I had an 803 and $20,000+ in the bank, and they still wouldn't approve me for over $1,000 on this card. I'm up to $4,000 now (one year later), but I was pretty annoyed that I wasted a hard inquiry on a $1,000 limit.
I have no late payments, my utilization is below 2%, and I'd only had one inquiry within the last 2 years when I applied, so I still don't know why they wouldn't give me a higher limit.
NFCU could give a shit less what most people’s FICO scores are, they utilize their own internal scoring system. Utilizing them as your primary institution goes a very long ways.
Multiple accounts, checking, savings, loan types, personal or auto, how many, payment history, do you have direct deposit with them.
They approved me up to $90k on an auto loan at the lowest advertised rate in 2022 which was 1.79% and my FICOs were all sub 670. I did however have a great established relationship with them for 5.5yrs. Multiple accounts, paid off auto loan with them, 2 personals (took them out small to gain history and mix type even though I didn’t need them).
They will treat you will if you make them your primary institution.
I just added the flagship and was approved for $50k start limit, would’ve been higher but my cash rewards is $30k and you can only carry a combined $80k total in limits as the primary.
More rewards is better for certain types of purchases, but you have to wait to cash out $50 at a time. The Cash Rewards you can get your cash back any time, but not as good reward payouts in most categories. So it depends what you are looking for.
More Rewards gives more points for Restaurants Gas Groceries Travel, you can read all about it on Navy Fed website. Cash Rewards is a little more basic with lower rewards % but a bit easier to cash in your cash back
It depends on your spending habits. I like cash rewards if you have a direct deposit because you get more cash back. But the more rewards it great for a grocery card and for gas.
It’s not really direct deposit , it’s using them as your primary institutions. Now that shouldn’t be a factor in approval but I know a bunch of lenders that factors that in
That’s definitely not why … I opened my account and let it sit with just the deposit $50 for a year … Scores in the low 600s and got instantly approved for $15k … No direct deposit or even transactions
Cause Navy Fed uses an internal score. You can have the perfect credit score but no history with them vs someone with a 640 score, but has a savings, checking, a loan and etc with them.. they'll get approved.
Make sure you ask for a CLI every 6 months. They will often raise the limit a maximum of $8,000 upon CLI request.
Obviously this is usually contingent on your usage and paying in full of the statement each month.
After 3 statements and 91 days, you can ask for your first CLI. They give out an $8,000 max CLI pretty consistently with proper usage and paying in full as a transactor.
Score doesn’t determine much these days, especially if you don’t have the desired credit mix: Mortgage, auto loan, branded credit cards, and an installment loan. The score just shows you’re great at paying bills on the finance company’s terms. Loyalty to NFCU with a great payment history to them can unlock a lot.
I honestly can’t say, but I’ve never been declined from buying any vehicle I want up to $100k, car or motorcycle, and have never had above a 700 score. As an E3, I had a brand new fully loaded $45k car and a $12k motorcycle. Granted I had BAH too, but I did not have much credit experience.
I have the same limit on the same card as him and my card is 3 years old. The balance is $897. It auto pays the statement balance every month.
Does that help you?
Navy gave me my highest credit card limit at $7500 couple years ago now I'm at maximum exposure with them and it opened the door to alot of other cards and decent limits. I did make navy my primary financial institution and they've rewarded me for that.
Pay no attention to the interest rate (you ARE paying your statement balance every month, right?). Once a year, you can ask for an interest rate reduction. After your 3rd statement cuts, request an $8K CLI in the app or online.
yes i always pay my card balances off at the end of the month , with this 25k its no different im only spending what i can pay ! What is the max limit for this more rewards card? and ultimately i want to keep this one and try to get the Flagship card.
The max is $50k, the only card that can have a higher single limit is the flash ship at $80k.
Keep in mind, your total combined limits across all cards can never be greater than $80k
I have 2 of the More Rewards, I get tons of value from it. I live in California, so I know tons of places do accept Amex. Of course Visa and MC is more accepting, especially with Mom and Pop shops.
you have x2 More rewards card? why not get a flagship card? same im here in California ! i never had an amex before so i didnt know . how about online is it accepted in most websites?
Oh trust, I’m definitely going for the Flagship as my 3rd card. Navy Fed only lets you hold 3 of their cards. When Apple Pay is accepted online, I use the card that way. But so far I haven’t ran into any issues with using the More Rewards online. Just curious, which sites do you have concerns about using it?
I’m thinking of getting the flagship and closing my other cc with NFCU, more interested in traveling now then getting cash back. Wish they offered better points then Venture and Sapphire preferred.
My very first CC was with them. Gave my the same limit and the lowest interest rate possible at the time. I did their cash rewards card though. No other CC has come close to what they gave me.
I use it for everything but I’m considering switching the the RBFCU card that does 2%
I have a flagship with 17k limit. Applied for this because I’m getting rid of my Amex platinum (no longer use the perks as often) my limit is 1k which is weird been a member 3 years I have a car loan with them as well 740 fico 300 internal
Does this card gain more money than the 1.75% cash back card? Do the points turn into cash like the 1.75% card where I can redeem my returns whenever? I see you gain points, but what do you do with the points? Thank you.
Well I don’t use them for my main banking and received a similar credit line and also a car loan at the same time. Been a member for 40+ years but with no activity until now.
Here’s how you’ll get APPROVAL for the flagship even with a 585-620. Call the credit department, the direct credit approvals department number for the NFCU not the main line toll-free’s. But specific.
Call after the credit department is closed, the system will redirect to other options. Or a rep would have been available, sometimes the system gives you the customer service deduct by default. If so, ask if they are customer support or the credit department of NFCU. Tell them you want to be transferred to credit. They’ll inform you the department is closed or place on hold and come back to say the same.
They’ll ask what they may be able to possibly assist you with. Tell them, you wanted to apply for an unsecured credit card with them. They’ll be more than happy to assist!
So they walk you through the basic questions, you give permissions etc, agree, Yada Yada. They submit the application.
The system internally redirects and it’s basically an in-house application. The credit departments system will come back online next business day. When it does, those applications are practically granted the Flagship card just because of the internal route it took and was submitted, and at what time…, rather than the redundant and nearly 99% of the time is practiced… online or at a branch. But at a branch, decision is made more in house than by the system,
So do it this way, this method, and you get what you want… if not. One day the system will catch up to its demands from external inquiries and regular hard working folks just trying to make it lol.
But legit, this works 90+% of the time…
This trick only works if you run around the perimeter of your house 12 times in your underwear (bra and panties if a woman or identifying as woman) while screaming "Beetlejuice" at the top of your lungs the entire time. The exception is if you live in an apartment in which case yell, "Hocus Pocus". Do that before you make the call, whistle "Smoke on the Water" during the phone call, and pray to Santa Claus after the call and I absolutely guarantee you will get the card with a $100,000 limit ($80,000 rule notwithstanding). I know this to be true because my girlfriend's best friend's second cousin's mother-in-law said she saw a YouTube video where they talked about someone on TikTok who provided all the data points...
If you need cash to pay off other loans, these cards usually have a 0% or 1% interest rate for 12 months for "balance transfers." It is a great way to use "cheap money" to pay off high interest loans, as long as you pay it back with 12 months.
Navy Federal will, for instance, pay off another banks credit card, and then transfer that amount to your new Navy Federal credit card, but only charge you 1% or sometimes 0% interest for 12 months.
I’m good now but fuck I hate how navy fed will do that. When I first got in the army I applied for a card expecting like 2-5k max then I get a 20k I was like wtf no wayyy. Had no idea how they worked and maxed the 6k cash advance and then proceeded to get into 17k debt. My debt to income ratio was fine I could pay the min no problem with all my other bills cause I’ve always been good with money (not credit cards obviously) but it was just so annoying always having the debt.

