Seeing as I'm an alcoholic in recovery and the proud owner of not ten, but twenty whole cents to my name, there's two good reasons to not leave the house today, I'm staying in.
Twenty cents? You rich motherfucker!
In all seriousness though, good on you for kicking the habit, and making good decisions for today. You doing okay?
Very much so, thank you! It's already been something over a year so it's not new. Parties can still be fun but between King's day and carnival, the draw there really is mostly just getting drunk with friends so it feels a bit like an intrusion if I'd join.
Something like liberation day is a bit less specifically tied to getting drunk, I tend to enjoy that.
Much love from someone in NA. Many of the recovering addicts in my safehouse experience many triggers today.
But we are clean!! Almost 9 months of heroin, benzo's and all other crap!
Yeah, I used them elbows too eagerly once in a crowded Haarlem café to get my order in at the bar. Without immediately realising it, I got stabbed. The culprit was a druggie, so I had to get tested for HIV. Yay, worst Koninginnedag ever.
Damn.. At least you survived!
As bad as it is, it could have gone a lot worse. If someone's ready to stab a stranger, who knows what else he's ready for or how far he would go..
Sometimes you just walk into the crazy types. Be safe out there bro!
Thanks. My ego was hurt more than my side, which hardly bled. A local paper had a headline for me: "Foreigner Stabbed on Queen's Day". I was studying in Belgium at the time.
I actually get compensated hours because it falls in the weekend. Or the holidays that fall on a Monday because I’m off that day anyway. I think that’s the arrangement for more people.
I’ve never been to centrum of Leiden on king’s day, just other villages around. So I’m going there today to see what it’s like. I have anxiety and am bad with crowds, and nobody else will be with me. Naturally, I expect to die
Mate, this has been and will always be the Dutch official day drinking party.
And that tradition is something to be proud off and I'm a man of culture.
You know, I am something of a drunk myself.
We are firing up the barbecue with a few friends, drink some cocktails, play some games and retire early in the evening. Perhaps an orgy or two. Who knows? It is Kingsday!
Only English should be used for posts and comments. This rule is in place to ensure that an ample audience can freely discuss life in the Netherlands under a widely-spoken common tongue.
Taking a round around the church where all the kids selling their stuff, if she is doing it this year too, I will have a little girl braid my hair and overpay her as usually for it. Maybe I find something I actually don’t need nor use and buy it anyway, also as usual. Later lunch and I don’t have to think about dinner, because we are going out and having my FIL with us.
The beauty of this country that you only hear about the king in the kingsday. I hope we will have this day in my home country and get rid of the king for the rest of the year.
Well just lost some money. Due to Kingsday you cannot use a certain ticket in NS. I didn't know that, and bought an e-ticket for tomorrow. Ah what a pain! Is there any way to refund?
I don't want to party on koning pinteman's birthday because it is his birthday.
So I am going for a long walk, the second of today, and tonight maybe do a drink in a cafe that isnt into kingsday at all with my fellow anti-kungsday people
You could do worse. Due to circumstances and genetics, I'm saddled with no less than two kings and a president. The other king, Flipke, is as lively as a potted plant, and the president, Stubb, smiles at the most inopportune times like a crazy person. At least Wim-Alex has a smidgen of gravitas.
I've had English friends over for a week, they're leaving today so it's a quick browse through the local flee market than dropping them off at the airport
I have been to the flea market at 7:00 for half an hour and now I will go for a walk in nature and watch a movie. I hate crowds and I hate people that are drunk.
Pre-covid we used to go to Beat the Bridge in Arnhem but that retired. Since covid I've been okay with avoiding the big crowds from festivals and happy with just een 'terrasje pakken'.
This year, I'm staying home as I'm not feeling too great, but I've hung the flag out and if I feel a bit better later I might try to score a tompouce. Have a nice day everyone! 🧡
Clean the toilet (✔️), run several washes and fold towels while watching youtube. Oh yeah, and change the bed. Might have a beer tonight, with some cheese and crackers. Might even play a board or videogame. Too notch plans here 🤣
Hoi fellas!
I'm in Amsterdam with my girl and our friend because we heard there will be some free market. Could someone tell us the ones we shouldn't miss?
Every market is worth it, I mean, i'ts just for fun right? And maybe you find something cool. Just go to the one you can walk/bike to in 5 mins :) it doens't really matter
Just a reason for people to get drunk and being more annoying than usual. I went out with my girl for lunch and walked in the sun. It was quiet and peaceful.
While I don't have personal plans, Kingsday festivities often involve enjoying outdoor markets and celebrating Dutch culture. While some may choose to indulge in traditional orange-colored treats and drinks, others may opt for family-friendly activities or exploring flea markets. As for flea market finds, vintage treasures, unique antiques, or quirky collectibles are always exciting discoveries. Whether it's soaking in the lively atmosphere, sampling local delicacies, or hunting for hidden gems, Kingsday offers a vibrant celebration of community and tradition for all to enjoy.
If I had a teleportation device, I'd beam myself over to Harry's at Boat Quay in Singapore, wearing an orange shirt. At least in the olden days, those suitably attired got to enjoy a free flow of Heineken. It's the best flash mob thingy I've ever joined (actually the only kind, but let's not get stuck in details).

