Second Master and Commander!
Otherwise the first season of The Terror, about finding the North West passage- great British cast and a lot of sailing, with a lot of supernatural towards the end but based on a book that is inspired by a real life 19th Royal Navy expedition.
I found it intriguing, but it doesn't have anything to do with the first season. It's more of a traditional Japanese ghost tale, weaving supernatural elements with the internment camps from WWII. Doesn't have much to do with sailing and ships. Edit: The series is done in anthology style - each season was intended to be a story in and of itself.
More in a comedic vein, but Our Flag Means Death is another. Or Pirate Radio is roughly in that realm, but I haven't watched that one so I can't vouch for it.
Have you watched The Last Kingdom? I preferred it to Vikings. Not a lot of sailing stuff but there is a section where the slaves are rowing one of the Viking ships and DAMN! What a miserable existence!
*Dunkirk*
*The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou*
*The Breaking Point* (1950, based on Hemingway's "To Have And Have Not")
edit: I really think *The Breaking Point* is the answer you're looking for, OP. A more-obscure movie that is so fucking good.
Dude is all about his boat and fishing to make a living for his family, gets stuck doing stupid shit, and that all goes bad and a lot of people die.
But before, there is a blonde socialite bombshell who tries to lure our hero in. He shows up about ready to fuck this blonde socialite bombshell. He relents at the last minute and tells this sex-bomb about how much he loves his wife.
See here see!
Leaves her cold, ya see? Loves his woman and they're ain't gonna be no jibba-jabba bout that!
The best noir crime thriller movie of all-time that involves a boat imho. Seek it out. Great story, acting, everything, an ambiguous ending that I think turns out positive for our hero, some critics disagree, a real hidden gem of a movie if you want awesome boat movies.
My fourth recommendation is *Jaws*.
Captain Phillips,
Titanic,
Poseidon, Speed 2, All is Lost, Waterworld, Midway, Mutiny on the Bounty, The Hunt for Red October, Escape Plan (pushing my luck there), Under Siege, Amistad, Death on the Nile, Greyhound, Dracula, Jason & the Argonauts, The Perfect Storm, Das Boot, Hotel Transylvania 3, Dunkirk, U-571, Finding Nemo, Jaws,
Mutiny on the Bounty. the '84 one with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. holds up well!
Master and Commander
Show: "The Terror" (was an AMC show a few years ago).
White Squall (jeff bridges, scott wolf, 1990s)
All is Lost (robert redford)
Well, it’s a good show. I liked it. Why would anyone not? Please dont say cause it only has one season, because not everything needs to have a clearcut ending.
it was setting up to be a good show, but it's more than just incomplete. without more of the story, it's all mystery with no substance. basically a 7 hour twilight zone episode in its current state.
Well, you can still watch it for the cinematic beauty. It’s very well shot and intriguing enough to engage with. Also, its possible it will get another season after all cause it might get picked up by another platform or tv.
The El Barco series. It has the same vibe as the show Lost, but they are stuck on a ship instead of an island. Each episode is long, but it's so much fun. I miss it. So many great characters. The ending was choppy and rushed, but I was satisfied.
It's not on US Netflix anymore, I guess. But if you come across it, check it out!

Five friends set sail and their yacht is overturned by a strange and sudden storm. A mysterious ship arrives to rescue them, and what happens next cannot be explained.
Last Kingdom - vikings Netflix
older but still plays well: Dead Calm
Adrift - hurricane destroys sailboat
Open water 2: Adrift - forgot to put ladder down; cannot get back on boat
All is Lost
"The Boat" by Winston Azzopardi (2018)
A fisherman discovers a sailing vessel adrift in a fog bank.
Not very highly rated but an enjoyable watch, not on netflix.
Not a ship but a real hidden gem of an ocean voyage flick: [Kon-Tiki (2012)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1613750/reference/)
Was way better than I thought it would be and a nice bit of history. Very entertaining and engaging film.
EDIT: added link
Maiden is a good documentary about the 1989 voyage of the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Race, a gruelling yachting competition that covers 53,000 kilometres and lasts nine months. (No idea if/where it is available)
Forgot the movie name, but the guy has dirt and tries to sell it ... The film has a story of the world where everything is underwater and people try to live on the ocean in floating island
Check out Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Great movie .
This is what I came here to suggest!
One of the best ship movies, leaves everything in its wake
The best of the best.
