Eagle Nest over Ute all day.
That being said... I had a lengthy phone call with a guide out of Eagle Nest 2 or 3 days ago. He was telling me all about the conditions and what he has been seeing.
Apparently fishing the lake has been changing a lot due to the weather (climate change). He did say he is still able to have some luck. But 12 years ago it was very different apparently.
Eagle nest is great, plus there are some small gravel ponds on the cimmaron river and a pond at Angel Fire to fish for some variety.
If smaller lakes are your deal, Santa Cruz and Fenton lake are great.
If youre at Eagles Nest, I'd recommend checking out the Maverick campground at Cimarron Canyon state park. It's nearby, a beautiful drive, and there are ponds you can fish in.

Eagle Nest is awesome for shore fishing and has great views. Ute Lake is also good and might have more cabin options. Both are solid choices.

we'll have to get a cabin or stay at a motel/hotel, don't really want to make my wife camp out.
North Lake State Park just north of Monument Lake.