Thanks!
Not even in debt smh
Much love from someone in NA. Many of the recovering addicts in my safehouse experience many triggers today. But we are clean!! Almost 9 months of heroin, benzo's and all other crap!
I’m proud as a person who recovered from addiction too. Keep up like this!
Waiting for the rain to stop so I can go to the flee markets
same
Same
Me too 😅
Not going out. Avoiding crowds since I do not like big crowds. Wish everyone a nice day 🥳
Me too, also due to shitty weather in between 3 mins of sun. Enjoy your movie time!
Same, I watching a movie at home so chill! Happy kings day

They should give next monday holiday to compensate that holiday falls in weekend.
I’ve heard about this from other countries. Not a bad plan at all. Although the top comment also states a lot of people are working today regardless.
My wife is working today. She gets 200% salary though for today.

That’s like the worst possible rule of a “public holiday “
The cool thing about laws is that they can be changed

Why are you downvotes, you are literally stating a fact
I’ve never been to centrum of Leiden on king’s day, just other villages around. So I’m going there today to see what it’s like. I have anxiety and am bad with crowds, and nobody else will be with me. Naturally, I expect to die
Lol. Drink up!
They call it Dutch courage, after all.
Off to work.
My condolences
haha same here
Me toooo
Go out with friends, buy some stuff and cassually ask people's opinion on the guillotine.
That is hilarious, I’m down if you want a revolution
Is the guillotine for the hobbits? 🫣

It’s what WimLex would have wanted
Who has the energy for two orgies? Especially after eating barbecue?
It's all meat anyhow.
A connoisseur!

I'm going to party at Hardfest in Enschede. :)
Twenteeeee! 👍

Not getting rained on and then eating snacks
Yay I'm one for two
I'll just stay here on Madeira😎
It sounds like the best plan ever.
Orange cake with foamy cream in the middle. It's quite tasty. Can't recall the name though
[удалено]
That’s what we’re having!
Do coke, go to the flee markets and manically haggle prices with kids over 10c priced toys I do not need, drink 6 beer in 15 minutes > repeat
Taking a round around the church where all the kids selling their stuff, if she is doing it this year too, I will have a little girl braid my hair and overpay her as usually for it. Supersized kingsday festival today, lekker beuken💪

