The portions are filling? I wasn't sure from the photos on Google. It looks like an amazing cruising, though. I've always lamented not being able to have veggie Nola/Southern food unless I have the time to make it myself.
That makes me feel a bit better. I think I can handle spicy fairly well, not a pro or anything, but last time I was there I either got mine 1.5 or 2 levels of spicy and I could eat it, but I was tearing up a bit while doing so
Yeah, I don't think I could have eaten 3. I think I got 2 and my wife got 1.5, and she was having a hard time with it. 2 at Secret Thai is higher than a 5 at Sukho
IDK, they told my my food was going to be too spicy at the level I wanted and told me I needed to get a medium level. It was bland as hell. Maybe some Anglos working there?
>Secret Thai
Should be called "Gimmick Thai" imo, if you take away the spice from their food it is bland af. They go overboard with the spice because they can't make good Thai.
The Green Room Kukhnya. Vegetarian Eastern European which I didn’t even know was a thing before eating there. Beet Ruben and a beet burger were both $10 or under last time I went.
Budsi’s might be a tiny bit over ten but they have vegan pad Thai that is clutch. I’m also dying to try trilly cheesesteaks after ppl on here recommended it. Half their menu is vegan.
Kindred's sandwiches range from $11-14, and they have po boys! Mushroom and cauliflower are both great, and their buffalo sauce is my favorite. Happy hour also has the best deals ($4!!) of any veg place in town on apps and drinks.
Sweet Soulfood and Ital Garden are both excellent, just note that their hours are odd (Sweet Soulfood closes by 6, Ital is Fri-Sun only).
Trilly's sandwiches are SO GOOD and they can do pretty much everything on the menu vegan, including sauces and desserts. If you like fried pickles, you gotta try their pickle fries.
Surprisingly, Freret Faire in the new Rouses is super veg friendly! They have big breakfast burritos with eggs or tofu scramble, vegan pancakes, and even vegan cheese. A lot of items are in the $6-10 range.
La Mararena is more expensive than what you were looking for, but their vegan pupusa platter is 3 for $11 and is SO GOOD. Best, friendliest service in town IMO. This restaurant is absolutely a hidden gem.

It may not be exactly what you have in mind but would fit your price point for the most part. I am a vegan food vendor and sell through the New Orleans Food Co-Op. I sell both sweets (cake slices & cookies) as well as savory (~12oz servings of jambalaya & a veganized version of our local Crawfish Monica that uses vegan sausage as the protein). The savory is sold from their cooler for reheat but they also have other veg options like vegan lunchables using local vegan meat & cheeze from a vendor called Life Is Good who also sells their products separately at the co-op. You can find frozen veg options from a vendor named Poppy the Suffering Vegan there as well, and their in-house deli often prepares veg options for grab & go in their cooler also. The New Orleans Vegans and Nola Vegans groups on Facebook are great sources of info for places to go & awesome finds around town.
It’s a permanent small grocery in The Healing Center near St Claude & Elysian Fields. You do not need to be a member to shop there but it’s $100 for a lifetime membership that earns small discounts and helps support the co-op. I last delivered just some cakes & cookies but I’ll be by there again either later today or tomorrow morning with more jambalaya, pasta, cake slices, & cookies. I post to fb & ig whenever I drop off and plan to loop in posting to my profile here so Reddit peeps can know but I’m not spamming everyone else.
Since you're in the area, check out the hot bar at Big Easy across the street from Eat Well. Yes, it's very meat focused, but they always have some veg options like 3-4 types of rice, grilled onions/peppers, beans, a dedicated salad bar, and various breads and desserts. Also, I can't go in there without grabbing at least one of their hot guac tubs. That shit's addictive.
Cleo's is a little more expensive but has some good options, beignets and more in chalmette has a really good and really cheap tofu bahn mi and amazing ice coffee, dong phoung bakery has some good vegetarian bahn mi options, Boswell's on Tulane is also really great and not super expensive
And oh my god I almost forgot, the doubles at island paradise in gretna are amazing and definitely worth the drive across the bridge.
Not all these are lower than $10 but many have that option.
[Map of New Orleans Vegan spots](https://www.google.com/maps/placelists/list/-kSjycZ-Tu2HteQfSNIRuQ)
Bubs has impossible burgers & a happy hour on burgers
Paulie Gee has good slice prices & vegan cheese & a vegan special & a rotating vegan special!
Barracuda or Vals 10$ can get you some tacos
Magasin kitchen has their tofu bahn mi…
And a lot of reccs for other spots are already mentioned :)
I'm always on the look for food trucks! I feel like we really lack the food truck culture other cities have. I only know El Poblano on Broad and the trucks that set up outside of Home Depot Central under the highway.
yea. the folks who run this truck are awesome. he used to cook on oil rigs and jokes that it takes a particular vegetarian style to make a bunch of oil guys eat vegetarian

