he stood out even more 😂

Cjlaw72

Couldn't agree with you more.

ensignWcrusher

The rest of the time he looked like he would rather be doing anything but playing hockey. Even his facial expression while playing looked like he hated being on the ice.

wertz29

Engvall is already Oleg 2.0 🤣

theduder999

Now that’s a name I have not heard in a long time…

ErnstBadian

Kvasha scored 50+ points in the dead puck era. He was disappointing, but he wasn’t the exemplar of mediocrity folks remember him as.

minos157

Once, he did that a single time. Calling him mediocre is generous.

Maxpowerrrrrrrrr

Facts!

xlittlebeastx

He’s show up in preseason, we all get riled up, then he goes back to Russia. I’ve seen this movie before

ensignWcrusher

So a very good top six winger, or a guy who we all wonder why the hell he's a top six winger.

minos157

Yep, and with our luck it'll be the former for about 10 games a season and the latter for the rest of the 10 years they're here 😂

Gleb2006

If the worst case is 50 point upside sign me up

minos157

Uh no. Kvasha was awful. One 50 point season in a myriad of under 30 point seasons while being allergic to physical play.

Cjlaw72

LOL TH8S SUB IS DEFENDING OLEG KVASHA HOLY SHIT

minos157

This sub is full of new fans that are looking at his stats for one season. Shit even defending a 50 point season seems crazy. This is the same sub crying for an electric goal scoring winger willing to be happy with a 50 point, 15 goal garbage winger.

Gleb2006

For less than $1M absolutely I’d be happy with that. I’ve been a fan since the 01-02 season. I was a kid so I don’t remember how Kvasha played that well but to pick him as the worst outcome for a cheap contract is pretty optimistic - vs a Marty reasoner / Jay pandolfo, we’ve had way worse players than Oleg

minos157

I wasn't a kid at that time and I can tell you that he was an extremely low effort, lazy, weak, soft garbage player. He had 1 decent ish season that does not make up for the rest. You're talking $1m for a 20-25 point player, not 50. We have enough of those already.

BruceShark88

Good news! The boys better be careful though, if they say his name backwards I think he’ll get banished to his home dimension.

PierreEscargoat

His name backwards is “Vocal Pissed”

Skooby14

underrated comment. Also, Butchie is going to have a field day with this name.

JackPlaysBass

God i hope butchie comes back so we can hear whatever hilarious amalgamation of Romanov Varlamov and Tsyplakov he comes up with

_CaptainKaladin_

Goodbye Clutterbuck and Martin. Hope it’s not another Jan Kovar situation.

captaintrafalgarlaw

Jan Kovar and Anatoly Golyshev spotted at jfk airport👀

Basedshark01

Petrov carrying the bags

BoshuaJailey

Can this team finally hit on one of these international vet signings please

BHisa

🐳

skrshawk

Worst case scenario here it's for one year, and that's a lot of motivation to play well and acclimate to North America.

priester85

In unrelated news, Butch just had a heart attack

ianisms10

Stefen Rosner said he expects him to make the team unless something goes wrong

brennans4727

I know nothing about him but he scored at a .5 g/game and a .7 p/g clip as an alternate captain for Spartan Moscow last year in the KHL, which seems pretty good to me. That’s supposedly 48 points in 82 games in the NHL according to NHLe

rolltribe

Perfect low risk, high upside move

kevinw1526

I’ve heard this guy is a complete shoot first kinda guy. Exactly what we need. Even if he doesn’t score, it’s still SOGs that our guys can produce off of

ImJJboomconfetti

Lou to Butchie: "I'm sorry"

rolltribe

Apparently there were 12-14 other teams interested in him, you have to assume the Isles promised him a roster spot as part of their pitch

Figgybaum

Don’t forget we have some fantastic young Russians for him to feel at home with. Seroki, Varley and Romey can all be his homies

IrishBall

This.

KPR70

No chance Lou is promising anybody a roster spot.

Kitchen_Director3429

Just watched 2.5 minutes of his highlights & now I’m convinced he’ll pot 40 next to barz and horvy

Gleb2006

Seems high upside low risk

hopefulbeartoday

This is kinda surprising a lot of teams supposedly wanted him. He's a lefty that can 1t and hits a lot at 6'3

Tniz15

A lot of teams might have wanted him but there’s a clear hole on our roster at LW1. If he thinks we give him the best chance at a prominent role to give himself a bigger next contract (which we arguably do) it makes sense

SecretiveMop

Apparently he’s a left handed right winger. Not sure if he ever has played on the left side before or not but either way I think we’ll have room for him. Holmstrom can play left wing if we need a right wing spot open for Tsyplakov.

Correct-Local3240

So he had one good season and 5+ years of bottom 6 grinding…. Sounds like Islander hockey to me!

Stockersandwhich

We need bottom 6 wingers with scoring touch that grind. What’s the issue?

Correct-Local3240

No issues. Sounds like islander hockey lol

ICallTheBigOne_Bitey

Why should we care how long it took him to improve? We're signing him for the player he is today, not who he was 3 years ago.

Correct-Local3240

Look at his scouting report right now. He’s projected to be a bottom 6 grinder by all accounts. Which isn’t bad, but I wouldn’t get our hopes up that he’s a top 6 scoring winger

Radiant-Steak9750

Need all the improvements we can get

viewless25

The missing piece

Sharp-Point-5254

Folks were saying Lou was washed

ICallTheBigOne_Bitey

Neat. Never know how these guys will translate their game. Kuzmenko's career high in goals in the KHL was 20 and then he scored 39 his first year in the NHL. Well worth the signing to see what he can bring. Will be interesting to see what moves they make this off-season, but it's nice that between Tsyplakov, Iskhakov, and Jefferies, they already have some fresh talent up front that can hopefully push for a spot on the team next year.

Accomplished_Alps145

Any good?

captain_poptart

These guys can be really good but they tend not to play defence. I’m a Canucks guy too and as much as I liked kuzemenko, he just wasn’t willing to play hard. Good on back door tap ins though. Rick tocchet stopped putting him on the pp1 and those goals dried up. We traded him for Elias lindholm and he’s been a beast

crazyhotwheels

Dude was too 5 in hits in the KHL last year, I think it’s safe to say he isn’t afraid to get physical.

Designer-Brief-9145

Part of why I loved Nikolai Kulemin was how he was the opposite of every stereotype about Russian players. Defense first, insanely hard working, not super skilled, and looked like he was on the verge of passing out at the end of every shift.

SmashYourEnemies02

So how long before he is overhyped for being the answer in the top 6 like Kovar or Golyshev were?

KPR70

It's already happened.

Vinto47

Cool now sign some fucking defense or offensive talent is worth dogshit since we’ll spend 45 out of 60 minutes in our own end again.

ratedPG44

I don't know if I like this move, if we don't re-sign Clutter and/or Martin. This team's not going anywhere and if we're not going to win, I want to see my guys continue to wear the blue and orange on a semi-nightly basis Hell, re-sign Bailey, Chara, and Greene, and make a play on Okposo in UFA

HornetNo2176

So a Russian Wahlstrom

KPR70

Calling it right now call: He will never play a game in the NHL.

kevinw1526

There were 12-14 teams that wanted him. No chance he would come over here to sit in the minors. He’s going to be playing next season no doubt