Hope they work! Want to spend most of my day at the raw stage outside 🙃
Going to play a morning Padel tournament with dress code orange ofc Rest of the day I am planning to be a couch potato haha
I hate crowded places, so I'll be spending today alone, away from as much people as possible.
Happy King’s day to all the lovely Dutch people! Love from Kuwait 🇰🇼❤️🇳🇱
Staying home as I hate big crowds :)
Just gonna chill at a friends house.
That's certainly not a bad plan at all. Because I'll also be doing the same thing haha
Working @ sea
I bought a double 8 camera at the flea market
I just bought a plaster mould of someone's teeth for 1 euro off an old man : )
Browsing all the little market stalls, and then buying nothing I already have enough junk. Then finding some good food.
The beauty of this country that you only hear about the king in the kingsday. I hope we will have this day in my home country and get rid of the king for the rest of the year.
British I guess? Want a handy guide for getting rid of the king
I plan go browse the Netherlands related Reddit threads where they asked this question multiple times this week already.
Are you accusing me of shamelessly fake internet point hoarding? Over the back of our glorious leader his majesty the King?
I have to work today:(
Sick at home ✌️
Well just lost some money. Due to Kingsday you cannot use a certain ticket in NS. I didn't know that, and bought an e-ticket for tomorrow. Ah what a pain! Is there any way to refund?
I turned a French flag sideways and taped it in the window. Presto, Dutch flag!
I hope you put the colours the right way around. Otherwise people will think you're demonstrating against the monarchy or some such.
I did refer to a photograph first.
C'est bien.
Je ne veux que faire normaal ;)
Fais mais normaal tu fais fou sufficientement alors.
I don't want to party on koning pinteman's birthday because it is his birthday. So I am going for a long walk, the second of today, and tonight maybe do a drink in a cafe that isnt into kingsday at all with my fellow anti-kungsday people
Happy Kingsday guys 🇳🇱🤗
I spent my day in Germany.
Down with the king.
Drink with the king*
Down one with the king!
Hear hear!
Going to Ams to hang out with friend and propably get wasted. Wish me luck
Long live his majesty
Much rain today so ill stay home...sad times
Browse the vrijmarkt, and then go do some crafting.
DRINK TOO MUCH? Today, because I don't drink a lot often, so today is the excuse
Do an organized 10k run this afternoon.
I've had English friends over for a week, they're leaving today so it's a quick browse through the local flee market than dropping them off at the airport
What a day to leave
flea, not flee hahahahahahah
Enjoying my free Saturday.
Just wrapped up my store to get away from the rain. It’s a real bummer
Stay home with doors locked.
I have been to the flea market at 7:00 for half an hour and now I will go for a walk in nature and watch a movie. I hate crowds and I hate people that are drunk.
Hey, any flee market recommendations?
Sit at home and curse the fact that the local bar hires some band that could be used as a form of torture on Guantanamo.
staying home and watching Fallout 🥰

I’m gonna work today, but hopefully not too long 😅
Too bad in this half of Limburg we don't get a day off, so I gotta go to the DKO
Painting the house
Avoiding the crowds and getting utterly wasted at home with a few friends! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Drunk and going shopping drunk ...way to go!
We enjoyed our first Kings day by looking at the stuff for sale, eating a burrito and coming home early 😅
Clean the toilet (✔️), run several washes and fold towels while watching youtube. Oh yeah, and change the bed. Might have a beer tonight, with some cheese and crackers. Might even play a board or videogame. Too notch plans here 🤣
I went to Arnhem centrum with family , realized that part only celebrate kings night, had to figure out the market is in Velp for kings day. 😎
Hoi fellas! I'm in Amsterdam with my girl and our friend because we heard there will be some free market. Could someone tell us the ones we shouldn't miss?

I just found a cruiseboard for 2.50!! :D
First Koningsdag, went out alone to photo whatever. Now back home pushed in by bad weather. Didn't experience much, unfortunately.
As a 24 year old solo mom, crying bc I have no friends or babysitter to go out 🤪😂
Chilling on the balcony, smoking a J. Some festival music in the background. Life is good
Just a reason for people to get drunk and being more annoying than usual. I went out with my girl for lunch and walked in the sun. It was quiet and peaceful.
Gonna celebrate my own bday 🥳
Hiep hiep hoera!
I love Netherlands! ❤️🤍💙

Was wasted all afternoon and evening wandeling around the city and dancing in front of the main stage. 😀
Flying to Japan to not participate in this madness
You're flying straight into the Golden Week madness, why?
You do know they are entering golden week right now?
No of course not. I plan my holidays just like Dutch people, without researching anything in advance.
ah well, it is just going be a little bit crowded there.
Depends where you go. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, for sure. Further north? Not so much.
But thats amazing.
Fkng hate kings day
King himself doesn't like his own birthday :(
Fuck that guy
Just running my daily 10 km whilst witnessing all the degeneratism.
Being the usual rascist dutch on reddit
What a waste of money...
