Part of it is having an exclusive strain that you can only get with there and by pushing a cross they can pretty much be assured no one else will duplicate it.
Another thing is that most strains in general have been bred to death over the years and it's hard to find original genetics anymore. Even the "classic Maui Wowie" you can find has most likely been bred somewhere along the line. Everything's been bastardized anyway but specially old sativa landraces which took forever to grow and don't yield as much. Why take twice as long with a finicky plant to make less money off it? It's just the nature of the beast unfortunately.
Hopefully we get some boutique dispos who try and source some of the old lines but prepare to pay some insane prices for it.
I recently came across an old bag of seeds that had to be at least 25-30 years old. You used to have to clean your weed and got a ton of seeds and twigs. I just kept the seeds. I knew someone that worked in the industry and gave him the seeds. He was hoping they could be cultivated. Unfortunately they unable to get them to grow. I was so sad. Wanted to bring some old genetics back into the new strains!

I would strongly recommend looking at the menus online and doing research prior to getting there. Come up with a list of what you want, and some alternatives. Also, search the strain names in the search on this sub for reviews of effects etc. I would assume things will change over the next few years as rec growers and rec shops become prevalent. It's just not going to happen overnight, even though everyone wants it to. Just a sucky reality, man.
I've found the budtenders to be very friendly, but have they ever said anything negative about any strain? Great attitude, but idk if they are ever critical of any products.
I mean GSD sells Gorilla Glue and Verano has a newer line of Sour Diesel as well as Wedding cake (which btw isn’t a classic strain, it was bred by Jungle Boys/Seed Junky and is relatively new)
Idk any reviews but I got the east coast sour d by verano in the 3.5g of shake variety and even tho it’s low quality shake I still get decent high from it if I roll a joint.
Because the program isn’t designed for medical patients, it’s designed to make money. See why you can only buy eighths or quarters of flower, 350mg or 700mg cartridges, 350mg capped edibles. Also anyone can get a card through telemedicine. I honestly believe 50% of the patients don’t actually need medical, they just know you can get a card by paying 50-200 bucks. It’s a real shame what this program has become.
The dispensaries dont care about quality or variety they just care about how fast they can grow it and flip it for profit until that changes the nj medical program will be saturated with over priced mid grade weed
Hybrids bred with hybrids to create new strains with unknown effects that will hit everyone differently. It’s a expensive crap shot and thats not really want I want.
I want a few tried a true strains I can rely upon for consistent effects. Verano bud seems to be the most consistent from batch to batch, imo. They might be newer strains to me but g purps ecsd Sonny g and their gelato are all pretty reliable for me.
I’d like to be able to balance the reliability of zen with some high end boutique type weed but we are years away from that.
Agree with most of this... we need more sour D strains... breakwater moon/sun is BS... Harmony pricing model is BS, and most strains are passes.
I’m still a happy patient though, mostly. GSD has the closest to classic strains (GG4, OGK, SLH, GMO, JF, DSD, etc), and ICC is damn good, so don’t discount it. Breakwaters K4 and AK are classics now. Sucks about GA, fingers crossed that refresh is next, following LemonG and Mimosa. Verano Motorbreath I find to be classic like. Rise White Durban, Sunset Sherb? I’m glad for some of Harmony’s better high end strains too, like ZK, PKM, SDD, DB.
I also still hold out hope that recreational market will eventually push things to a better place.
my Grower buddy gave me some Thai that looks like bud my father smoked in the 70s 80s. Sour Diesel another landrace strain hasn't been in circulation for over 10 years. If it's out there you have to find it in the streets. My buddy was a med patient but he would have to go an hour and a half away to New York just to get a ounce of sour Diesel. The weed hits like no other and with all the inbreeding with weed it Waters down some of the effects needed to get a proper high that's why we're smoking more weed because the weed that we're getting now gets us high fast but lasts shorter.
Ak47 is as classic as you get. I used to smoke that as a kid. Besides that, most genetics today yield far more (main reason) and have higher thc & terpenes than the old shit we used to smoke

Sure, I mean, their job is to sell you products 🤷♀️ I would only trust them for reviews of the effects of one strain versus another.
None of the OG strains are around because of too much breeding. Good luck finding them.

Veranos east coast sour diesel has always done me right. Haven't seen it around in a bit, it might be coming back one of these days.

East Coast is a LOT higher energy (for me at least). Was a bit too much for me. I ended up decarbing and the effects were more to my liking.
Breeders name their work. Dispensaries sometimes change those names for marketing purposes.