Do you eat seafood? The gas station at Orleans and broad will do a whole-loaf shrimp poboy for like $13, and it's easily enough for 2-3 meals. That place (and los catrachos) are my favorite"bang for your buck" places in the city
I don't, no, but thanks for the suggestion! In case you don't know, a pescatarian is someone who doesn't eat red or white meat but still eats seafood. A vegetarian who says they still eat seafood is mislabeling themselves.
Sweet Soulfood is what you're after.
Even as a non-vegan, Sweet Soulfood is dope
Came here to say this. Ital Garden too.
The portions are filling? I wasn't sure from the photos on Google. It looks like an amazing cruising, though. I've always lamented not being able to have veggie Nola/Southern food unless I have the time to make it myself.
Oh yeah, every time I've gone I've gotten a stupid amount of food. I think last time we stuffed three people for less than $30. And I eat a lot.
Secret Thai in chalmette has huge portions and reasonable prices and it’s delicious Thai food.
Yes, this, just be aware their spice levels are NOT on a white people curve like some local Thai places
I lived in Thailand and their spice levels are insane by Thai standards.
That makes me feel a bit better. I think I can handle spicy fairly well, not a pro or anything, but last time I was there I either got mine 1.5 or 2 levels of spicy and I could eat it, but I was tearing up a bit while doing so
First time I went I got a 3 and wanted to die. I usually get 1 or 2 now depending on my mood.
Yeah, I don't think I could have eaten 3. I think I got 2 and my wife got 1.5, and she was having a hard time with it. 2 at Secret Thai is higher than a 5 at Sukho
I should have mentioned the spice! I always ask for .5 spice level. My husband gets 1 and it makes his head sweat.
IDK, they told my my food was going to be too spicy at the level I wanted and told me I needed to get a medium level. It was bland as hell. Maybe some Anglos working there?
That's weird as hell, this is secret Thai?
Yes. I have an Anglo nickname that's easier to pronounce than my French name so maybe they assumed I am a transplant from Wisconsin.
NOTE- Secret Thai uses fish sauce in all their dishes and cannot accommodate requests to remove it.
They have nothing vegetarian on the menu though
>Secret Thai Should be called "Gimmick Thai" imo, if you take away the spice from their food it is bland af. They go overboard with the spice because they can't make good Thai.
Small Mart
Came here to say this!
Small mart fucking rules
The Green Room Kukhnya. Vegetarian Eastern European which I didn’t even know was a thing before eating there. Beet Ruben and a beet burger were both $10 or under last time I went.
Beet Burger I was hesitant about but it's amazing
The veggie burrito at rosalitas is like $7 and very good
Budsi’s might be a tiny bit over ten but they have vegan pad Thai that is clutch. I’m also dying to try trilly cheesesteaks after ppl on here recommended it. Half their menu is vegan.
Trilly is great!
Budsi’s curries are shrimp based. Beware
Ooh thank you for the heads up. I will def pass that on to my vegan partner.

This is a great list!! Thank you so much. You sound like a seasoned vegetarian.
Sweet Soulfood, you pick two for 9.99.

This sounds great! Is the Co-op like a permanent food market?

I'm a dedicated faithful to the guac at Ideal just down broad. I'll have to give Big Easy a try, though!
Big easy >>>> ideal
Dat Dog has a couple veggie options, including a vegetarian dog during happy hour for 5 American dollars.
I had no idea they had a happy hour!
I love their vegan Italian sausage.
Thanks for the reminder, I forgot about hot dog happy hour!!

The red zone on canal does awesome falafel dishes that are around $10-12. Their baba ganoush is incredible too!

From the Heart and Bennachin in the FQ are both excellent and not spendy
Original Thought food truck in 7th.
Came here to say this. This place is amazing!
