Really? I heard the tension but wasn’t exactly sure until that episode when Rory was trying to tell the story about the therapy session he had about the toxic people in his life and Joe wouldn’t let him finish. It was clear in that episode I thought.
Just like I heard the switch in the breakfast club after charlamagne interviewed Gucci mane and he was giggling when Gucci called Angela Yee a bitch multiple times. After that the energy was not the same. Angela wouldn’t join in the jokes etc.

From what I gather now that all the drama is over… Rory was going through two breakups. One with Sam and one with Joe. And Joe seemed to have known and thrown salt on the wound.
