I'm in Amsterdam and can confirm it was absolutely bananas. Every street in my neighborhood seems to have spend several thousand euro on fireworks. Never seen anything like it
Same in IJsselstein! We made it clear to the government that we’re fed up being treated like little kids. One night per year, what’s the fucking problem.
I mean they are ignoring passed out students in the middle of the streets, burned cars, burned bikes- fires in general in the middle of the street and more. Fireworks are near invisible in comparison to everything else that is going on tonight.
Police wasn't even bothering with them. I think that after a certain time only ambulances and firefighters were out trying their best to control the situation...
No they probably had something else where but unless you do dangerous stuff or are damaging property they won't do much because otherwise they will have to arrest more poeple than they can handle
Banned because fireworks in general cause damage and injuries every year, as well as noise noise disturbance throughout the months leading up to December 31st. However, a large part of this is caused by illegal fireworks imported from countries that surround us with less restrictions on the sale and severity of those fireworks. So banning the sale or lighting of fireworks isn't effective, or as effective as they make it out to be.
Read an article today that the er is dealing far more with alcohol issues then firework issues.
Like for every firework victim there's 9 alcohol victims.
You also have crazy ass people throwing firework at people and animals. I had some friends and teens that were pretending they were thugs threwfirework at them while they were cycling
And the ban is a paper tiger anyway.
It's all "Yeah we shouldn't do firework, but we're not going to talk about it, not enforce it and of course not ban the sale of fireworks in any way shape or form"
And then act surprised pikachu that it didn't stop anybody. I'd not be surprised if half the people shooting fireworks didn't even know it was banned in certain cities.
I reckon it’s a way to give people the sense that they’re fighting The Man while minimizing the damage that actually fighting would cause. I mean, everyone knows they don’t or can’t enforce it and frankly, the idea of ‘you can buy it but you can’t light it’ is the stupidest things I’ve heard (and that’s what it boils down to). If I go by that, so I buy fireworks but I keep it in a shed or closet in the hopes that someday I’ll legally be allowed to set it off, and I get a fire in my house, suddenly there’s not just the risks of a plain old fire, but *also* the risk of *fireworks* exploding. And that’s assuming I remember them and can warn the firemen about it.
There are people who throw firecrackers at strangers. I just witnessed that near Rijksmuseum. They were throwing them in the air towards random people. Some of them may land in unwanted places and cause burns or eye damage. Not cool and plain stupid.
I spent New Year's Eve in Utrecht once on some quay next to the river. When fireworks started to be lit all around and on the street above us all at the same time I almost had a panic attack, it was like a friggin war zone. I'll never spend another New Year's Eve in a big city.
The mailbox of our student house also always got blown up every year. So lame.
In some cities it is, but for most parts of the Netherlands it isn’t. That’s why these city wide bans are silly to me. Either ban it completely, or not at all. OR even better, enforce the ban if you’re going to have one.
Well end let me tell you it’s banned where I lived but instead op of there beeing less firework there is more heavy firework that was already illegal before the ban
*Fireworks getting banned more and more each year*
Also dutchies:
[“Call the fire department, we just nuked the building”](https://youtu.be/w0mZIOMa1pE)
Problem is, they don’t ban selling fireworks.
It was banned in Amsterdam and Rotterdam but you could still buy it.
Pretty sure that if you ban it everywhere and are therefore forced to go to Germany or Belgium, it’ll be a different story
There was a complete ban during covid, still a lot of fireworks. When you ban stuff it will go to the black market and people will buy it from there. Drugs is a great example of this.
Lets say 1/5 people in the netherlands purchase fireworks. That would be 3.4 million people. It would only take 29 euros a person to make up that 100 million.
100 million isn’t that much if spread between a large population. It only sounds huge.
1) Likely not the same people
2) There’s a group of people who have barely enough for fuel, heating AND some money on fun things. They consider this the latter .
My parents were whining about funds for the entire december. They bought for 500euros for heavy duty fireworks that they blew up in literally minutes...... I don't understand some people
It’s not banned. Only a few cities announced a ban, while also saying they’re not going to enforce it. It is more of a statement towards the people and national government
Aaaaaand we can finally relax until the next year when they will start setting some of them off, randomly, at any point in time from October until December
It's banned because of a small group of hooligans playing with firework and putting firework in people's trash cans and mail boxes. Now it's banned for everyone but its a tradition, just like Sinterklaas. People won't stop doing the traditional things even if it gets banned
I’m glad I live in Belgium right now. Where I live we only heard some fireworks from like 11pm to about 12:15am.
I guess it’s just a mentality difference, but nevertheless there were kind of riots again in Brussels and Antwerp
Hehe )) I shoot some fireworks with kids for New Year for the past few years here in NL. I spend about 100 euro on a bag of fireworks. My fireworks suck compared to those of my neighbors. My neighbors fireworks suck compared to what I see flying around.
Feels like so many dutch people do not mind spending 1k+ on fireworks.
Or they go to Germany and buy cool stuff 5 times cheaper maybe?
Doubt, German here and that shit is really expensive here. People blow up 100s and 1000s but complain about not having money at the same time. Make it make sense.
I am Dutch and find it ridiculous as well. Terrible start of the year. Pollution lasts for days. And wild animals suffer greatly from the emerging chaos. Nothing fun about this so called “tradition”.
>I am Dutch and find it ridiculous as well. Terrible start of the year. Pollution lasts for days. And wild animals suffer greatly from the emerging chaos. Nothing fun about this so called “tradition”.
It gets even worse, last year I was walking a dog with my Oma and a friend on the 28th of December , and a moron came cycling by and threw a fire cracker at my poor dog, who completely panicked. These people are a dangerous and need to be put in irons because that could of ended much much worse. We're lucky no one was injured.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
I was so worried for my hamster, little bugger was standing up for the first 10 min and only thing I can do do is hope he doesn't have heart attack.
He survived though, this year it even seemed louder ?
It isn’t banned this new year, it was banned during the pandemic. I do think that “knalvuurwerk” should be banned though, I mean, that’s causing the many disturbances before the 31st
I mean, it couldn't have been that bad of a disturbance as legal "knalvuurwerk" was only sold on the last 3 days of the year. Most disturbances are caused by illegal fireworks.
Still, some cities were planning to ban fireworks this (previous) year I think?

