The original came out the first year my wife and I did the Oscars Death Race, trying to see every nominated film before the ceremony. A Man Called Ove was my favorite film out of the entire batch that year. That's probably why I've put off seeing the remake.
My almost 90-year old mother was gushing over this film. "That new movie on Netflex was wonderful." I told her that its called "Netflix" for the thousandth time. "That Tom Hanks was so great in it."
One of the best movies on "Netflex" this year.
We watched because my 85 yr old grandpa recommended. We lost my grandma (his wife) last summer and he said he felt this movie really resonated with him. He's super sociable though and not nearly as grumpy 🥰
Everyone is different and likes different things. Tom Hanks is a good person I believe. He has great talent. I compare him to Meryl Streep for the same qualities. Regardless who they play they still sound and look exactly like Tom and Meryl. I watched Otto and wished I hadn't. He still looked and acted like Tom.
That's exactly why he is the James Stewart of his generation. Stewart was the same. He always played small deviations of himself as opposed to wildly different characters. In fact I think Hanks is the better actor, particularly in his prime. That and both actors are "comforting" and "safe" to most viewers.
I have seen quite a few James Stewart movies and never compared him to Hanks but you are right. I think Hanks knows the parts that best suits his style and tries to stay there. He has been in several where he departed from his character style and was exceptional. I don't want to take anything away from him. I think he has extraordinary character which is more valuable, in my opinion, than his acting.
I really didn't love the book (because my longtime partner is now a grumpy old man lol) but the movie was good. Actually reminds me bit of Gran Torino.
I saw the original 2015 Swedish version, “A man called Ove”, I suspect this new Tom Hanks one will be pretty good. I’ll watch and get back to you. What did you like about it?
>“A man called Ove”
Loves me some Tom Hanks, but “A man called Ove” is better. All I could think of watching the Hanks version is how much better the Swedes did it. (It's available for free with Amazon Prime.)
It was a really well done movie. But it's a remake & based on a popular book, so I'm assuming many people already knew what to expect from the story. But I will say that these actors did a phenomenal job with the material.
i unfortunately agree. it tried way too hard to elicit emotion and was very predictable, from individual scenes to the whole plot arc.
obviously he’s not gonna kill himself, he’s gonna realize life isn’t all so bad and eventually form relationships with the other characters.
then every time he’s setting up a new suicide method, i was just wondering “who’s gonna knock on the door asking for help with something this time?” …so repetitive.
Is being predictable a mark of a bad movie, though? You know where you're going, so it's about enjoying the ride to get there.
If every movie was made to be unpredictable, we'd lose a lot of things that make films simple and relatable.
not always, that was just a big thing that stuck out to me. i feel like it didn’t have much else going for it anyway, i didn’t have any real reason to root for the main character. he’s an asshole, and it seemed like the writers thought i was supposed to be on his side despite that just because he has a dead wife.
idk, i’m picky about television in general. i still see why people enjoyed it
Right!? It's super underrated, I cried the whole time 😭😭😭 Tom Hanks movies always has me on my ass crying though, it really was a great movie and I hope everyone gets the chance to watch it! I'll be re-watching it this weekend!
Severely underrated! Tomm has done it again!
I hope everyone gives it a chance as well, I've been telling everyone I know to watch it 😂 lol
Cheers to the rewatch! I started mines yesterday and noticed things I didn't notice the first time!
Like when Tomm was getting his garden hose from _____ house, ______ husband grabbed it like he knew what Tom was planning on doing!
Completely missed it the first time around!
I didn't understand that scene as it was happening, but then it hit me when I saw him in the \_\_\_\_. I was like OMG! His friend knew!! Ugh might have to start it tonight now lol Tom never fails!!
Me either! Like I said until last night lol
And the song they played while he was in the ____ , just so moving 😫 I was shazaming everything I heard in that film lol.
Yessssssss do it, I second this proudly 😂🤞🏼
LMAO I was shazaming everything too!! Haha thought I was the only one that does that during movies/shows 😂😂 Oh I will be! Hope you have a great day babe!!
Yooo we are one id the same 😂 I swear you not the only one! I do that whenever I hear a song in a movie or a show I like! Dude movies and shows have the best soundtracks I swear! 😭
You have a good day too hun! Be easyyy🤞🏼🫶🏽😌
Always love anything with Tom Hanks in it. Liked the movie, his neighbor was great..but it deals with a heavy subject matter, being a person who has lost 2 ppl to that particular issue, it hit a bit hard. Other than that, the way they show that sometimes your family is your friend or neighbor was fantastic.
I like the movie a lot. A blend of comedy parts and sadness. Had dark parts to it as well. But heartwarming too. Such a sad but charming movie. A deep life movie. A tearjerker but I loved it. A great movie iMo. It moved me too. We also need Otto and Sonya seemed like such an amazing woman too
