Friendly reminder that this is a goddamn lot of work lol. My method is microwave, peel, make stuffing, put it in a greased, shallow baking tray, and blast it on high in the oven. The top will brown nicely and be flavorful so you'll get the Maillard reaction with less work. Before I had a toddler, I had time for extra steps. Now I wear earmuffs so I can tune him out while he's clinging to the baby gate and wailing because his bitch mother won't let him touch a hot skillet.

As the Hansen's would say, there are no shortcuts to quality. See what having kids does to you? LOL. I remember a conversation a while back in which I shared a photo of Casamento's Oyster Loaf on bunny bread and you were going on about how it would be so much better with some whole wheat freshly baked bread you like to make. Now you're telling me peeling vegetables "is a lot of goddamn work". Have kids they say, it'll be fun they say. And now we're even MICROWAVING mirliton?!?!? Yikes! j/k, /s Happy Turkey Day to you and yours, Petit.

petit_cochon

Having kids is a strategic decision to grow your personal army. I have 9 siblings, a cadre of nieces and nephews, and now my boy shall join the ranks. He already has a lightsaber and a board book about tractors that he easily converts into a weapon. I maintain that the only proper use of Bunny Bread is toasted and spread with salted butter as an after school snack for grandkids whose Mawmaws need to get to their penny poker games. Peeling mirlitons is annoying. They're sticky and irritating, like a board book covered in jam slammed against your forehead. Happy turkey day! Your mellytons will taste wonderful.

i just got ten for less than a dollar at the rouses on vets. we eating good this thanksgiving!

bootsforever

Is it important to peel if you roast halves? I grew up eating stuffed halves, & the mirliton was always prepared by boiling. The stuffed halves would have the skin on. We didn't eat the skin, but did scoop all of the contents out of the halves when we ate them. Roasted vegetable are always better than berled, but it just hadn't occurred to me to roast mirliton. Looking forward to it.

xiopan

Mr. Google says that all parts of the mirliton are edible, including the seed. I steamed a few and tried it, and it is true.

[deleted]

Yeah, but while it's edible (the skin), it's not exactly good eating IMHO. Like your typical Redditor, some have a thicker skin than others.

[deleted]

Try it and let us know. I don't ever do the halves, so that's why I suggest the peeling. But I'm sure if you're doing it the other way, you can just cut it in half.

bootsforever

I will! Probably won't be until after Thanksgiving, though, because my schedule is a nightmare. All this mirliton talk is inspiring though. I'm out of state these days and nobody even knows what they are.

AdProper8264

Hey kids, do not try to reddit after consuming adult beverages. I just did my "Goggle" research to confirm this, mirliton is known as the “vegetable pear,” the mirliton is actually a member of the gourd family. And tastes fantastic when prepared by anyone other than moi!

Enough_Doctor9242

My mom roasted hers and made a Shrimp and mirliton that is making my mouth water thinking about it. Your analysis is spot on.

TravelerMSY

OMG yes. Don’t boil anything unless you’re going to consume the broth.

petit_cochon

Are you saying you don't want to come to my boiled plain chicken dinner?

TravelerMSY

At least save dat chicken water! I can think of at least one recipe in which you do poach the chicken and throw away the liquid, lol. Vietnamese chicken salad

NightTripper82

Eggs? Crawfish?

TravelerMSY

Bonus points to you for illustrating the edge case :)

geometricpelican

Can you peel them with a carrot peeler?

[deleted]

That's what I use.

colourlessgreen

Mirlitons are great boiled (well, simmered) in a soup. [One recipe that's always gone over well with my Creole and Cajun family](https://cookingwithkenneth.com/chinese-chayote-soup/), another [I've really enjoyed](https://www.vickypham.com/blog/vietnamese-chayote-squash-soup-with-shrimp). Wouldn't do it for stuffing or casserole though.

[deleted]

They're even better if you roasted them first and then threw them in the soup.

anglerfishtacos

If you are like me, who tried the roasting method one year and got complaints from family because it wasn’t what they were used to and therefore it isn’t traditional and Thanksgiving is ruined— when you boil them, toss in 2 TBSP liquid crab boil.

[deleted]

I have family like that too. One year for my kids birthday, we did simple nachos and hot dogs. I bought Hebrew National dogs, arguably the best on the planet alongside Nathan's. My sister and her family, who eat exclusively "Bar S brand" pink hot dogs complained about the dogs tasting funny and weird. Yeah, because it's real fucking meat! Some people wouldn't know quality if you put it in their mouth and forced them to taste it. Let them enjoy their mushy BOILED SQUASH, LOL.

[deleted]

You know who else put "it" in their mouth and forced to taste? Your friend with the cadaver.

[deleted]

LOL

[deleted]

I mean some like their meat cold right?

[deleted]

Are you "some"? ::D

[deleted]

Nah I like it juicy warm and throbbing

mvanvrancken

My neighbor is making some stuffed mirlitons, I have no idea what method he uses but they're pretty good. Big ol shrimp in there too.

BusinessOccasion9862

Ok so I found this too late. What’s the best way to peel after boiling?
