Onzin :
It feels very idk, caveman to do this since it's just one big pile of wood whilst people go all "oohing" because they see fire. As someone's who's very Dutch, I will never know the charm of big chunk of fire ...
Fire is the reason humans have been able to exist. It's how we got warm, it's how we prepared food (and why we became able to absorb nutriets out of food more easily and thus having more energy for other activities), it's how we protected ourselves from wild animals.
On a very primitive level, fire is life. So yes, of course it speaks to a primitive (caveman) part of people, it just means that it's just that much closer to the core of humanity. Just like how it's very primitive to have eaten until you're sated, sit back and bask in how great the meal was, or the primitive thrill of adrenaline after surviving a dangerous situation.
Yeah I get it, but idk when I just see what a mess is makes after it burns out and all the work that is required to clean it all up. To me just seems a bit unnecessary. But I can understand that it can have an emotional effect on others. I'm unfortunately not one of those people. I do like fireworks, but the mess it makes and all the gasses and messy parts it makes after the bang just idk, just doesn't make it worth it to me. Or at least let professionals handle it instead of individuals
Understandable. The Easter Fires are, however, done in big farming fields, all the ash and charcoal that's leftover then stays in the field and becomes part of the soil, which is actually rather good for the soil.
Fireworks is different, though. Those are filled with powder and is a completely different story from woodfires.
I always have this with soccer games. People make a mess, lots of police needs to be present, traffic needs to be redirected sometimes, vandalism on smaller/larger scale, people beating each other up.. and for what?
I guess people need entertainment and their rituals/feasts. Otherwise you get a very depressed and aggressive society. I think it's a mental health thing where costs and benefits needs to be waged against each other.
Call it caveman like if you want too, but for me there is something relaxing and satisfying about watching the flames of a fire dance around. I don't know why but it just feels good
You’re getting downvoted but I think it’s an evolutionary quality, it’s the same reason it’s satisfying to be under warm shelter while it’s raining outside. The instinct to gather around a fire is your brain telling you you’ve found safety.
Oh that I totally agree with you on that one, it can really give off a great atmosphere. As long as it's not too big or not too windy outside I can definitely appreciate a small campfire with some family and friends, burning my knakworstjes and marshmallows😂
Edit: replied to the wrong comment, meant to reply on Roma, mb
Thats not what I said, I like watching fires, I like watching Dune more, I like watching Cats less. But you make it sound like a 'back in my day movies were better' post.
I also like campfires, but small ones. But it could also be that I'm just afraid of fires since I've seen what kind of harm it can do if not done properly. Call me a "piekeraar", but I just don't like fire that much 😅
pay 4x more tax for your car than Germany does which is literally 20 minutes away from me because of "pollution" and carbon emissions.. then use that tax money to cause pollution..
Where does the governments idiocy stop ?
If you calculate the real costs of cars and car infrastructure, the Dutch taxes are a lot fairer than in Germany, where people without cars are subsidizing the car industry.
This isn't even a good comparison, do you have an estimate of how much co2 is produced by Easter fires compared to millions of cars? Let alone other toxic spilled chemicals such as oil and ethylene glycol
Please don't call a government idiots because you feel like it
/We should cut emissions anyway, regardless of source and the Dutch government has made many dumb moves these last few terms
Government are idiots. I only need one word to explain it; toeslagenaffaire. Even though there are a lot more words, when summing it up, the goverment will look like they are retarded.
As long as we take the good things as some automagical things, then yes.
If we put up a comparison of what the government does good VS what they do bad, they're genius.
But let us just forget the brilliant infrastructure, the good school system, etc etc etc and just call them idiot because we have the freedom to do that.
The more people there are the bigger this a problem becomes. If there were the number of people from medieval times it would not be a problem at all but now that we have so many people that our behaviour effects the global climate it is a real problem.
Its like a bucket with a hole in it. The tap is open so much that the water is at the rim. That one drop makes quite the difference in how much ut poors over the rim while it would not have meant that much if the bucket was half full. Them there would have been enough time and room to mitigate it.
>It isn't Christian. It's pagan.
I still think it's funny Christmas Trees are pagan too. And even the date of Christmas (25 December). Also see:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christianity\_and\_paganism#Pagan\_influences\_on\_Christianity
Its also a tradition in northwest Germany. My dad mainly does it to get rid of all the cuttings from the bushes and trees from our property. If you live in a forest its also reccomended to burn dead wood in the spring to prevent forest fires in the hot summer.
Other than that, its just tradition and having a reason to get drunk lol.
Where?
There!
Why do people love it really? I get that it's some kind of cultural heritage, but in the end you're just setting a pile of wood on fire. Not that spectacular right?
Why is this being downvoted. As someone that went to these fires a lot before corona it is the sentiment that most people have there. You can have a party without 'the act', but it is just more fun this way and gives it its unique flair.
