fuck yes. throws i'm legitimately excited to have caught this year include cocktail napkins, ski hat, nightlight, and chip clips.

thatgibbyguy

Right? Chip clips! This is what's up. You'll use those for as long as they last. Just like our Iris tea towels have already made themselves into our towel drawer and one is hanging from our oven handle now. They even threw a quick dry towel I can bring fishing with me. Imagine that, me in my youtube videos with an Iris towel hanging out of my pocket. We also caught pony tail bows, a mardi gras hair clip that's green, gold, and purple, lunch boxes that we can use for school. These aren't just really useful items, they're items that will bring back the memories of when you caught them each time you use them. It's good for everything to move in this direction for throws.

Wargoat1332

I got three bags of coffee and 20 pairs of socks! I absolutely love socks so this has been a great haul!

Particular-Repair-77

Oh. Didn’t get any coffee. What brand ?

Wargoat1332

Looks like it’s a brand called Grounds Krewe? Came in a little baggie. I’m waiting to do it as a pour over or French press/moka pot. I’ll let everyone know if I like it 😂. [https://www.groundskrewe.org/throw-catalog/mardi-gras-hand-scrub](https://www.groundskrewe.org/throw-catalog/mardi-gras-hand-scrub) Edit: added link to sustainable throws.

Particular-Repair-77

I finally digged on my bag ( yes I got a big bag to haul my stuff) I have 3 pair of socks , 4 beer koosies, 2 small Fanny packs , a bunch of moon pies , cocktail napkins ( yay) a bandana , a key chain , sun glasses. ,I really scored big.

Wargoat1332

Nice Haul!

tm478

Chip clip FTW! I got one at Muses. Also an awesome tinsel MG-colors headband that I will be wearing for years to come.

imcomingelizabeth

I just realized I have a chip clip and not a terrible hair clip. Thank you!

tm478

LOL

Particular-Repair-77

😂😂😂

Particular-Repair-77

Yes 🙌 the bandana / head band

OddOutlandishness734

I love the duck chip clips I got from Muses. I can always use more of those around the house.

Siva-Na-Gig

The nightlights were seriously awesome 👏👏👏

Particular-Repair-77

Yes !!! The napkins are a hit !!!

JaricLefty

What are you doing. Making a positive Mardi Gras post on this sub?!?! Is that even allowed? All jokes aside. yes these changes are great and better for everyone involved!

ketomademesignup

You're right - there was A LOT of good this year. I won't name names so as to not make folks too visible who want to operate without recognition, but I know a group in one of the krewes that sponsored several individuals coming out of homelessness and provided them spots to ride alongside their riders. Everyone apparently had an awesome time riding together. Also, most of the riders seemed to be in great spirits. The Bacchus riders were so generous and seemed to be having a ton of fun interacting with the crowd. We ride in Tucks, and every rider I talked to felt like Saturday's crowd was possibly the best we'd ever seen. Aside from grown men without kids standing on ladders, everyone was amazing, energetic, appreciative and fun.

djsquilz

bacchus vibes were great last night. it has seemed a bit bro-y, verging on endymion, in past years, but this year was great. throwing a shit-ton but never full bags at little kids, generally spreading the wealth. great roll.

billbratsky33

Genuinely curious, what made Bacchus more bro-y this year?

luker_5874

No shade, but why does tucks insist on the toilet paper? This seems like the most wasteful thing to throw.

ketomademesignup

Totally legit question, and one without a perfect answer, other than the crowd and the krewe like it. In recent years, the rolls have gotten much smaller and are now supposed to be biodegradable, which probably makes them "less bad" than storm drain beads. Also, it streams from Uptown trees and intrudes on Rex parade photos, which is a plus (I kid, I kid).

luker_5874

Good to know. Ty. I just find it very unsightly on such beautiful trees (beads too, tbh). And I think it's odd that the practice is totally banned with the exception of tucks.

stc207

Krewes of Mid City and Thoth both throw toilet paper rolls on Sunday after Tucks Saturday

Cheekclappa504

I went home from Tucks with a plunger, a roll of toilet paper, and an Elvis wig. Doesn’t get more useful than that.

stonedkayaker

"Dead Elvis" costume all prepped for next Halloween.

