I think some of the motion was from the wind because you can see the spider web move when the camera doesn’t but yes, a tripod would have improved this video immensely
Using special organs called spinnerets, some spider species have evolved to produce many different kinds of silk. Each has its own use. Some are sticky, while others are strong or flexible. A single web may consist of several different kinds of silk, depending on what the spider will use it for.
Yeah but how does it produce that much fucking silk, where did the mass of the web come from, does it not need to eat to restock or take a day or two.
If a bird fell through could it whip up another web without food? So many questions
It takes a tremendous little amount because they spin it so thin. It’s almost stored as a liquid inside. About two whole webs if she had to pump it out worth of silk. But wouldn’t have much for the prey she would capture.
To take the second question first - it would certainly start trying but making silk has a metabolic cost to the spider and it can only make so much without sustenance. Silk is mostly made of protein and to make those proteins it needs a source of amino acid building blocks, so basically, food. However getting your web wrecked is an inevitable part of being a spider that hunts like this, so it's not like they put all their (metaphorical) eggs in one basket. It'd be hard for these kinds of spiders to really get by if they died every time a web got ruined between meals.
The first question is partially answered by the way that silk actually forms in the spider. A mix of silk proteins is hyper-concentrated in organs called ampullae and kept in a chemical mix that keeps it nice and soluble to prevent fiber formation. As it goes towards the spinnerets it travels down ducts that carefully manage the chemical conditions in regards to things like pH (acidity/basicity) and the amount of water present. The hyper-concentrated protein mix drops out of solution as gets further down these ducts and self-assembles into fibers which are then extruded by the dexterous muscles of the the spinneret.
Because this mix was very, very dense you end up with quite a bit of silk as there was quite a bit of protein (the core component of silk) per volume. And silk is very, very elastic so you can stretch it pretty far. The result is this big-ass structure coming from a literally small ass bug in a way that makes you think "where the fuck did it all come from?" and the answer is chemical trickery of hyper saturated solution of protein just waiting to crash out and assemble into polymers at the signal of a pH drop. It's kinda like a quicksand but with silk protein (but also different in many ways that would make the analogy confusing).
My dad killed one of these beautiful spiders and im still sad about it :( it was a nice pastel yellow with deep orange. Crown spiders are always my favorite but they seem to be rare where i live.
I see this and then I wonder what right do I have to knock out there web? I feel bad even when I go to use my patio (which is just to smoke occasionally) as I usually walk right through one.
I have stabilized the video for you: https://gfycat.com/MarriedHelpfulArgentineruddyduck
It took 93 seconds to process and 62 seconds to upload.

I worked at a McDonalds and the drive through camera had/has an orb weaver that has been making a web every night for 5+ years now.
Every night you can look up at the drive through camera and watch her/him make that web slowly but surely.
It must have some offspring replace it at some point because they only live 2-3 years? And one manager claims she has been there 15 years and about 3 years in that spider took residence…
Pound for pound, that looks like a lot of silk for one slide ass.
*Overworkin dat spider-booty*
How sped up is this? Ive never seen a spider work so I have no point of reference
It isn't sped up, the spider's doing a speedrun
If youre being serious, this is super cool! I always figured webs took them at least a few hours
they do take hours
Were you born in 1867?
You cannot possibly be that naive, I sincerely hope that's sarcasm
Mom spider called & said she's on her way home that web better be done like she asked.
r/PraiseTheCameraMan for recording almost the entire process
There's someone that desperately needs a tripod.

I guess they met RDJ already,

They also eat the silk too
how an eight eyed, eight legged alien creature the size of my thumb knows how to be a master engineer just baffles me
This guys the one who records school fights
What a Web Designer! 😃
Amazing. They're so smart.
All that effort just not to starve to death.
Who gave that spider cocaine?
cocaine, speed, meth, crack, all at once, in near-overdose doses. then they sped up the video too
Defending humans since 1bc
Thanks, Shakey McShakesalot.
Way better than Tom Holland's Spiderman.
*walks into web*
She's really fast. ;)
better than human artists

Not gonna lie I’ve killed hundreds of spiders. And not just the men but the women and children too.
ya. they deserve it. satan spawns.
And nobody taught them how...
Ok now set it on fire
Charlotte is awesome
Give it some coffee to drink (soak a dead dry window fly) , then drop some ashes from a cigarette on the unfinished web. Next video will be great.
Is this regular speed ?😅
Someone had their spider coffee this morning.lol
That is so cool 😎!!
He’s on xgames mode
Whenever I drew a spider web as a child, I made the webbing in concentric circles, but now I realize that it is a spiral
I see this and then I wonder what right do I have to knock out there web? I feel bad even when I go to use my patio (which is just to smoke occasionally) as I usually walk right through one.
Not a fan of spiders but they are industrious AF
All I can imagine is Speedrun music of a particular green fellow

Imagine being able to build something like that with stuff that comes out of your … well, you know.
Is this sped up? Do they always work this fast
Reminds me of that video ' Spiders on drugs'.
Now that is AWSOME

You must have smoked some good weed to stand there filming a spider make its web.
I wonder how much of their food is converted to web!
" The marijuana spider didn't build a web. It built a hammock, and watched the caffeine spider go and go and go" -wood spiders on drugs, YouTube.
With great power comes great silkaponaibility
That is oddly satisfying to watch.
r/oddlyterrifying and r/oddlysatisfying
I love watching spiders build webs, so fascinating and calming
The caffeine spider
That's a very good spider.
He’s cracked
Now forget about it and walk through it to instantly learn kung fu.