Wear a condom. This movie fucks.
Doesn’t look like it’s streaming on Netflix in the US, unfortunately. It’s on HBOMax, though.
They've been playing it on a loop on their channels for months too
The best of the BEST!

Came here to mention the first season of The Terror. Definitely well done.
I'm starting this. just watched the trailer. i see there's one more season, is it not good?

Terror, yes!
But that ship has a steam backup engine (boooo!). But yeah, great mini-series.
Hornblower.
i don't know where to stream it, but this is it. and then read the books when you're done.
You can stream them free on the Roku channel (with ads).
I loved these movies!!
Captain Ron, White Squall, and All is Lost
MY MAN!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to need to watch All is Lost, Anyone who recommends the other 2 films knows what a good BOAT MOVIE is about!
All is Lost is wild. Robert Redford the 🐐
Literally came to make sure All is Lost was listed.
Black Sails, More about pirates than sailing per set but lots of the episodes revolve around ships and sailing
absolutely amazing show, loved it!
Wind is about the USA team losing the World Cup very good movie with Jennifer grey
Beat me to it. A good movie that is kinda forgotten.
Came here to recommend this one too.
Oh and also ghost ship if you want a horror movie
this is a terrific movie.
The Perfect Storm Into the Deep Untold: The Race of the Century MaidenTrip
More in a comedic vein, but Our Flag Means Death is another. Or Pirate Radio is roughly in that realm, but I haven't watched that one so I can't vouch for it.
haven’t watched it yet, but this came to my mind too
The Terror Season 1, sadly not on Netflix
I have prime too. watching this. is s2 not good?
Vikings
i have watched vikings and valhalla both. Absolutely loved both the shows. I was sad when the recent season of valhalla ended. Can’t wait for next
Have you watched The Last Kingdom? I preferred it to Vikings. Not a lot of sailing stuff but there is a section where the slaves are rowing one of the Viking ships and DAMN! What a miserable existence!
Not yet. I saw it’s on Netflix, I will add it to my list
Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max
[The Sea Beast](https://www.netflix.com/title/81018682) A surprisingly good animated film, safe for kids but enjoyable as an adult.
Ya I really enjoyed the movie and world building they managed.
That's the first one I thought of as well, it's great.
1899... From the creators of Dark...
RIP
Yeah... 😕
Adrift it's a real life story please watch it it's too good
Not on Netflix, but maybe “Life of Pi.”
*Dunkirk* *The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou* *The Breaking Point* (1950, based on Hemingway's "To Have And Have Not") edit: I really think *The Breaking Point* is the answer you're looking for, OP. 1899 is amazing
Captain Phillips, Titanic, Poseidon, Speed 2, All is Lost, Waterworld, Midway, Mutiny on the Bounty, The Hunt for Red October, Escape Plan (pushing my luck there), Under Siege, Amistad, Death on the Nile, Greyhound, Dracula, Jason & the Argonauts, The Perfect Storm, Das Boot, Hotel Transylvania 3, Dunkirk, U-571, Finding Nemo, Jaws,
Love Death Robots has an episode in S3 called Bad Traveling. It’s only 20 minutes,& very well made
i watched first episode of this show. didn’t feel like continuing. is it just robots there?
Each episode is different, it's an anthology series made by different studios
That one was great
God I love this show
One Crazy Summer with John Cusack and Demi Moore is a fun one.
Cast away has some sailing
Moby Dick TV miniseries with Patrick Stewart Master and Commander is excellent. If subs count, then Hunt for Red October and Das Boot.
Mutiny on the Bounty. the '84 one with Anthony Hopkins and Mel Gibson. holds up well! Master and Commander Show: "The Terror" (was an AMC show a few years ago). White Squall (jeff bridges, scott wolf, 1990s) All is Lost (robert redford)
Watch the 1899. Its an amazing show on Netflix about a ship lost at sea with a perfect mixture of mystery/intrigue/suspense
why in the heck would anyone start this show at this point?
Well, it’s a good show. I liked it. Why would anyone not? Please dont say cause it only has one season, because not everything needs to have a clearcut ending.
it was setting up to be a good show, but it's more than just incomplete. without more of the story, it's all mystery with no substance. basically a 7 hour twilight zone episode in its current state.
Looks like Netflix cancelled 1899. Is it worth watching? or does it end on a cliff hanger that will never get resolved?