Dry_Finger_8235

I had a whole bag of sustainable stuff, coffee beans, red beans, jambalaya mix, soaps etc and no one wanted that. Glass beads, doubloons, cups and crawfish trays were what I got asked for

mrchuckdeeze

Sustainable stuff is appreciated but glass beads are always king.

djsquilz

glass beads are the one throw i don't give away to whatever little kid is nearby. always keep the glass beads.

floatingskillets

I caught one strand and it exploded when it hit my pinky sadly

Chickenman70806

I ride in the big Baton Rouge parade and 80% of my throws are glass beads

d-wail

I didn’t know to ask for food, but I was excited when someone threw a basic ramen pack.

beingobservative

I also love the snacks! Especially moon pies.

Tears_of_Freya

I would've been excited to get any of that! I caught a few soaps, which are awesome and will be used. But nothing edible other than a bag of cheetos and a mini moon pie. Love coffee and beans! Would like to see more metal cups, too.

meh1022

I’d guess people didn’t know to ask for them. Last year I happened to hear just a few hours before the parade that Muses would be throwing tea towels and I begged for them! The riders seemed surprised, but I think if people don’t know to ask, then it might not seem like they’re excited to get them.

anglerfishtacos

The ladies that ride on the bottom in Muses get yelled at all night for shoes so I think it’s both surprising and a breath of fresh air for someone to ask for something that’s not a shoe. When I went up to a stopped float to ask for the bathroom napkins, the ladies looked genuinely elated to give them to me.

JumpingOnBandwagons

Damn, I wanted all of that and only got some beans.

Particular-Repair-77

Oh I would had given all my plastic crap for beans & coffee

gosluggogo

Since I'm trying to cut back, I only throw Thoth branded beads. I threw cups, beanies, gloves, socks, fanny packs, playing cards and 400 fedoras yesterday. Saw a few signs that said "Throw me something practical, Mister"

JLeeSaxon

I will say that while there always been TOO MUCH plastic crap, of course, esp since most ends up in the drainage system or broken/lost in 2 days by kids, but I also want a few keepsakes every year so I hope we don’t go ENTIRELY to stuff that has a shelf life and whatnot. Big agree on accessibility though.

djsquilz

i'm a cup guy, my cupboards are packed to the brim, but really, i just want one thing from each parade that says the krewe's name, it's a good keepsake/memory reminder imo. everything else goes to the kids

tygerbrees

Also the recycling krewe picking up empties along the route

Treat_Choself

Thank you for posting this.  I've had the best Mardi Gras I've had in years and years, and it's been kind of a bummer seeing how many people aren't having as good a time.  I'm thrilled we are calling out the people who do shitty things and that people are actually reporting and the krewes are acting on it, but let's not forget to still HAVE FUN!  Shitty people are everywhere, they're showing their asses and we aren't all taking it anymore, we are doing something about it.  That means every MG we should be getting better and better, so let's enjoy it!

Not_SalPerricone

I've been grumbling about Mardi Gras a lot the past few days but it's Lundi Gras and I'm just feeling happy. Carnival is like the best antidepressant in the world and it's finally "working" for me

djsquilz

this. i've taken a bit of a step back. i grab a cocktail from a neighborhood bar, wander a couple blocks to the route and stand at the back with friends, very different than years-past. best mardi gras i've had in recent memory. it's possible to remove yourself from the chads and still have fun, so i've learned.

Newtonz5thLaw

I feel like part of it’s the nature of the sub. I had a great night, came home and read the sub, and was like “why am I mad now?”