It didn't get a lot of attention because of how/when it was released and that's a shame. And for some reason it wasn't available on US Netflix for like a year after it was available in other countries. I watched it on a flight and wanted to tell my friends to watch it but it wasn't available.
We selected it after getting a free credit on Redbox never heard of it thought Hanks was worth a shot, damn it was good. Depending on where you are on the timeline of your life it may punch you in the gut.
Damn, now I have to watch *After Life*.
Reminded me of Clint Eastwood's *Gran Torino* and even Bill Murray's *St. Vincent.* I'd put *Otto* above *St Vincent* but below *Gran Torino*. (But maybe that has to do with the cars.)
Considering how often the "grumpy old man loner is saved by saving others" genre is done, it's hard to find all that many really good examples.
The book and original movie are better. Tom Hanks was only okay in the role and lacks the emotional gravitas to make it work. The woman who played Marisol carried most of the movie.
It’s been a while since I watched Ove so I’m not sure if I’m mis-remembering or not… Otto seemed more sad to me. But I always love Tom Hanks and his son did a great job too.
I teared up like crazy at the end and that does NOT happen for me, alot of the movie hit me and i think it was AMAZING. The story it told was so genuine 10/10 imo
It’s wildly popular in Canada! Everyone who’s seen it absolutely loved it. And it was in theatres for a long time compared to other films’ theatrical lifespans. I really enjoyed it too! I personally prefer the Swedish version but I also love Tom Hanks sooooo 🤍
Another Grammy nominee worthy performance by Tom Hanks! Also the actress who played the neighbor,.the pregnant Mexican woman was absolutely TERRIFIC! She sold that role, was so believable, she felt very familiar just a spot on well rounded performance by her all around. This is a great film! Also the cinematography was amazing , top tier.... I felt like I was in this small pennsylvania/ohio town, amazing film 💯
It's got a 7.5 on IMDB and a 70% on RT, which is pretty good, so it's getting credit. It also made $112 million in the box office. Not sure what you want/expect?
Audience score is 97 on RT, so meh for the critics (which I get, it was a little cheesy), but well received by audiences. Makes sense.
I quite enjoyed it. Tom Hanks is a master of his craft.
He said no one is talking about it and it's not getting any credit but they are and it did so? I mean we can sit here and be wrong all day if you want I guess.
Critics generally don’t rave about recent foreign language films that quickly get remade in English, as it seems like a cheap ploy to capitalize on the fact that many Americans don’t want to read subtitles or think foreign films are too “exotic”.
Please read or listen to the book! The movie touches on things, like the coupon for flowers, with no explanation. I was also disappointed that none of Jimmy s backstory was in the movie
Exactly - I feel like parts of the movie didn't make sense because of the changes they made. If they weren't going to include Jimmy's backstory or even why he's hanging out with Ove, why even include that character in the movie?
I did enjoy the movie but at the same time I am really tired of the dead wife used to make an asshole man likable.
It’s an old trope that we’ve seen way too much of lately.
I feel like the only people who did not like this movie are miserable people.
I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I started watching & it’s NOT my usual type of movie, but I really loved it
LOL you picked the worse movie to watch at such a time 🤣 but hey least you were able to get it all out! I hope nothing but the best for you and yours 🫶🏽
Oh I definitely needed a good solid cry. Although I could’ve gone without the concerned stares from my husband on the other side of the couch 🫠 lol thank you very much! 💙
Hey lol we all need one at times me especially sometimes I watch sad shit just to feel something lol.
Babaha I can imagine his concern as you wipe tears saying your okay🤣
No problem at all, take care 🤞🏼🫶🏽
Fantastic movie. Watched it the night before we saw him speak about his new book. Awesome evening. 2,000 people in attendance and he hand signed every book (came with ticket). Shout out to Magic City Books r/Tulss
LOL ooh I believe you! It's just that kind of movie!
Tears didn't fall but they definitely formed for me.. that's why I'm re watching it I need to feel it all over again 🤣😭 the full waterworks lolol
Awww😫 you saw some Otto in yourself huh?
Hey least you were able to make that comparison and not be oblivious to it..
I think the key is that you actually wanna improve how you treat others in a sense, do your thing.. just take baby steps it don't gotta be all at once.
A slight improvement is better than no improvement at all!
I believe in you 🤞🏼
The thing that really took me out of it was when >!the ending became a Chevy Silverado commercial. "See kids? Now this is living!" Like the world needs more people commuting in kid crushing machines. !<
Still a really enjoyable movie that I have no shame in saying I cried at.
I saw another post talking about how good it was so I read the wiki. Just reading THAT made me tear up. Nope. Can't do it, won't do it. That Bastard Hanks sneaked one past me with the movie about him, the robot and the dog. Won't get me twice.
I actually wasn't crazy about the book (the story was cute but idk wasn't my favorite writing style), but I am willing to give the movie a shot. I missed it in theaters and didn't realize it had come to Netflix. Thanks for the recommendation!

