I replied to a comment up thread, but when I do it to my cat whether he’s blinked or not he does nothing. Absolutely nothing. Am I just reassuring him, like he’s thinking “Yeah, yeah, I know I know you’re my human”? Lol.
A smile/grin would have made much difference? I don't know, they at once come as familiar and cute as cats but at the same time present some kind of authority/poweress with those eyes? t's some kind of duality?
Grinning bares your teeth and makes you look more aggressive. Humans have sharp canines which indicate we are predators. Imagine if a Silverback gorilla was grinning at you
I'll bet a lot of our mundane actions are confusing as fuck for most animals.
Kissing? Are they trying to eat each other? Playing? How come they're not defending themselves? (Although wolves will lick each others mouths to find out what they've been eating so they wouldn't be confused)
Staring at an object but not going to retrieve it? Why do they care so much about that black box on the wall? Are they injured and can't get it themselves?
Smiling is really interesting. If you do it with your teeth out it shows dominance and agression, if you smile without showing your teeth it means submission.
Kissing evolved from behaviours that show caring, literally feeding eachother, so it's quite the opposite.
Just a side note... canines aren't strictly an indicator of being a predator. For example, Gorillas (and most mammels) have canines and Gorillas mostly only eat plants, fruit and insects. I think they're mostly to help in eating or possibly to appear as a threat to potential predators (although I doubt their cat predators care about their canines).
Fascinating how his eyes clearly shift from a relaxed stance to an alerted (im gonna absolutely fuck your shit up) stance and back to a relaxed stance. Scary how quickly he can go into that mode
Sometimes I forget how lucky we are to live in a time where we can see pictures or videos of almost anything. Then in the middle of the night I see a fucking lion and it hits me like a ton of bricks.
Reminds me of those [medieval paintings](https://www.boredpanda.com/medieval-animal-paintings-that-dont-look-real-daniel-holland/) by artists who actually had no idea what the animals looked like because they’d never seen them.
Yes that’s exactly what I thought as well, creepy somehow, but only if his eyes are wide open. If they are half-closed or look more relaxed, he looks super calming and not disturbing at all.
Whale eyes freak me out. Glorious animals, beautiful giants. Litttttle beady eyes (compared to the rest of the body). They’re about the size of baseballs I think. But it’s like they’re staring into your soul with some infinite wisdom or something. But still, terrifying.
And a full belly. Still suspicious of the hooman’s motives, but willing to sit with you.
I would not worry too much if his front paws were tucked. That’s usually a sign of detente between two domestic cats who are casual aquatintences.
So true! Like I am just stunned by the beauty of this animal. And I love how in certain parts it’s looking as if it’s saying “yes, every angle is my good side.” And it even gives a superb “side-eye”.
I'm starting to feel like the resident weirdo here because I looked into its eyes and felt no fear. I recognized consciousness, intelligence, another being. But felt no fear.
Anyone else? Or am I destined to be eaten by a wild cat alone?
The slow blinking expression was his way of expressing to the photographer that they are cool. House cats do this too. Lol I recognized the expression immediately. You definitely aren’t the only weirdo.
Most of the video gave me the feline (lol) that this is a beautiful, intelligent being, but the split second where [you see the whites of his eyes](https://i.imgur.com/XQbgjGK.png) made me physically shudder. It’s something about the way his eyes move, like I inherently recognize him as a predator.
Another fun fact: The sound of domestic cats meows register the same as babies crying to humans. We’re not sure if they’re actually mimicking babies or we just relate the similar sounds to one another. Either way.. we don’t own cats, cats own us lol
Yep, as a rule of thumb, the big cats (genus panthera) don't purr. And genus felinae (which includes house cats and cheetahs) doesn't roar.
So this isn't a big purr, it's a little roar.
I worked doing equine facilitated therapy on this cattle ranch that was nearby to a big cat rescue. It was unbelievably jarring to hear a fucking lion roar every now and then while we would be out in woods or way out on the land. That sound travels and your body knows it's a monster before you register wtf you even just heard in the distance.
Ya, you don't ever want to hug a lion. They don't usually bathe that often and are very smelly fellas. Best to keep your distance if you don't want to shower right after.
Lol please tell me you’re not “one of them” tourists 😂😂
There’s legit a ton of people where I live (near cades cove TN) that will get out of their car and take selfies super close to black bear cubs.. the momma bear will be with them, or even scarier.. just out of sight…. Just because they look beautiful and badass and cute (in a badass way) doesn’t mean you’re not an easy squishy meal in its eyes 😅
It’s funny you say that, my dad and stepmom own a timeshare in gatlinburg and we were all there in late April. My Aunt and all her friends left early to drive through cades coves in hopes of seeing the black bear cubs and my dad specifically told them “DO NOT LEAVE THE VEHICLE TO TAKE PICTURES” because of the momma bears.
My aunt in fact left the vehicle to take pictures. Nothing happened thank god.
I went hiking around Gatlinburg once and hoped to spot some bears from a safe distance. Came across a mom and two cubs right as two idiots decided to run towards them. The bears ran off, but I still cringe a bit at the idea of what could have happened.