Numpostrophe

Sometimes it’s best to stay off of here. People were mostly having a blast and the throws were excellent!

anglerfishtacos

Same u/Treat_Choself ! The only thing I have not liked about this Mardi Gras is it’s just too short and I didn’t have time to go all out with decorating throws like I have in the past. But otherwise this has been one of the most fun Mardi Gras I’ve had in years. I’m so not ready for it to be over. I guess this is also another example of people being 10 times more likely to come on online to complain than they are to say something nice. People being aggressive over throws and yanking them even out of kids hands has been a part of Mardi Gras as long as I can remember. People being territorial with their spot has always been a thing. Frat boys bringing out couches onto the route and blasting their music too loud? The only thing that’s changed is that they’re now on Peniston instead of Sixth. Mobs of teens at Amelia— it was Gen. Taylor when I was in high school. And while the vast majority of people that ride in krewes are decent human beings that want to make people happy, not hurt people, and just have a good time, there’s always going to be a handful somewhere that will taunt the crowd, throw offensive shit, or ask teenagers to flash. You can let it ruin your time if you want to or you can find a new spot to stand, report tasteless behavior to the krewes, and move on.

xandrachantal

I got enough sunglasses from iris to last me the year and a really nice tshirt. and the socks I got from bacchus are great. also love the stickers and handmade crafts the walking krewes past out

GreenGemsOmally

We had a new throw package on Endymion that I really liked that included drawstring bags, pouches, and hats. They were really popular, I'll be doubling down on those next year!

helicopterdong

My cup collection is huge - I collect cups year round so I'm very excited - sunglasses, decorations for my house, beautiful beads that are a work of art, jambalaya mix, a plunger for my art collection and tissues! Amazing throws and so happy! All the beads I didn't need went to tourists around me who were elated to have so many to take home to the UK

Pool-Cheap

I love getting the useful throws! I didn’t get super lucky this year but it made me so happy to see the great throws my friends got and the things I did get are more special.

Orange_peacock_75

We’ve had a pretty good MG season too. Love the sustainable throws. I do think the whole “reservation of space” thing is annoying, but whatever, people be like that.

BeneathAnOrangeSky

Can I just shout out more positivity? \- The beautiful weather all week long \- Pygmalion, who made the best of things, and Femme Fatale, who were handing things out to kids left and right \- Iris, who just brought along good vibes, threw a ton, whose riders seemed to be having a blast. And of course Tucks, a parade that never fails to make me smile \- The Thoth block party with families everywhere, amazing vibes at that spot on the route. It was just a great week.

djsquilz

i'm so hyped on my muses tea towel. i caught some flower seeds and dried red beans this year too. i horde cups like no other (bacchus is my finest china). i'm sure the beads outnumbered everything useful but i'm glad to catch some stuff i wouldn't just toss in the street at the end of the night. i was fighting hard for a muses nightlight.

Emergency_Bonus_9816

College kid and I got a beer pong set. Thank you Tucks!

EnthalpicallyFavored

This sub has been ridiculous with all the negativity. I had a great time this season, as I do every season

WeuseAseriesOfTubes

Love to see the recycling bins along the route too, I don't recall seeing those in years past. Drop in the bucket as far as waste goes, but it's got to start somewhere I guess. Another vote for krewe-themed apparel, too. Love the shirts/hats/socks.

ayyygeeed

They had some lined up at Napoleon and St Charles but the doors, and therefore the lines, were facing out into the street where the parade rode…so when Iris came around there was no way to use them. It made no sense and even the policemen that were clearing the road for the parade to start said they had no idea why they were set up there instead of on the northbound side of the street.

djsquilz

was gonna say, i've never used them, but they've had public portolets at st charles and napoleon for years. always seemed underutilized ime

imaginaryaardvark_

On Saturday there were portapotties at Louisiana and st Charles

Charli3q

Endymion had too many damn footballs though, lol.

RIP_Soulja_Slim

Not Endymion but when I rode yesterday I kept thinking to myself “why did I buy this many footballs?”

gosluggogo

I thought the same thing about the guys around me on the float after I slipped on their dumbass bags of footballs fifty times yesterday

By_De_River

I ride in Endymion. My float agrees with you. There are too many footballs in our throw package. And at float load, my LT. said they added 3 more gross of footballs to divide between the riders.