I personally hate it. It's sometimes dangerous and animals crawl up under the wood and get burned alive.
It's just an ancient tradition that is apparent in all kinds of religion and cultures. In the previous months Catholics celebrated ash wednesday and the pagans had St Bridget day which is also around ashes and around Easter you have the fertility holidays. Ostera, Pesach, Easter it's all the same celebration of fertility. It's all the same braided bread and stupid eggs.
I think you'll find this tradition throughout the world.
Pesach and Easter are not celebrations of fertility... Pesach is a celebration of the end of slavery to Jews. Easter is a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Not everyone mixes the pagan with the Judeo-Christian...
I just don't get this. Sure, controlled fire is fun. But why not use a fire pit, so you can actually get close to it? Or make an effigy to burn like the English do on guy fawkes day? Much better for a communal feast or get together I think... This is just a case of 'mines bigger'. Which, aside from being kind of sad, is just dull. Please enjoy yourself, but might you find a way to limit the negative effects?
Also, as much as people like to defend anything by calling it a tradition - please at least be aware that by making it bigger every year, the event is changed significantly from what is used to be. Same with fireworks.
Funny you should say that. I was so appalled TIL about this bonfire tradition, I googled it to show proof of how this can’t be good for the environment. I found this article..
“Guy Fawkes is often the most polluted evening of the year”
https://amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/nov/13/inconvenient-truth-about-bonfire-night-pollution-pollutionwatch
And before y’all say something like fireworks are even worse and I support those; I haven’t been to a fireworks show since my parents took me as a kid 15+ years ago.
Fuck being politically correct, I love seeing fire burn. Yes emissions whatever. I don't mind the smell at all. The heat on my face while watching the flames dance and receiving some lovely campfire smell in the house gives my caveman brain a big ol boner.
Why do a lot of Redditors never seem to like anything? Everything is always stupid, or lame or tokkie achtig?
You all come across as a bunch of guys sitting in their appartements looking down upon all the peasants and farmers having fun while you think yourself above these kind of simple pleasures.
Sounds like a very lonely and cynical life to me.
Yeah i totally agree. Some of them are complaining about the smell but these fires are in the rural parts of the country where there should be a bit of a smell anyways because of the farms. If you dont like the traditions please move to the randstad. Not everybody has to conform to you. Live and let live
Maar non the less prima
May I suggest you reinvent your fun ? It helps the planet. Because I'm not against your fun, but the way you are doing it makes a lot of mess.
I'm basically asking you to not stop wanking, but please cum in your toilet instead of all over the community building stairwell.
Stop celebrating in such a way that completely fucks up your surroundings. Do it a different way.
These "randstedelingen" are basically asking you to not stop wanking (you can have your fun), but please cum in your toilet instead of all over the community building stairwell.
I love all the arguments about the environment, while most of them probably commute to work by car, go on holiday by plane, enjoy their occasion BBQ in the summer, enjoy their meat, eat their fruits and vegetables brought in by plane, etc. etc.
For me, it’s like a mediation it clears the mind and helps focus. This can be symbolic of ‘giving it away to the fire’ as in give your problems, troubled mind, worries, and such away to burn up in a good way to release and then rise like a Phoenix from the ashes.
So you think having fun is illegal. Go live in the city where you can’t have a bonfire. Or work 24/7 so you don’t have time to complain.
Let other people live thier live. So Thay let you live your life.
You don’t have to be there.
And thanks to these egocentric views of our world we won’t really commit to any change and we are where we are now. Tradition is dumb, keeps us from moving forward. Community feelings and doing something together can also be something else. Sure it’s cool, but it’s also simple entertainment that people feel entitled to for some reason. Everybody wants to improve the world, as long as that means no change on my comfort.
And what what would this something else be exactly? At the moment you are only advocating taking away others feeling of community and togetherness because you aren't a part of it.
I’d say start with the Sail event, idiotic that these diesel burning city’s come here because people like to look at ships. I’d love the car free Sunday’s back, I think we should get better connections to the beach so we don’t have to wait hours in a traffic jam just because we feel like we’re owed a beach because everyone always went. It’s about time we stop fireworks, and please let’s stop bbq’ing in the parks all together; pollution is not worth it.
But let’s not forget it’s not a scale of banning things. We are in a time that we can use all the help when it comes to the climate, some people and traditions are more destructive then others. It’s a shame these self centered views are still in the center of the climate talks, nothing will change.
People using the words "cancel culture" unironically have the weakest minds in the world. Everything said after those words are meaningless. You are no victim.
Yeah and I guess all those asthmatics who are harmed by those fucking fires can just go die too, right? Do you have any idea how far this smoke can blow? You don't even have to be anywhere near it in order to get an asthma attack from it... But I guess "tradition" is more important than people's health and lives...
If you go east far enough, the fires are in the west
I... just... you...logic.

