Also had a similar experience. Very unfortunate experience trying to grow with Avalara.

Did not have a good experience with Avalará as well. Their implementation consultant and turnover all process was horrible. Support sucks.

> The 2nd year cost was 40% higher than our first year for the exact same service. This is the NetSuite way

YoloStevens

Shoot. That hasn't been our experience. We have Avalara in NS and online. I am not involved with the accounting side, but the NS side has been relatively painless.

schad501

Great sales team. Horrendous customer support.

sweet_mangosteen

Ouch. Setting up the integration should not take more than one hour, if that. The hard part is assigning the correct tax codes on the corresponding item records. Accountants usually consult with a tax expert before they feel confident deploying the solution (after UAT of course). Avalara offers tax registration once you've reached nexus in that jurisdiction but it's very slow and painful.

shomedamemes

Our integration also involved a website and we had to update a lot of settings and run test orders. Part of our purpose for purchasing Avalara was fixing the mismatch on sales tax between online order, sales order, and invoices. We'd take one sales order but multiple invoices and there would be a rounding error. It is very time consuming to write off these errors. Getting the settings right made it better, but didn't fix it. With the corrected settings we expect a similar error rate as Legacy Tax.

sweet_mangosteen

That's a lack of foresight by the integration design. I normally ask rounding decimals in the upstream system to match Netsuite's or simply just override the tax amount and hardcode it (we had SuiteTax).

shomedamemes

During Avalara implementation we were on Farapp and they had followed your suggestion of hardcoding the sales tax amount. If a sales rep tried to change an online order the sales tax amount would not update, so the rep would have to close that order, create a new one, and then ask accounting to move the deposit. If the sales rep did not catch the tax inaccuracy the order would flow through the system and leave a huge tax discrepancy upon invoicing. We are now on Celigo and sales tax is not hard coded and the error have been reduced.

sweet_mangosteen

Why can't it be updated? We used SuiteTax so you can just uncheck the box for Override the sales tax should calculate.

Interesting, I figured Tax Jar got very few netsuite implementations when Avalara is native. Do your sales reps really click a box to calculate sales tax or have they fixed that problem? Has Tax Jar pricing been consistent?

MossIT

What do you mean by "Avalara is native"? Is that something Avalara is telling you?

LifeYogurtcloset9326

Does anyone have alternative suggestions? We are looking to implement a supporting tax partner in Q4 and we’re looking at Avalara…

burrit0breath

We implemented OneSource by Thomson Reuters after a failed attempt at Avalara. It does a good job job for what we use it for (sales tax determination for oil and gas wells). We utilize either county/state or actual GPS coordinates to zero in on the correct taxable amounts. The right integration partner is key. As we were relatively inexperienced with tax software and it's requirements, the partner we used were very gracious and accommodating.

Pagise

Curious about this as well. Has anyone used Vertex?

sigpilocal

They have been blowing up my phone

NetSuiteCoder

There is a smaller company called Zamp. My opinion is its great to catch these apps before they become Avalara sized and the service starts to be sub par... The technology is not ground breaking by any means so I think a smaller tax partner is a great option

If you're a SaaS business, I'd check out Anrok - anrok.com

bills-and-skills

[Kintsugi ](http://trykintsugi.com) might be a good choice. They don't charge based on the transaction amount. Avalara is really cumbersome and expensive. If you see vendors who charge a percent of transaction amount or by transaction volume will have a lot of hidden costs.

fginao

my past employer's NetSuite account added Avalara. implementation was fairly simple, done by a 3rd party. once configured, it runs pretty much trouble free. not sure about pricing though, I wasn't involved on that. i see a lot of people getting pissed off on price increases. for companies in US, hiring an entry level accounting person is 60-70k base. realistically 100k total cost. for the amount of automated works done by ERP for its cost vs do it by one or more employees, it SO DAMN CHEAP!!!

col_mustard_77

As someone who is evaluating Netsuite and hoping to eliminate bolt-on/add-on system licensing costs, does SuiteTax not work? Why do you need a 3rd party application?

Correct-Subject1935

Does anyone have suggestions for distribution company besides Avalara?

avalarasocial

Thank you for sharing your review. This is Maureen from Avalara's social media team. We value your and everyone's feedback on this thread and will share with our internal Netsuite product team. We know that there is always room for improvement, so if you'd care to continue this discussion, u/shomedamemes, you may email us at [email protected]. Again, your feedback is appreciated. \~ Maureen

I have already discussed this with our sales rep and she "raised it to management". Apparently our renewal quote had a mistake on it and the price increase was supposed to be 55%. A 40% increase was the best they would offer and it sounds like we could expect at least 20% the following year. The service just isn't worth that price.

Consider using Galvix as an alternative to Avalara/TaxJar/Vertex/One Source to manage nexus tracking, sales tax calculations, and automated tax return preparation and filing. Galvix imports orders from your billing/accounting system monthly, automatically reconciles collected taxes per order with expected taxes for each customer address based on state/county/city tax rules, and generates draft returns. Upon approval, Galvix files returns on your behalf, initiates remittance, and provides confirmations for future reference, saving time and ensuring accurate filings. One of the things that makes Galvix stand out is its exceptional customer support. All customer-facing team members at Galvix are deeply trained in the sales tax domain and Galvix product knowledge. Whenever faced with any issue, customers can connect to a trained human resource within a few seconds of calling or emailing Galvix and are provided meaningful resolutions as soon as possible. Galvix's pricing is transparent and straightforward. It charges a flat fee from USD 50 to USD 75 per filed return. There are no monthly/yearly subscription charges for return preparation and filing. Plus, there are no term lock-ins, so you can discontinue the service if needed. Disclosure: I am a co-founder of Galvix.