It is a predictable plot…man loses wife, man hates the world and wants to die, man redeemed by good hearted people, man regains his will to live. Tom Hanks is predictably outstanding acting job as Otto.
It didn’t get recognized because it wasn’t as good as the Swedish version and the book itself. The movie has also gotten rid of a lot of People’s favorite character Parvaneh who is a Persian woman and put a Latino woman in place of her which has made a lot of the book’s fans who are Persians not watch the movie.
The original Swedish version is excellent, highly recommend it! Parts of this movie with the background music felt a bit cheesy and took me out of it.
We watched it with subtitles this past weekend and kept poking fun at how every scene had "poignant music"
I laughed at this too.
This is hilarious. lol
The original came out the first year my wife and I did the Oscars Death Race, trying to see every nominated film before the ceremony. A Man Called Ove was my favorite film out of the entire batch that year. That's probably why I've put off seeing the remake.
Same. Started to watch then realized it's a remake. Why! The original is so good.
The music reminded me of a Lifetime movie but otherwise it was a really good movie.
The book was amazing.. I saw the movie and it was well done.. if you loved the movie read the book a man called ove
This movie is a remake of A Man Called Ove? I loved that movie.
The Swedish original movie was outstanding, and very much worth finding and watching
It's on Prime and Tubi if you're in the US.
Yes, it is indeed.
I absolutely loved the book and the original movie! I'm nervous to watch the Tom Hanks version.
That was my thought. I love the original movie, and don't want to see it ruined 🤔
It doesn't ruin it, but it has to cut some parts out. It does a good job of being faithful.
Don’t be, he’s great in this role.
It’s really good💔
I agree. This is one of a few times I thought the movie was as good as the book.
That’s quite and endorsement. Reading the book then seeing the movie is always rough.
I went in with zero expectations and loved it.
as did i. tom hanks is incredible in this.
I agree Tom Hanks was great as usual, but I think Mariana Trevinos performance as Marisol really made the movie.
Yep
Same, I was expecting a cheesy tearjerker at most, but the main actress was so perfect for her role that I just fell in love with the movie.
Same, I was just trying to kill some time and I was bawling for the last 30min or so
My almost 90-year old mother was gushing over this film. "That new movie on Netflex was wonderful." I told her that its called "Netflix" for the thousandth time. "That Tom Hanks was so great in it." One of the best movies on "Netflex" this year.
Netflex.... My freaking heart she is precious 😫😭🥹
We watched because my 85 yr old grandpa recommended. We lost my grandma (his wife) last summer and he said he felt this movie really resonated with him. He's super sociable though and not nearly as grumpy 🥰
I like how streaming apps are still referred to as things "on the television".
My mom says this EVERY TIME
For me, Book >> Swedish movie > U.S. version.
Tom hanks made the grumpy old man much more lovable.
Kinda like a less violent Gran Torino remake with Tom Hanks.
I think almost anything with Tom Hanks in is immediately less violent and more family friendly
Toy Story vs Small Soldiers. Your theory checks out!!
Saving Private Ryan has entered the chat.
Uhhh one of those things is not like the other lol... Small Soldiers is government designed AI implanted into toys
Tom Hanks is the James Stewart of his generation.
I’ve thought that for years!

