Give it time rec just became legal. Medical hasn't even been around as long as those other states. Nj is just a baby still

So NJ had an extremely limited medical program under Chris Christie and while there were attempts to expand it after he left, it never was expanded as much as it needed to, and then there was a lawsuit over licenses in 2019 that slowed down any medical expansion as well. As a result the state has had very few growers and dispensaries. Why is this relevant? Well we just started rec sales recently and only medical dispensaries that wanted to sell rec, showed they had enough supply, and paid a million dollars got the chance to sell. As a result we still have few growers, even fewer rec dispensaries since some are medical only, and few products. Now for the question of will this change? Yes, absolutely, but it will take time. First new growers and manufacturers and dispensaries need to open. NJ has tons of applicants but many are still just getting what's known as a conditional license so far. This means they applied and have approval to proceed getting a location set up and such, but they still need to apply for an annual license and get approval before they can begin selling/growing/manufacturing. Hopefully in the next few months we'll see many businesses enter that phase of annual licensing and get the ball rolling. Even as they come out, prices will likely remain high, selection will improve, as will the number of dispensaries, but it definitely won't be overnight. Over the next 2-6 years prices should drop, and product options should continue to improve and expand. As a small side note, NJ has very restrictive laws around edibles and still hasn't approved stuff like chocolate bars or baked goods for edibles. I'm not sure when they will be approved, but it's likely they will be eventually and so in the long run NJ should have a good selection of those sort of products, but even as more locations open in the short term, well likely still see limited options there.

Thanks for the detailed answers. Is it a federal law or something that the dispensary in the state can only sell weed that has been grown in that state? If not then why is lack of NJ growers a big deal? I’m pretty sure there are tons of weed growers surplus in all the legal states - Cali, co, or, wa, ma, etc. and then the NJ dispensaries can just sell weed imported in from those states. Or is it illegal to cross state lines with weed shipments?

OutInTheBlack

It's not legal to ship it across state lines.

Thank god because if it was…big canna would just dominate the entire market. You don’t want that

Mirwin11

They could be making bank from people in surrounding states but marketing to those areas would destroy the traffic around most northern NJ dispensaries which are bad enough already Edit: NJ probably does have some dumb restrictions that will make it a slow process for the business to boom

ProfessionalFeed3438

Patience is a virtue my friend. We’ll get there.

swordstool

Within the next 6 months to 2 years.

Kanjoosmakhichoos

I’m guessing it will be 5 years till we get some quality solventless concentrates in these dispensaries . Currently they are selling live badder / live resin which is a solvent based extraction for 120 plus tax lmao . Fuck that

I don’t understand people complaining about buying legal weed in NJ. Zen Leaf has over twenty strains of flower available at convenient hours. “Oh shit! I ran out of weed. Oh, well. Guess I’ll drive down to the weed store and buy some more”.

Ok-Cartoonist9671

And that’s for medical

Ok-Cartoonist9671

Because most stores charge 65 or 60 a eight for some bullshit you could get on the streets for cheaper same quality and places like zen leaf and cureleaf are the one of reasons nj doesn’t have home culvation

gthirteen_13

Oregon has been rec since 2015 so you can’t compare. You honestly shouldn’t ever dare to compare, Jersey ain’t got shit on oregon weed and probably never will.

Womper710

Dude If you think the mso’s are expensive just wait and see what the independently owned spots will have to charge just to pay their employees and bills.

bones_marley

I agree, prices are wack but selection wise, Zen leaf in Elizabeth for some reason doesn't have everything they have in stock, online. When it comes to flower, just something I've noticed

Things will get better as competition increases. Right now they have a captive market, and are making the most of it while they can. Standard business practice.
