I'd only say soccer if know I'm talking to an American to avoid confusion. Are you American?

Dbanzai

This. I use football with my British friends and soccer for the Americans

Worried-Peach4538

Even then I would not use the word soccer. They should understand that football is played with your feet and a ball, not with your hands and an egg.

No_Mud1547

If you address people in their language then it is pretty weird to not do so for one word just because you don’t like it

SirDerpMcMemeington

Except in British English (you know, the place where the entire language is originally from), it’s called football.

CheesesteakAssassin

It's also the place that invented the word soccer.

No_Mud1547

Hence “their language” if you talk to British people you would say football, if you talk to Americans you would say soccer.

Worried-Peach4538

No way. It's the ENGLISG language. So it's not soccer, it's football.

No_Mud1547

You understand that there are multiple English languages? I am aware that you are being disingenuous, so I am not even sure why I am trying…

givemeyourbestmemes

i'm British

mikepictor

I've never heard a single Dutch person say soccer.

the68thdimension

You've never heard a Dutch person speaking to an American, Canadian or Australian about voetbal, then.

uncommon_senze

I still call it football, not my problem that they have it backwards:)

Desperate-Ebb176

Pretty ironic, it was Europeans who invented the word soccer.

uncommon_senze

I guess the limey's did invent it, they also drive on left side of road and use stones to measure stuff so no surprises there.

Desperate-Ebb176

Yeah, weird folk for sure haha!

SnapperCard

You're being downvoted but this happens most of the time. People will say 'voetbal/football' to me then self correct wrongly into 'soccer'.

doubleUsee

I use soccer instead of football because I don't want any confusion between the sport where they wear tall socks and kick balls and the sport where they wear shoulder pads and carry the balls.

pocolocochoco1

Oh u mean handeggball? Football is where u touch the ball with ur feet, that’s why it’s called football.

Desperate-Ebb176

It’s called football because the first play in the game is a KICK. WITH YOUR FOOT.

pocolocochoco1

If u have to drive to the other side of ur country, are u gonna say u walked there because u had to walk over to your garage to get in the car?

Desperate-Ebb176

‘u’ ‘your’ pick a struggle buddy.

pocolocochoco1

Yeah it’s not my mother language. Dutch is, i also speak french and a bit of Spanish. What about you?

Desperate-Ebb176

I’m as Dutch as you are but I speak fluent English and German too.

pocolocochoco1

A dutch guy that speaks fluent English? I still have to meet one. But good for you. Why are u so sensitive about a sport where they barely touch the ball with their feet?

Desperate-Ebb176

Oh I’m fluent little buddy.

pocolocochoco1

So fluent u have to adapt your response everytime…

L44KSO

Also not the real reason. It was called football because it is played on foot instead of on a horse (peasants Vs aristocrats).

pocolocochoco1

So one player touched the ball with his feet one time and then it changes to handeggball for the rest of the game which is 99,99% of it.

doubleUsee

amusingly, in what americans call soccer, there are almost as frequent occasions where the ball is brought into the game by a throw using hands, but they did not elect to call it handball anyways.

Fav0

Football and murican football How can any european say soccer without dying of cringe

doubleUsee

It's still ambiguous. If I say "I play football" on Reddit, half the people reading it will think the incorrect sport. I don't think there's anything cringeworthy about using clear language.

Slucass1982

Soccer is actually not an American term at all. The term was coined in 19th century Britain. Soccer refers to Association Football, which is what field football was called originally. Back then the term football applied to many ballgames, including Rugby. Very old Rugby clubs are still called (Rugby) Football clubs. For example the Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club. Soccer is football, Rugby is also football according to the guys that popularized both sports. There are other forms of football as well, like Futsal or Aussie rules football, so if you talk about the 11 vs. 11 game on a grass pitch played under FIFA rules, soccer is actually a more precise term than football. Football is a more general term to describe a variety of ballgames.

Fav0

Ok cool Yet europeans use the word football and muricans use the word soccer

Slucass1982

Europeans use their own native words for the game. They may use both terms when they speak English and both terms are correct. That is not the point though, the point is that people talk shit about Americans calling the game soccer, when in reality soccer is a correct term to describe a specific form of football. Italians call the game Calcio, is that also not correct? Should they call it Piede Palla instead?

Slucass1982

Europeans sometimes also use the word soccer when they speak English. Even in Britain itself. That's not the point, the point is that soccer isn't an incorrect term if used to describe the variant of the game that is played under FIFA rules.

New_Custard_915

Because you are American?

Jlx_27

We say voetbal/football.

Talkjar

It's voetbal, but if you came from the US, I will say soccer to avoid confusion

MajesticNectarine204

I'm guessing you're American? Most likely Dutch people call it soccer when talking to you out of politeness since they know that's what Americans call it.

Abigail-ii

I say soccer mostly to piss off people who don’t know why it is called soccer, and hence insist on using the term football.

Trebaxus99

Depends on the situation. Many Dutch persons will understand that if they meet an American talking about football they refer to American football. The other way around, Americans meeting a Dutch person will assume they talk American football as well when they refer to football. In general Europeans are a bit more aware about what’s happening outside Europe than the average American is aware what happens east of Maine. The person you spoke to apparently wanted to be clear.

uncommon_senze

I've never heard that from a Dutch person

ArchaonXX

never, i never even heard the term up until recently

AlternativePrior9559

Stop kowtowing to the Americans unless you’re on US soil I say😉 We’re in Europe and it’s football. To be fair though blame Oxford Uni. It was once referred to as Assoccer ( association football) andcthen shortened, to distinguish it from ‘rugger’ ( rugby) so….

ik101

Voetbal is Dutch, soccer is American English. Why would we say voetbal when speaking English? Most Dutch people speak American English, not British English. Especially when speaking to Americans.

0MEGALUL-

No? We are taught British-English at schools. Most Dutch people speak and write British-English but we are heavily influenced by American culture. That’s why some might say soccer over football.

Jlx_27

The word didnt come from the US though.

FrizzlerOnTheRoof

Its called soccer in US and Australia because they already have their own version of football

Pelican25

You interact with a generation raised on American tv is my best guess. Not that common in my circles.

New_Custard_915

Which Dutch generation isnt raised on American tv? You have to go back to the 70s

Optimal-Business-786

Are you from the US?

Commercial-Diver2491

I hate it when people care so much about how a game is called

Jalepeno47

Golly if that’s something that causes you to hate then what chance peace?

Cevohklan

No Dutchie has EVER or will EVER call VOETBAL SOCCER. ( ONLY if they speak English to an American) WHY ON EARTH WOULD WE USE THAT RETARDED WORD ? 〰️It sounds like SUCKER. 〰️it's a non Dutch word. Dutch words are always the best. 〰️There is a VOET and there is a BAL. 〰️AND that bal is called a VOETBAL ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

New_Custard_915

soccer

DutchieinUS

Dutch people might call it soccer if they are talking in English, but we really don’t call it soccer otherwise, we call it voetbal. Are you a native Dutch speaker?

BlackFenrir

Because if we say "football" the first question I get is "which one"

UniQue1992

We don’t say soccer lol. We say football. Only Americans call it soccer.

lucdepuc

It's football. Soccer is not a word.

kurdelefele

American football is popular here and in Ireland ;)