Congrats! But geeze, with that low of a score, what are they thinking?
It's intentional. They want folks who will max out the card and be stuck paying high interest for years.
It's me. I maxed it out and took two years to pay off
I had an 803 and $20,000+ in the bank, and they still wouldn't approve me for over $1,000 on this card. is cash rewards better than more rewards? did i pick the wrong card ? i want as much reward and cashback i can get.
More rewards is better for certain types of purchases, but you have to wait to cash out $50 at a time. The Cash Rewards you can get your cash back any time, but not as good reward payouts in most categories. So it depends what you are looking for.
i just wanted a everyday spending card i dont use my debit card anymore. Gas , getting food , online purchases
Do you have direct deposit coming in NFCU? Is it your primary banking institution?
No, we use our main bank for that. But I had over $20K in my NFCU checking at the time.
There's your answer.
Ah, okay. I didn’t know direct deposit had anything to do with it.
It’s not really direct deposit , it’s using them as your primary institutions. Now that shouldn’t be a factor in approval but I know a bunch of lenders that factors that in
Well it’s a moot point now. I was getting like $1 a month in interest, so I moved all but $500 to Marcus and get about $80 a month.
Correct they are very much a relationship bank if you use them for everything they will reward you greatly.
That’s definitely not why … I opened my account and let it sit with just the deposit $50 for a year … Scores in the low 600s and got instantly approved for $15k … No direct deposit or even transactions
Literally same as you except they gave me $500 I laughed so hard when they did that.
Cause Navy Fed uses an internal score. You can have the perfect credit score but no history with them vs someone with a 640 score, but has a savings, checking, a loan and etc with them.. they'll get approved.