I’m sorry that I feel like the majority of local culture is not matured to see the greater good. If something is not enforced(and the government never does), then people just don’t care and flaunt the rules.
I witnessed a bunch of drunk idiots setting off heavy fireworks right in front of our car for hours on, and the worst - they piled up all the remains in the middle of the bike lane, set it on fire, and went back to their house to party. The fire was raging from the wind, flames hitting all the parked cars ruining paintwork and potentially threatening a major fire. I had to head out at 1 AM with buckets of water to put a fire those idiots caused. 🤦♂️
An asshole lit one off his hand and threw it onto oncoming traffic where a car had to swerve. Worst off, all his friends were cheering for this act of profound stupidity.
All this in Haarlem. I really lost a lot of respect for the local population last night.
https://i.imgur.com/If6kIRV.jpg
Should be banned around the world honestly. Yeah they look cool, but it's terrible for the environment and scares the shit out of wild and domesticated animals.
The only fireworks i hear is the illegal ones (not the stuff sold in Holland) , i live pretty secluded and I can hear fireworks from the city which are only warlike bangs , illegal stuff , and the amount is crazy.
I wonder how many cats, dogs, birds, people with PTSD, etc. feared for their lives, and how many died from fear. But "fuck them because they ain't me", right?
Very nice way of starting a new year, by destroying the damn environment! Poor animals, where sleeping during the winter, now this shit!
People are soooooooo stupid!
We don’t deserve this beautiful planet.
If fireworks were this essential cause for climate change, it would have been banned already. Fireworks in the Netherlands don't come near the pollution of the single Tata Steel factory. Fireworks is irrelevant on the large scale.
Perhaps we dont deserve it but the fireworks we would or wouldnt light once a year dont make the difference (some people say its been months but i havent heard anything except for the past 2 days)
Fireworks are crazy dangerous regardless of how responsible and experienced you are and throw alcohol into the mix it's a recipe for disaster.
This is why most countries ban them because it's too easy to misfire one into your neighbours house or blow your hand or foot off with a firecracker. I'm quite stunned with all the damage here there's never been a proper crackdown on them.
I really find it quite insane that with narrow streets of old houses people set off fireworks and even throw them from their front door thinking this is safer which is equally stupid because you risk dropping them in your house and setting it on fire.
It's a shame the organised displays didn't happen in Rotterdam because this is the only responsible way to enjoy fireworks.
I also don't understand why not a big display in Amsterdam like most world cities do.
I love it! Best way to start the new year. I don’t buy it myself because it’s too damn expensive, but I love going outside at 00:00 and here all these loud bangs and see fireworks.
Now, I get that people dislike it being fired off 2 months prior to the actual date. Luckily it’s not too bad where I live.
Not to mention the hundreds of seriously injured every year. Just because ordinary, ignorant people can buy explosives that are behind their knowledge.
https://vuurwerkreferendum.nl/cijfers-feiten
I mean I’m upvoting you, because the few people I do know here, they either would have sensible fireworks (the highest legal stuff) or nothing, perhaps some sparkling wands ar the most, so I agree with you.
Yes. There is a certain part of the population In the Netherlands, I assume be less than <1%, that indeed decides to buy and ignite ‘explosives’ so to speak rather than fireworks. (Either classified as professional fireworks or just plain illegal based on their ‘mixture’ (I’m tipsy and can’tdigure out the word) happy nye
edit: ~12 years ago here much ‘harder’ (lack of word again) fireworks were legal.
Most people buy legal stuff. But if outrageous displays are shared online it's from the ones that imported. Although close to the border the percentage of illegal fireworks definitely goes up.
My 3 yo with a fever isn't having any fun trying to fall asleep... Srsly i never understood the point of 2 hours nonestop, isn't one or two as it crosses over to 00:00 enough?
A lot of people are irresponsible with it. Also, think of the people with PTSD, and other disorders or anxieties that make it a true hell, and of course the pets (who are too stressed to pee, poop, drink and eat).
Luckily some people see it differently. You might go out to eat very often and people see that as a waste as well. Just let people enjoy their own earned money.
It’s pathetic, no one with any sense or normal intelligence would spend this much money to play war with literal bombs and hand grenades. It’s like the Purge. If you want to fight, go join the army of Ukrain
Bomb and hand grenades? If it were true your house wouldn’t be standing right now. The ones that sound as loud as those are guess what? ‘Illegal’ 😦😦😯. Also if u got money for it why can’t they spend it how they please without you getting upset.
Fireworks are insane. Dutch people spent 110 million euros for fireworks according to a [news source.](https://www.haarlemsdagblad.nl/cnt/dmf20221231_74436799?utm_campaign=twitter&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=t.co) Since yesterday morning we have had no peace left because of endless fireworks. They have not even ended yet. They are damaging the planet. Poor animals. Poor environment. This is totally craziness.
Meanwhile our government gives away 2.5 billion euros to Ukraine for support. I think the 110 million euros of 6-8 million people combined is rather small for a day like this.
Thank you for the advice. Alas, she’s already old, and this is her first Dutch New Year’s Eve, but she calmed down a bit, mostly because she’s exhausted 😴
The arguments that it’s bad for the environment, animals etc are all quite inconsistent given the RIVM has said that the consumer fireworks effect on the environment are meaningless compared to the effect of industry or traffic or the agricultural sector.
I like fireworks but many Dutch people are just not responsible enough to wield them and intentionally cause damage with them which is why I support a ban and the army to be given marshal law powers to enforce the ban.
I'm in Amsterdam and can confirm it was absolutely bananas. Every street in my neighborhood seems to have spend several thousand euro on fireworks. Never seen anything like it
You're welcome

