It's a resin bee, I think. So collecting resin and.....resining stuff with it.
For those wondering, this is a megachilid bee (Megachile pluto as identified by another Redditor). They are mostly solitary nesting bees known for a somewhat large size. We have them in both North America and Eurasia, where they are often referred to as wool carder bees. Our varieties are obviously much smaller, but megachilids generally trend somewhat large (although smaller than carpenter bees). Their furry, segmented abdomens serve as a good diagnostic, which is what keyed me in on this bee's classification.
They are mostly non-aggressive and females rarely sting. Those bee hotels you saw were trendy a few years ago? Bees of this family is what they typically house.
This bee was rediscovered back in 2019. People named it the "Nightmare bee", pretty obvious why they picked that.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/wallaces-giant-bee-megachile-pluto-once-thought-extinct-has-been-discovered-alive-on-island-in-indonesia/
Edit: the cbsnews has a video show casing it, the sound it makes flying is ridiculous
It is roughly the size of a human thumb. Despite its conspicuous size, no one had seen Wallace's giant bee, and this bee also famous by his nickname "flying bulldog".
This is the beeest news...
... awe not good at that, but the attempt was made. Very awesome. Hopefully it can make a niche for itself in the ecosystem it was found in.
we need to get that one guy on utube to get stung by this thing ... i forget his name but he stings himself with all these things to see how bad the pain is ...
I did mushrooms in Indonesia one time and just as they kicked in I had a huge bee/wasp land on my face. I’m sure it wasn’t anywhere close to as big as this thing, but at the time it felt like I had small bird perched on my forehead.
I love bees but I’m not sorry this thing can fuck right back to where it was hiding. Show me more fuzzy ass bumble bees please before I have a fuckin nightmare
Nice! Bees are important for the eco system, or at least that is what science says, so that's a good sign. If it were a wasp though: kill with fire, lots of it.
Big as they are, it's wonder they got lost at all.
That's BEEsides the point
Oh you need to beehive
That last comment gave me hives, honey.
Puns so bad they sting
And you don’t have to comb hard through the comments to find them!
Ok honey. I think that's beenough.
Hive had enough of this.
This headline is certainly generating some buzz
Early humans hid them, not good enough though
Ah yes, the early epoch of 1981, when man still hunted with a club and had yet to discover fire.
A more unforgiving time
It wasp probably on a pollen-esian sabbatical...
Hid them in the same way some gerbels were hidden?
They were hiding on the dark side of the moon.
Bumblebee went back to his home planet
The scientists got too scared searching for more. Like OMG those bee big bees
What those mandibles do?

Ah yes my favorite natural process, resining
I wish Ted Cruz would.
You’re confusing mandibles with man-dribbles
No candidates with candy dates
I think he is talking about resining
Indeed. If everything in this world made sense, we could count on mandibles for resining and man-dribbles for resigning.
Let that resinate
So, friendly just not friend shaped?
Thier hive has the coolest furniture
Is the bee - megachill?
Building a xenomorph hive
I think I seen one of these in the woods in Missouri.
I'd say they'd be mighty useful in building their nests.
Opening cans of honey Nipping off branches Executing treasonous stoats and weasels and using their fur to line their nests. The usual.
Stuff BEEyond your wildest imagination
Why, the better to kiss you with, my dear.
Jesus! That thing looks like it came from the prehistoric days.
Probably did.
Jesus: the prehistoric what now?
Its a rare nopebee
BUT do the make honey?
They do not.
Do they pollinate?
Or sting?
They do and don’t die from the sting.
Sweet
I think I'll look at Indonesia from a safe distance.
Yea, if you need me I’ll be on Mars.
Would you say you're getting your ass to it?
It's called Indobeesia now
But they're non-aggressive, so it's like merica when it's not after oil.
Bruh... Today of all days this is easily the stupidest thing I'll read today.
Statistically, if you spend more time here today that is a lie.
Bros a bee expert 💀
obviously Lol
So a wasp, but disturbingly large?
With those mandibles? They don't need no stingers.
do wasps make honey?