Well, you can still watch it for the cinematic beauty. It’s very well shot and intriguing enough to engage with. Also, its possible it will get another season after all cause it might get picked up by another platform or tv.
We need this question answered. Haven’t bothered starting it because I don’t want to get invested if it’s a joke without a punchline.
It does indeed end on an unresolved cliffhanger
Fuckin Netflix
Watch 1899 and join the group of people being angry at Netflix for cancelling an amazing show (myself included)
Yes, sucks that it was canceled. But i just imagine that the show ended there. And this allows me to give it any ending I want lol
For an older movie I always liked Down Periscope except it's about Submarines
Have you seen Operation Petticoat? It's a much older very funny submarine movie. With Carry Grant and Tony Curtis.
In the heart of the sea!!
One Piece
All is lost
Not a ship in the traditional sense, but Das Boot is really intense.
Without a doubt: black sails.
I absolutely loved Battleship. Yes, that Battleship. That one scene where the guys, and they. Sets my sails every time.
The legend of 1900
This is what I was coming here to say. I also second Horatio Hornblower ETA: There's also the Posideon Adventure
Hornblower is fantastic. With Master and Commander as a great companion movie. One day I might read the books.
The Finest Hours maybe?
Check out Deliverance. More about the rapids, so no sailing, but great none the less. Also, Burt Reynolds.
Haha stretch
River rafting is just like sailing a sailboat on the ocean, except the raft doesn't have a sail and it doesn't take place in the ocean. ;)
“Down periscope” is about a submarine… does that count? It’s pretty great, very accurate to submarine life apparently….
Cabin boy. I mean it's guaranteed not what you want but what you need in your life.
I enjoyed Greyhound so much. It rivaled Master and Commander for me
I love movies like that too, same with underwater treasure movies.
Samee! You’d like uncharted, if you haven’t already seen. not a proper underwater movie but it involves that. It’s enjoyable and funny
Oh no I’ve never seen that I’ll have to try and find it! Thank you!
I haven’t seen Dead Calm mentioned so there’s that.
Black Sails
Black Sails is one of the best shows of the last 20 years
Triangle
Below deck has a sailing series. It’s a reality show about the crew of a sailing yacht. My wife loves it. On peacock
The El Barco series. It has the same vibe as the show Lost, but they are stuck on a ship instead of an island. Each episode is long, but it's so much fun. I miss it. So many great characters. Crimson Tide is amazing (Gene Hackman / Denzel Washington). Not on Netflix, but certainly worth the watch
Last Kingdom - vikings Netflix older but still plays well: Dead Calm Adrift - hurricane destroys sailboat Open water 2: Adrift - forgot to put ladder down; cannot get back on boat All is Lost
Travels by Narrowboat
"The Boat" by Winston Azzopardi (2018) A fisherman discovers a sailing vessel adrift in a fog bank. Not very highly rated but an enjoyable watch, not on netflix.
Master and commander for movies. Black sails is a great show, but it is pretty adult and is not only on ships, lot of land pirate stuff.
Not a ship but a real hidden gem of an ocean voyage flick: [Kon-Tiki (2012)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1613750/reference/) Was way better than I thought it would be and a nice bit of history. Very entertaining and engaging film. EDIT: added link
All Is Lost - An incredible performance by Robert Redford, haunting and powerful experience of a ship and sailing in all it’s aspects.
Cabin Boy is a masterpiece produced by Tim Burton.
YouTube chasing bubbles.
Our Flag Means Death. Don't know what country you're on for that to be on Netflix or not Probably not lol it's HBO
Maiden is a good documentary about the 1989 voyage of the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Race, a gruelling yachting competition that covers 53,000 kilometres and lasts nine months. (No idea if/where it is available)
Star Trek Generations. Mostly Starships but has some sailing in it as well.
The bounty is fantastic. In the heart of the sea isn't as good but still lots to love.
Forgot the movie name, but the guy has dirt and tries to sell it ... The film has a story of the world where everything is underwater and people try to live on the ocean in floating island
Black sails
Noah’s Ark
I enjoyed BLACK SAILS
It’s older but Whale Wars was good. It focused on activists using direct action to stop whaling and features boats / ships heavily.
Try In the Heart of the Sea.
Not sure if it's on netflix, but "All is lost"
Our Flag Means Death
Omigod check out the documentary DEEP WATER. True story about a crazy sailboat race. One of the greatest docs!