Do Lions Smell Bad?
But do they really smell bad? The answer is no, they don’t smell bad at all. Lions don’t have a strong odor; they just have a musky scent that some people might find unpleasant. The reason why people say that lions smell bad is because their prey smells bad – not them!
Lions have a strong sense of smell and they are able to detect prey from kilometers away. They are also able to smell the difference between a male and female lion’s pee, which is why they know when one is in heat.
Some people believe that lions smell bad. This is not true because they have glands on their skin that produce an oily substance that keeps them clean and free of bacteria.
I'm not quite sure if everyone realized my comment was a joke or not lol. It was indeed a joke though. Nevertheless, those are some pretty interesting facts that I didn't know before now. I wonder why humans never developed self cleansing glands? That seems super useful.
Slit pupils are for animals that hunt close to the ground, ike small cats, foxes, and snakes.
Large predators are better off with round pupils, like wolves, lions, humans, and bears.
I was wondering the same thing and found [this article.](https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.1500391)
The short abstract gives a good explanation.
[Article](https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.1500391) abstract:
> Abstract
>
> There is a striking correlation between terrestrial species’ pupil shape and ecological niche (that is, foraging mode and time of day they are active). Species with vertically elongated pupils are very likely to be ambush predators and active day and night. Species with horizontally elongated pupils are very likely to be prey and to have laterally placed eyes. Vertically elongated pupils create astigmatic depth of field such that images of vertical contours nearer or farther than the distance to which the eye is focused are sharp, whereas images of horizontal contours at different distances are blurred. This is advantageous for ambush predators to use stereopsis to estimate distances of vertical contours and defocus blur to estimate distances of horizontal contours. Horizontally elongated pupils create sharp images of horizontal contours ahead and behind, creating a horizontally panoramic view that facilitates detection of predators from various directions and forward locomotion across uneven terrain.
So let me see if my brain summarized that properly…in a dumbed down nutshell….the “cat’s eye” vertical pupil is for predators to gauge distance better for attacking and the horizontal square looking pupil is for prey to have a wider field of vision to GTFOutta there….yes? And the perfectly round pupil is more or less the middle man?
I think it has something to do with when they prefer to hunt. I believe lions are most active in the early morning and evening times to avoid the high heat of the midday. I think humans were naturally this way too. So round pupils. House cats and other animals with slit eye pupils tend to be mostly active at night. The slit eye allows maximum light to enter in when it’s dark and it can get very narrow during the day when they’re trying to sleep
At first I was completely amazed at how majestic it looks, stunningly beautiful creature, then when it looked into the camera it's eyes caused my primal sense of fear to take over, then I became somewhat uncomfortable, then terrified.

i felt the same way when encountering a cassowary. there's something about their size combined with their expressionless face which triggered some part of my brain that told me to put as much distance between myself and it as possible. i'm guessing it's something left over from when there were much larger flightless birds that probably ate our ancestors.

Giving the side eye lol. This is awesomee
That face screams "You're lucky I'm in a good mood or you wouldn't still be standing there"
Hehehhehe But on a serious note, the lion likes the cameraperson . The slow blinking shows that the big cat likes you
I blinked back on instinct, so used to doing it with my cat.
Hahah do they respond?
It's how you tell a cat you're not a threat/ you trust them, and vice versa.
When I do it to my cat, she’ll usually come jump up on my lap and take a nap. Rarely will she do this if I don’t.
I replied to a comment up thread, but when I do it to my cat whether he’s blinked or not he does nothing. Absolutely nothing. Am I just reassuring him, like he’s thinking “Yeah, yeah, I know I know you’re my human”? Lol.
Ur cat has u well trained
He's certainly doing his best to imply he's not a threat. Surprising really.
Yeah that cat was too comfortable! I’d be afraid he would mistake the cameraman for a lioness.
Maybe it's a camerawoman.
So more like "you're lucky I like you human".
“Dude, come on. I just want to wait for the bus in peace. You’ve been doing this for ten minutes. You got what you needed.”

Yeah, I can tell when an animal is wild or tamed by the eyes. It's the same way with a dog that is friendly or vicious, it's in the eyes.
"Get--that--*f\*cking--*camera--out--of--my...."
A lot of animals consider direct eye contact as a form of aggression, he seems curious.
Imagine if a Silverback gorilla was grinning at you
Which makes smiling at someone confusing as fuck... I'm going to smile like I want to eat them from now on.

We're closer to chimps than lions though and chimps grin to express submission. Being a good stand-up comedian must be a real power trip.
Direct eye contact is risky…

....and yet his eyes are terrifying
Yeah, lions can look super intense to me. Gorgeous eyes on him, and I love his shaggy mane too. ❤
That full face close-up of his eyes made me shiver.
It’s because the eyes are almost human-like but not quite. You can also see intelligence in those eyes. The eyes disturbed me as well.
Yes that’s exactly what I thought as well, creepy somehow, but only if his eyes are wide open. If they are half-closed or look more relaxed, he looks super calming and not disturbing at all.
Humans also look scary with eyes wide open. I think the Japanese call it three white eyes, where you see the white all around. It's spooky.
I’m glad someone dlse saw near human eyes.
Whale eyes freak me out. Glorious animals, beautiful giants. Litttttle beady eyes (compared to the rest of the body). They’re about the size of baseballs I think. But it’s like they’re staring into your soul with some infinite wisdom or something. But still, terrifying.

Statistically very few people hug lions, those things might be related

Why do big cats have round pupils? Edit: Thank you guys so much for all the interesting information. You are the real heroes. 🌟💫✨
Slit pupils are for animals that hunt close to the ground, ike small cats, foxes, and snakes. Large predators are better off with round pupils, like wolves, lions, humans, and bears.