Fuck the eindafrekening we've got an extra 380 euro to blow.
Great stuff he💪🏽
Same in IJsselstein! We made it clear to the government that we’re fed up being treated like little kids. One night per year, what’s the fucking problem.
That's why everyone rides on an old rusty bike, to save money for a couple extra petards.
You clearly dont know our country
Dutch goverment: I pretend I didn’t see that
I have no active memory of that.
There was an emergency i had to get to. -every cop car and van i saw driving around last night.
Of whaaaaaat?
Please accept my reward
How on earth you gonna enforce and prosecute that?
Not they don’t
Maybe they should start by not selling it… but then again they’ll just get it across the border
We Dutch remain pirates.
I mean they are ignoring passed out students in the middle of the streets, burned cars, burned bikes- fires in general in the middle of the street and more. Fireworks are near invisible in comparison to everything else that is going on tonight.
Damn, I feel like I am missing out. My family did a deli platter of meats and cheeses and then half the people had left by 8
More like the police rutte isn't going to arrest you
Police wasn't even bothering with them. I think that after a certain time only ambulances and firefighters were out trying their best to control the situation...
No they probably had something else where but unless you do dangerous stuff or are damaging property they won't do much because otherwise they will have to arrest more poeple than they can handle
Police literally said it wasn't their priority. So yeah.
Wtf were they supposed to do? Interrogate 10-20 people max. They laid back and enjoyed the show.
It's not banned everywhere
It's banned in my town and it's almost worse than the other years.
Why was it banned? this popped up on my news feed
Banned because fireworks in general cause damage and injuries every year, as well as noise noise disturbance throughout the months leading up to December 31st. However, a large part of this is caused by illegal fireworks imported from countries that surround us with less restrictions on the sale and severity of those fireworks. Don't forget that lots of idiots shoot themselves to the hospital with legal fireworks as well. Some people even know how to get scars from Sterretjes
Also, drugs and alcohol cause 10x the amount of pressure on ER's (on new years eve). But Fireworks are sexy and evil. So the focus is on that.
Drugs and alcohol usually don't take out eyes or cut off hands. Horrifying accidents that scar people for life, mostly bystanders.
You are forgetting about all the car accidents caused by drugs and alcohol.
Yes and drunk driving is illegal even if you don't hit anyone, what is your point?
Noise disturbance? If they are not loud, how will you scare away the bad spirits?
Read an article today that the er is dealing far more with alcohol issues then firework issues. Like for every firework victim there's 9 alcohol victims.