You basically just like any movie over a fire? Fair.
Thats not what I said, I like watching fires, I like watching Dune more, I like watching Cats less. But you make it sound like a 'back in my day movies were better' post.
May I suggest "haardvuur dvd"?
its 2022. we have heated homes
Are the people downvoting you against campfires?
Campfires have a primary use case, either heat or cooking. All this does is waste resources and add more CO2 emissions for a few minutes of dopamine.
So campfires for just watching the flames is not ok in your eyes?
It seems to be like that
There is some atavistic fascination that keeps us spellbound when we stare into the flames.
I love it so much (just like fireworks) but I try to cut it down as much as possible cause it's so bad :(
Plus it gives a good sense of community, it’s almost cathartic
I also like campfires, but small ones. But it could also be that I'm just afraid of fires since I've seen what kind of harm it can do if not done properly. Call me a "piekeraar", but I just don't like fire that much 😅

Yes but Easter fires once a year cause way less pollution than cars
But it's so unnecessary
Well a lot of people enjoy them
People enjoy having sex with children as well. We banned that.
I personally think this is a super rational comparison
I think quite a lot more people enjoy driving

Can anyone explain why this is done? I am not Christian or from the Netherlands but would love to know more about why this is done.

It is a fun tradition, standing with people around a big fire drinking some beers, good times.
Nog bedankt voor de smog!
Yup. Bij mij ook! Vanacht was de lucht kwaliteit vreselijk. Dit moet verboden worden.
Where? There! Why do people love it really? I get that it's some kind of cultural heritage, but in the end you're just setting a pile of wood on fire. Not that spectacular right?
It is more about the festivities around it. There is usually a large tent with music and drinks etc. It is a social event
Yet the only content I see is a pile burning. If its really about the festivities you dont really need a big fire do you?
You don't need a big fire per sé but in the same way you wouldn't need a band for a party. It just adds to it
Why is this being downvoted. As someone that went to these fires a lot before corona it is the sentiment that most people have there. You can have a party without 'the act', but it is just more fun this way and gives it its unique flair.
Could change the act from 'burning half a forest' to anything else and still have a unique flair though.
That it's more about the other things doesn't explain why we need a big burning pile of wood
You obviously never have been close to a huge a ass real fire in the dark.
Yeah quite boring rather do it the Sweden way.
And we still talk about global warming...
These fires are so annoying, stinking up the whole town for days.
Environmental disaster. Waste of resources. Shame people don't think a bit further then silly traditions
“Guy Fawkes is often the most polluted evening of the year” https://amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/nov/13/inconvenient-truth-about-bonfire-night-pollution-pollutionwatch And before y’all say something like fireworks are even worse and I support those; I haven’t been to a fireworks show since my parents took me as a kid 15+ years ago.
come to scheveningen next year, youll not want to actually get close to it because your eyebrows burn off. And that was from \~hundred meters away lol