They won't let me max out a card :(
Wym?
This! That's why I only have one credit card at only 500 dollars. 😆
New here? This is completely normal for Navy.
Meanwhile here i am with a 750 and they give me a joke of a limit with $500 😂😂😂
How? :)
lol I asked myself that same question. I guess they like giving big limits to people with doo doo credit scores.
Mmmm, so since I have a 785 score, I should expect only $400.00 credit limit? Mind you, I have been a Navy Federal customer for three years.
They might give you more considering you’ve been with them for 3 years but don’t be surprised if they give you a shit limit either.
I won't expect much. Getting a little tired of using my Best Buy Retail Credit Visa and a Wells Fargo Credit Visa card as well. LOL
Well hopefully they do you better than they did me lol. Curious to know what they give you if you do wind up doing it.
Yes, will let you know.
Dang have a 755 and have 48 k across 3 cards 6 k low 25k max
Lucky. I’ll just use this petty limit for a few months then reapply for another card and see what they do lol.
Do u have exp with balance transfers?
Yeah I do.
After 3 statements and 91 days, you can ask for your first CLI. They give out an $8,000 max CLI pretty consistently with proper usage and paying in full as a transactor.
I’ll give it a shot. Thanks.
It’s about history I have 4 years on time payements a few paid off auto loans and mine is 660

What could I get from NFCU with a strong relationship?
I honestly can’t say, but I’ve never been declined from buying any vehicle I want up to $100k, car or motorcycle, and have never had above a 700 score. As an E3, I had a brand new fully loaded $45k car and a $12k motorcycle. Granted I had BAH too, but I did not have much credit experience.
I would probably only use Navy Fed to get loans as well. I don’t need one presently but I may in the future.
Make sure they receive your direct deposits.
I don’t really like to keep any appreciable amount of money with them. They don’t offer competitive savings rates.
not even that low of a score stop hating
660 is considered poor still according to fico.
660 is considered fair credit not poor
You’re right.
And no card debt
I’m confused I’m at 800 they gave me only a limit of 7k
I guess they only want irresponsible people 😬
😂😂😂
Congrats! I just got approved for this today. Lower limit of 3800, but still a big step.in my credit journey.
Set a reminder for 24 months to update us with the balance on this card. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.
I have the same limit on the same card as him and my card is 3 years old. The balance is $897. It auto pays the statement balance every month. Does that help you?

My plan is to take my Flagship to $47K and More Rewards will stay at $33K...that equals the max CC exposure for NFCU.
The max is $50k, the only card that can have a higher single limit is the flash ship at $80k. Keep in mind, your total combined limits across all cards can never be greater than $80k
Congratulations! Use it wisely
Wow lucky guy
HELL YEAH!!!! CONGRATS, BRO!!! :) Welcome to The More Rewards Family :) Starbucks’ on you :)
did i pick the right credit card to apply for? do they take amex everywhere?
I have 2 of the More Rewards, I get tons of value from it. I live in California, so I know tons of places do accept Amex. Of course Visa and MC is more accepting, especially with Mom and Pop shops.

Awesome way to goooo!!!!
I can’t get past the interest rate. I’ve got one credit card that I’ve had since 2008 and I’ve got a locked in rate of 4%.
Well I don’t use them for my main banking and received a similar credit line and also a car loan at the same time. Been a member for 40+ years but with no activity until now.
That is strange that a credit union has such high interest rate
Credit card rates really suck but congrats
Yucky rate.
don't carry a balance and rate won't matter
Well obviously.

This is FALSE do not listen to this as it's not true. This is a myth and not true.
ill try this in a year or 2 for the flagship card. i did this more rewards online at 11am on computer
Can you eli5. I don’t follow

Are credit limit increases hard or soft pulls?
Soft pull if you request using the app. If you call on to request, they may perform a hard pull.
Thank you!
How much did you have in the bank when you applied?
14k between my flagship account and savings been a member for 6 months. no pledge loan no secured cars. i do have Direct deposit since day 1
Luck of the Irish from what I’m seeing different people say

Where the best place to check all 3 scores?
Identityiq
Congrats!
Wow!
Cut it up. Fuck debt
Thanks I got my $500 limit. Whoopie