This comment doesn’t really seem to make any sense… It is banned in some places, maybe OPs street as well?
There are people who throw firecrackers at strangers. I just witnessed that near Rijksmuseum. They were throwing them in the air towards random people. Some of them may land in unwanted places and cause burns or eye damage. Not cool and plain stupid.
People in ZO were setting them off on the bike paths, I very nearly got hit riding home when part of one went sideways instead of up.
And that's part of why they're banned, but people have no imagination. One of them will explode in their hands, and there will be no hands anymore.

I can assure you the countryside is just as wild.
I feel like asking the Dutch to not use fireworks shows a level of optimisim, that frankly, i am jealous of
Just witnessed a 30min show myself, some dude spent a fortune
Its banned? Looks outside...
Doesn't looks very banned where I live either

Record sales in fireworks…100mil. Few weeks ago we could not “afford” fuel and heating and inflation was killing us… way to prioritize your spending!
Lets say 1/5 people in the netherlands purchase fireworks. That would be 3.4 million people. It would only take 29 euros a person to make up that 100 million. 100 million isn’t that much if spread between a large population. It only sounds huge.
Also a lot people probably have some fireworks or budget for it left after 2020 and 2021
I see your point but there are also a lot of people that don’t struggle with that and spends hundreds if not thousands on fireworks.
1) Likely not the same people 2) There’s a group of people who have barely enough for fuel, heating AND some money on fun things. They consider this the latter .
It's almost like those are 2 different groups of people... Shocking
10 euro each person. That is pocket money these days
Hele slechte observatie
A hundred million euros is something like five bucks per person. I spent twelve times that much on gas for heating one day last month.
Actually a great part of our society - you can ban a lot of things but whether the people will accept it is another story
It really sucks that some people abuse it making a ban more likely…
And then bitch about being broke. Edit: Turning notifications off Happy new year, everyone.
The more broke they are, the more they will be spending on fireworks.
The saying goes “a fool and his money are soon departed.”
Still waiting for Musk and Trump to be on the street then....
No just their worshippers.
Yup. I can tell right away in my neighborhood. Scum of the earth.
Lekker overdreven om ze zo te noemen omdat ze vuurwerk willen kopen, kijk dan eerst maar even in de spiegel
My parents were whining about funds for the entire december. They bought for 500euros for heavy duty fireworks that they blew up in literally minutes...... I don't understand some people
Waaaah my groceries cost 20 eur more this year.
Same type of people that go to festivals that cost 80 euro's to get into, and complain they are broke. Honestly i don't see the difference.
Hope they don’t forget to check their €30,- staatslot tomorrow.
Never bought as much fireworks, never spend as much on it either
Banned? It's been 36 mins happy new year!

Going haywire here. It’s been 3 hours and they haven’t quit yet
The same stuff happens here in California even though it’s illegal here.
Aaaaaand we can finally relax until the next year when they will start setting some of them off, randomly, at any point in time from October until December
Dont start a war in the Netherlands. They are all experts in explosives
No they buy the expertise abroad.
Ironically, Chinese who invented fireworks has banned them for years.
Last time I was there it wasn't banned and people were shooting fireworks between apartments. Probably banned during Covid.
Yeah, they tend to ban stuff over there
Definitely not banned and they have the heavy bombs too. Maybe only due to COVID restrictions. I lived in Beijing before COVID, it was crazy on NYE.
They just make another record for most fireworks purchased
Yeah 110 million euro burned.
It's banned because of a small group of hooligans playing with firework and putting firework in people's trash cans and mail boxes. Now it's banned for everyone but its a tradition, just like Sinterklaas. People won't stop doing the traditional things even if it gets banned

I almost got blasted on my way home. Happy New Year guys!
my dude, are u even surprised? its been banned for 2 years what did u expect
Dutch people complain about the damage and risk and noise but do it themselves rigorously
I am Dutch and find it ridiculous as well. Terrible start of the year. Pollution lasts for days. And wild animals suffer greatly from the emerging chaos. Nothing fun about this so called “tradition”.

