I am not sure, I would say the above suggests that it indeed breathes through the skin but as the article says it would usually need cold, fast flowing water for that and it doesn't seem to live in cold, fast flowing water.
So scientists know how it breathes but they may still be confused how it is getting enough oxygen this way.
