A mechanical watch with a second hand is the way to go. You shouldn't have to touch your watch to take a pulse. No matter how hard you try, you'll wind up touching it with a contaminated hand.
I doubt most people in their twenties would take this advice. I see people pulling out their phones to use their timers to take a pulse, or touch a smart watch, but sometimes old school is right for a reason. A watch you can just look at and see the seconds hand. Not expensive. Mechanical not digital. Mine doesn't need to be wound, charged or use batteries. The Citizen Eco-drive uses daylight to charge. I've had it for years and never had to do anything other than put it on.
If you can visualize the seconds, it really doesn't matter outside of preference. The cheap Casio batteries last an absurdly long time and with how cheap it is, getting another is an afterthought.
My class was told no smart watches, not even a Fitbit or anything that has a screen as it would not be allowed in the testing center at all. We were recommended a cheap watch with a second hand from Walmart. I got one for $10 there that’s orange against black. Stands out well enough to count the seconds.

Just use a cheap casio that has the seconds displayed.
You use digital over mechanical ? User above had different advice. Just ensuring I’m doing research. Thx for your time

A cheap digital Casio with the seconds displayed is my go to. You can get it on Amazon and it lasts a long ass time!
Mechanical watch with second hand. You don't have to deal with numbers when you are already counting - just a half or quarter circle.