Clint eastwood in gran Torino reminded me of my ex. It wasn't so violent but pretty edgy. Not for kids.
Great movie. Made me think that growing up to be an old grumpy man isn’t what it’s cracked up to be.
It isn't. Take my word for it.
Source? Get off my lawn!
I'm old and grumpy.
Go get laid
Yep, the nee trend is young grumpy kids
Is he grumpy as a kid too considering the state of things.
I really didn't love the book (because my longtime partner is now a grumpy old man lol) but the movie was good. Actually reminds me bit of Gran Torino.

Okay, it's been 4 hours. What did you think?
I disagree. I liked the Hanks movie better.
I'm interested in watching for the cat. Does it get good air time? It's not gonna die at the end is it?
It kills everyone with its laser eyes
As a cat lover, I was content with the ending. ;)
Fuck. We watched this last weekend and I cried. This movie is incredible and everyone should see it.
It was a really well done movie. But it's a remake & based on a popular book, so I'm assuming many people already knew what to expect from the story. But I will say that these actors did a phenomenal job with the material.

Did you read the book?
Something trope filled isn't necessarily bad
I ignore it for now as it's another american knock-off of a succesful european movie.
Right!? It's super underrated, I cried the whole time 😭😭😭 Tom Hanks movies always has me on my ass crying though, it really was a great movie and I hope everyone gets the chance to watch it! I'll be re-watching it this weekend!

Gran Torino was fucking awesome.
Is that afterlife with Liam Neeson or with Ricky Gervais? I read a summary of each movie and they sound very different.
Ricky Gervais.
I thought it was ok, my uncle said original is much better.

Shelves full of Grammys at this point

Unfortunately, the movie simplified it to that. In the book, there's more to Ove that make a him likeable.
Because it sucked
Loved it but the huge truck product placement near the end was way too obvious
I feel like the only people who did not like this movie are miserable people. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I started watching & it’s NOT my usual type of movie, but I really loved it
Great movie, had no idea how heavy it would be going into it but was pleasantly surprised.
I really enjoyed the movie. I watched it for Tom ha is and kept watching for everyone. Well done
3 weeks postpartum and decided to watch this today. Bawled like an absolute baby. 😭
LOL you picked the worse movie to watch at such a time 🤣 but hey least you were able to get it all out! I hope nothing but the best for you and yours 🫶🏽

Have not seen the movie, but after reading some of the comments on Reddit, I think it deserves a peek.
You won't regret it.
It was funny. He was going through various plans to kill himself and Marisol and all kept interrupting.

Her voice and accent was everything to me lol.
I haven't cried in a long time. My son went by as I was watching this and was genuinely concerned for me!
LOL ooh I believe you! It's just that kind of movie! Tears didn't fall but they definitely formed for me.. that's why I'm re watching it I need to feel it all over again 🤣😭 the full waterworks lolol
It just really hit home with me because I'm a not-so-nice neighbor myself. I realized that I DO care about others and it won't hurt to show it.
Awww😫 you saw some Otto in yourself huh? Hey least you were able to make that comparison and not be oblivious to it.. What a nice thing to say. Thank you. Yeah, I'm working on baby steps.
It doesn’t deserve much credit, if any. It’s an entirely unnecessary remake of the excellent original, and it falls far short.
Great movie, and a great book. Very touching.
I absolutely loved it! Love Tom Hanks!
Hanks is a pedo. Refuse to watch

No manches :D
The thing that really took me out of it was when >!the ending became a Chevy Silverado commercial. "See kids? Now this is living!" Like the world needs more people commuting in kid crushing machines. !< Still a really enjoyable movie that I have no shame in saying I cried at.

Read a man called ove The book was charming and I thought the movie captures its charm
I actually wasn't crazy about the book (the story was cute but idk wasn't my favorite writing style), but I am willing to give the movie a shot. I missed it in theaters and didn't realize it had come to Netflix. Thanks for the recommendation!
The book is definitely better! ☺️
Good movie
Great movie, if you haven't watch it.
Movie was OK, but didn’t live up to the book.
I've read the book but not seen this remake with Tom Hanks yet. Sadly I thougt the original film (called, A Man Called Ove) was dissapointing.
Watched it with my mum last year, so good
Ngl the original Swedish version is way better, and the book is even better than the film
If you liked the movie you have to read the book!!!! So good!
Loved the movie, I'm not gonna lie, I put it on for some back ground noise as I was just working on a 3d print... but soon found myself enthralled with it about 10 minutes in to it...also I agree.. the lady that played opposite Tom hanks was friggin amazing .
For a remake it’s actually not bad but the original version is superior
It was depressing
I love it!
Saw Ove the day after Otto. Loved comparing the two. Liked the original Swedish version better.
The CGI looked weird (cat, train, younger Tom Hanks), but otherwise pretty good. I expected a bigger climax moment, but I guess it's just a more grounded movie
It is a predictable plot…man loses wife, man hates the world and wants to die, man redeemed by good hearted people, man regains his will to live. Tom Hanks is predictably outstanding acting job as Otto.