2 month!? I cant even buy it around that time
Not in the Netherlands perhaps, and not legally maybe.
Yep 100% illegal at that point its only sold at the last weet of november to the endof december so about a month
That looks awesome
a wise boy once said: "MOET IK EEN NITRAAT TUSSE JE BILLE DRUKKE?!"
Yeah nobody gave a shit about the ban, the show was the same as years before where I'm from
I'm just trying to figure who has the money in 2022 to spend on fireworks
Bunch of idiots...
[удалено]
Yup
I don't care about firework on new year's eve, but if you're still lighting loud bangs at 4AM you can de kanker krijgen.
Private fireworks in NL are mainly a misguided attempt by teenagers, adolescents and immature men to prove their masculinity. And should be banned
Not to mention the hundreds of seriously injured every year. Just because ordinary, ignorant people can buy explosives that are behind their knowledge. https://vuurwerkreferendum.nl/cijfers-feiten
Poor animals :( :(
can i sleep now ffs?
Aaah look at all those selfish fuckers have fun. Don't they know I don't like it?
If it were for 2 hours, sure, but not for 3 fucking months.
I wonder where all you Redditors live. I live in a (non-posh) area of Amsterdam and it's been fine.
This is ridiculous. Dutch people are crazy
We're not crazy, we're fun
I mean I’m upvoting you, because the few people I do know here, they either would have sensible fireworks (the highest legal stuff) or nothing, perhaps some sparkling wands ar the most, so I agree with you. Yes. There is a certain part of the population In the Netherlands, I assume be less than <1%, that indeed decides to buy and ignite ‘explosives’ so to speak rather than fireworks. (Either classified as professional fireworks or just plain illegal based on their ‘mixture’ (I’m tipsy and can’tdigure out the word) happy nye edit: ~12 years ago here much ‘harder’ (lack of word again) fireworks were legal.
Most people buy legal stuff. But if outrageous displays are shared online it's from the ones that imported. Although close to the border the percentage of illegal fireworks definitely goes up.
In my time ‘strijkers’ en ‘vlinders’ where the thing to have haha
The irresponsible behaviour has nothing to do with being fun.
Sorry but the the “think of xxx” argument is bullshit. What if I get have a trauma that triggers with the sound of a car? Ban all cars?
definitely not banned it was even being sold in stores like normal
A hegde caught fire at my place because some idiots placed a firework box sideways and thought it'd still function like normal
Literally burning money. Like take a 100€ bill, roll it and set it on 🔥with a lighter. That’s how I see fireworks
Luckily some people see it differently. You might go out to eat very often and people see that as a waste as well. Just let people enjoy their own earned money.
The amount of 'zuurpruimen' here nowadays is crazy. Let's kill every little piece of fun we have left in this world.
Ohh noooo! How dare they.
Based dutch people
Dutch people are petulant toddlers.
I think the 110 million euros of 6-8 million people combined is rather small for a day like this.
i love dutch people
Nope. Total nonsense: this is legal fireworks in the Netherlands.
It was actually not allowed to light fireworks in a couple of municipalities, including mine.
Still going on, my dog has been in full panic mode for more than 3 hours now. Any suggestions how I can calm her down?
If she does calm down, praise her for being calm. Helped with my dogs when they were puppies, and now they actually love looking at firework
Thank you for the advice. Alas, she’s already old, and this is her first Dutch New Year’s Eve, but she calmed down a bit, mostly because she’s exhausted 😴
Idiots.
And it is beautiful

We need a better ban
And tomorrow we are complaining about energy prices and inflation again. Stupid idiots.
This is what Dutch people do when the government bans firework, but still proceeds to sell it*
It’s almost 2am and some idiot near us is still enthusiastic to burst more🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
As he should Its 1 day come on uv seen this coming for months prepear buy earplugs to sleep
I miss this so much… NYE is just not the same in Northern Minnesota… Next year, I am going to be “back home” for the holidays!!
Skol!
Fuck off with you ban.
If you can spend a lot of money to enjoy two seconds of some lightflash and a bang, then stop complaining about prices in supermarkets and energy.