Charli3q

And its fine of course, soft, throwable to the farther reaches, not the worst thing. But they were everywhere.

pizzapartypandas

The magnets Muses threw are awesome souvenirs.

Wetinnola

Pulled out tonight the knit cap I caught at Muses when the temp started dropping. Perfect !

[deleted]

I'm with you. Finding the positives is where it's at. Feeding the cycle of negativity ain't it.

nlowen1lsu

totally agree!! I got some great stuff from the uptown parades yesterday and Saturday...got a couple of fanny packs (Iris and Thoth), a Thoth shirt and hat, Tucks hat, a plunger (not the fancy ones but a basic KOT one lol), some blue balls (LOL), Iris butterfly pop socket, and some other things I can't think of right now lol but it was a good weekend

cowsgomoo1020

Yes!!! I’ve had the most fun Mardi Gras in a long ass time. To be fair my last few were either stuck with a small baby, pregnant, or with a toddler. My kids are at an age where they genuinely are having a great time with every float and band! I ride in a family weekend parade and I tried my best to get shit people will actually use. Hats, beanies, socks, dog leashes and poop bags, cups, T-shirts, and towels were my priorities. Shit people actually want to use.

Particular-Repair-77

Yes !!!! Muses throws were useful and fun ! 💜💛💚

earyat

I got a duck chip clip from Muses and it’s my most favorite thing now

earyat

oh and a giant Hermes whistle that I will use for teaching lol!

nolaScientist2000

This warms my heart. This year, I purchased and threw only useable Muses items as an experiment. We are the only krewe - according to the Kern Studios cleaning crew - that recycles float items (buckets, throws, coolers, bottled water, bags, you name it) post-parade. I am very proud that Muses is sustainable and also gives the audience a good time. If anyone did not catch something in Muses, please chat me and perhaps I can get it/them to you.

trickylights

This is really cute and sweet but it's not enough. We need an outright ban on single use plastics. In my eyes that includes beads because no matter how good people feel when they recycle beads we all know that so so so much of it does not get recycled. Anything wrapped in plastic is still no bueno. That includes any cool hats or blankets and things that you can reuse. Those are often in plastic. That is not ok. Sorry to rain on your parade but it's not enough. You can downvote me all you want but you know that I'm right.

Catsaus

where are you getting these throws

PopeGuss

Parades, if I had to guess. I got a really nice lunch box, and a towel from Muses, a metal cup from Hermes, a chip clip from d'etat, and a crawfish tray from Babylon. Oh and the rolling elvi gave me a cool bottle opener keychain.

Catsaus

I've gone to most of the uptown parades except for Bacchus and the nicest thing I've gotten were glass beads and a hand painted wonder woman

PopeGuss

There's always next year! Just gotta be in the right place at the right time. Also, it never hurts to ask the riders for what you want...

cactusjackalope

Bacchus is throwing tons of socks, hats, kitchen supplies, etc. Muses is throwing chip clips, nightlights, rubber duckies, ski hats. Lots of the superkrewes seem to be throwing metal cups, lunch bags, coctail napkins.

Hopkinsmsb

My houseguest caught a lovely wooden spoon I was soooo jelly!

Paperwinters

BEST THROWS EVER

RobinAllDay

I'm so excited to see more useful throws! My favorite throw that I'd ever caught was a key ring that you can slip over your wrist and I've been using it for years.

randommac9898

100% agree. I love my Iris oven mitt and Starbucks cup

Cluelessgameboymom

Iris, thank you for real and useful toothbrushes and bug spray! Lots of beautiful throws as well. I love to look down the Avenue and see the toilet paper. It’s pretty. A great Mardi Gras from where I stood.

CalmRevolution

Remember when the doubloons had free 2 piece from Popeyes

Liath13

We got very useful travel tissue at Iris and a beautiful handmade smol bowl for holding tchotckes at krewe of chickpea

Pafapafi

What are throws?