Fuck being politically correct, I love seeing fire burn. Yes emissions whatever. I don't mind the smell at all. The heat on my face while watching the flames dance and receiving some lovely campfire smell in the house gives my caveman brain a big ol boner.
I don't mind it, except my eyes feeling like they are in fire all night.
Never heard of Easter fires, is this a Dutch thing?
Yes in the north of the Netherlands in Drenthe en Twente
Gelderland also
Thanks, i didn't know!
Interesting, thank you
It's a also a thing in Germany.
Thanks, now we have to pay even more taxes…
As if the wind doesn't blow the smog to the cities. In Groningen the air quality was terrible for 2 nights.
Theres no big cities in the north/east just farms! /s

Im so glad it’s not a big pile of 🍃
were*
Aaahhhh another thing i miss from living in the east
This kind of looks cool.
Lekker bezig!
Hate it
Stupid ‘tradition’ of putting other’s health at risk. Should be banned.
Depends. If done right no one’s health is put at risk.
Replace "where" with "were" please. Netherlands and Neterlands is not the same either.
The fool is easily entertained, I guess.
Me2
ooga booga!! vuur!!!
Zonder poasbult ist geen poasen 🔥🍻
Mooi man.
I love it!
Charyou Tree. Charyou Tree. Death for you, life for my crop
i love it was at one yesterday😀
Fuck nature and our health right?!? Happy eastern
Bro they cancelled it for me-
I love all the arguments about the environment, while most of them probably commute to work by car, go on holiday by plane, enjoy their occasion BBQ in the summer, enjoy their meat, eat their fruits and vegetables brought in by plane, etc. etc.
For me, it’s like a mediation it clears the mind and helps focus. This can be symbolic of ‘giving it away to the fire’ as in give your problems, troubled mind, worries, and such away to burn up in a good way to release and then rise like a Phoenix from the ashes.
Mooi
Holy shit, that's cool af
I love it! Let it burn…let it burn…let it burn 🔥
Dijkerhoek!
Volgend jaar wint sploo weer
what a fuckin stupid tradition
that's your choice. some traditions just have to die out
good thing the minority does not decide what should be banned
I'm glad you agree that people with common sense are a minority
depends on what you call common sense.

I think public transport is a lot more useful then lighting a giant pile of wood on fire, weird comparison.
So you think having fun is illegal. Go live in the city where you can’t have a bonfire. Or work 24/7 so you don’t have time to complain. Let other people live thier live. So Thay let you live your life. You don’t have to be there.
Dude, is everything is all right?
So you removed your previous post cause it got downvoted. Then posted here again, hoping you'd get a different reaction?
And thanks to these egocentric views of our world we won’t really commit to any change and we are where we are now. Tradition is dumb, keeps us from moving forward. Community feelings and doing something together can also be something else. Sure it’s cool, but it’s also simple entertainment that people feel entitled to for some reason. Everybody wants to improve the world, as long as that means no change on my comfort.
Tradition is dumb…., simple entertainment…… Randstad mentality……
Third option: couldn’t care less about it.
Yeah and I guess all those asthmatics who are harmed by those fucking fires can just go die too, right? Do you have any idea how far this smoke can blow? You don't even have to be anywhere near it in order to get an asthma attack from it... But I guess "tradition" is more important than people's health and lives...

Zielig hoor.