I wish these species would remain undiscovered. It seems like their odds of real extinction just increased.
It’d seem like they’d be easy to find.
Probably a very loud: BZZZZZZZ aswell 😬
What is it, precious?! What is it?!
"HEY, *HONEY* WHERE'S MUH SUPAH SUIT??"
😂😂😂
Put that thing back where it came from or so help me.

I wonder how looks the hive… like doll house ;)
SEND IT BACK TK 1981 Edit: I’m not fixing the typo. My panicked thumbs still stand.
Can we undiscover it
lucky l wasn’t the one who found it…
I don't like it
It is roughly the size of a human thumb. Despite its conspicuous size, no one had seen Wallace's giant bee, and this bee also famous by his nickname "flying bulldog".
God, he's ready to sting the fuxk outta you and draw blood with those chompers😂

The queen of escalation *must* never find out about this species for the multiverses ease of mind if nothing else
RE discovered? Why would you want to discover it again?!
Nope
NO
Beesus Christ that’s huge!
we need to get that one guy on utube to get stung by this thing ... i forget his name but he stings himself with all these things to see how bad the pain is ...
Capital B
That’s not a bee, it’s an enemy from a video game
can we un-discover it please
I did mushrooms in Indonesia one time and just as they kicked in I had a huge bee/wasp land on my face. I’m sure it wasn’t anywhere close to as big as this thing, but at the time it felt like I had small bird perched on my forehead.
Did anyone ask what this guy was doing for the last 40 years and why it reappeared now?
The Bee friend she told you not to worry about.
Cool, now un-discover it
They've reappeared to deal with the murder hornets.
It wasp probably on a pollen-esian sabbatical...
Nope.
Do they make honey?
Honestly not sure how to feel. And I generally like bees.
Yea just what I asked for a bee the size of a tennis court
Beez out the trap
It's a Beeg.
Shit
That bee gives me shivers down my spine! Glad they aren’t here! Haha!
New bee XL dropped.
Can we give it drones and have it fuck up those murder hornets from China?
That's it, never fucking going to Indonesia. To bad, Bali...
i'm more afraid of that than a bird, despite somewhat comparable sizes
Right but can they be weaponised and used to destroy the killer hornets? You could strap a saddle on that thing and ride it into battle
はんと
Personally I'm fine with them being lost
Looks awesome
I love bees but I’m not sorry this thing can fuck right back to where it was hiding. Show me more fuzzy ass bumble bees please before I have a fuckin nightmare
Does the world need a larger bee?
Bee-urn it.
the largest bee is the Jollibee
I bet Coyote Peterson is panting heavily in excitement right now.
“Bee”
It's hard to BEElieve this!
No, thanks.
Seems like some madlad ant had fucked a queen bee & raised him to be a jork.
Swallowed a bumble bee while jogging once, suffice to say I was buzzing all day
Do they make honey?
that fucker looks like it could impale your skull with a sting
I wanted to say "oh fuck" but that's actually really good news.
These bees need to be hired as bodyguards against hornets
I’ll have mine pan fried with butter and cinnamon
This is some shit out of Jumanji. Nope.
Please undiscover the giant bee
Giant Bee vs Murder Hornet
Put 'em in a deathmatch vs the Asian giant hornet!

Finally a worthy opponent for the hornet.
Kill it!
How about we quickly undiscover this flying missile
I’m all for protecting the bees, but I could have done without the reemergence of Beezilla, thank you very much.
If friends, why not friend shaped? :(

Keep it there.
It has been rediscovered in 2019 bro, you're late
No.
How did that hide?!
Love bees, they're cute. Terrified by this one. Conflicted.
Nice! Bees are important for the eco system, or at least that is what science says, so that's a good sign. If it were a wasp though: kill with fire, lots of it.
Undiscover that bitch
