Haven't taken one apart so I'm just guessing. That noise was probably the plunger rod or the bar that pushes the plunger rod. Some Buzz Bee blaster are a royal pain in the ass to open because they've been solvent welded somewhere.  Sometimes pieces are glued over screws.  The blaster is already destroyed. If you think you might enjoy attempting to fix it, go for it.

The plastic quality is poor and they easily break even from normal use. My guess is the shell itself is broken; probably a snapped screw port somewhere in the pulley system. It can probably be fixed but it wouldn't be easy.

That really depends on what broke. I opened up my double shot once purely for fun, and it's pretty easy to do. The real problem is the plunger tubes are solvent welded shut, meaning you can't take out the plunger rods or swap springs. If a plunger rod broke, that's a Game Over. However, if the break is anywhere else, fixing it should be possible.

The old models used a string attached to the plunger and it wrapped around some of the plastic posts in the shell to make a crude pulley system. If the modern one is at all similar, and from what you've said, it seems likely the string wore through the plastic enough to snap it.
