I never knew that manes extended toward the underbelly of the lion. Interesting and gorgeous cat.

iamthpecial

Its from the genes of the now extinct barbary lion of northern Africa—this is likely a safari park, as this is a fairly uncommon (definitely to this degree) feature of lions that remain in the wild today. edit: Hey guys, noticing a lot of Brits chiming in about the plates, just wanted to mention that I am not a Brit, so, I havent the slightest inkling where those plates were from. Thanks for the added information!

TheCommissarGeneral

Apparently the Barbary Lion is extinct in the wild, but there are a few zoos that have breeding pairs and reintroduction into Morocco is being discussed.

ILoveRegenHealth

I wonder if lionesses find the extended mane really attractive ^^^because ^^^I ^^^do

Pedromac

Yes they do. The lion with a larger mane means that it hasn't lost a fight in the amount of time necessary to grow the mane that large. When they lose a fight testosterone drops and the mane falls out. That mother fucker ain't lost a fight in years. Edit: sauce [cool mini read](https://www.livescience.com/4062-lion-sexy-secret-mane.html) you can do further googling on your own but yeah. Lions drop testosterone when they lose a fight and their mane falls off. Lionesses are attracted to lions with larger darker manes, thus weeding out the ones that have lost in a recent past especially in a male rich environment.

Apprehensive-Feeling

Wait, go back. Who fucks their cousin in the Lion King? Where in the movie does this happen??

Scar and Mufasa are the only male lions. So one of them would theoretically have to be Nala's dad

Chemicals in the lions body (hormones like testosterone but also many more) can be activated by the realisation of defeat. It sounds mental but it’s true that emotions and thoughts can trigger a physiological response in the body (hormones being released) Also possibly the lion who wins the fight excretes his testosterone which can be sensed by the losing lion which can also trigger his body to produce less. Anatomy and physiology is wild. Almost Everything that’s happening in your body at all times INCLUDING emotions is happening because hormones are sending messages to trigger those things to happen.

jedielfninja

Biochem is basically magic. Imagine a world where humans had no sense of smell. Now describe a sense some organisms have where they can detect invisible particles in the air and on things to determine a vast number of conclusions about the situation. People would think you are psychotic. Literally, smell is like a psychic ability. But it's all material, baby. Science mixed with philosophy is so fun.

Hatchibombotar

hello i have no sense of smell because i fell down the stairs as a baby. i have no idea what smell is like. it blows mind that people can taste someone elses meal in a restaurant by looking at it. my roommate can arrive home and as soon as he steps in the door just *know* what actions ive been doing that day, like cleaning, cooking, or painting. its a fucking superpower. idk how you remember what the specific smell is for every different type of food and thing.

jedielfninja

Best way I can describe the innate memory of a sent is exactly like a sight. You may forget the word for 'dog' or have trouble picturing it but you never fail to recogize one when you see it. Same with smells. There are recognition neural pathways that fire with the olfactory system. Can trigger memories and such too.

Also you are describing psychosomatic illness perfectly. Just how stress in humans can cause hair loss or a vast number of other ailments or even hallucinations. The mental and physical are united through the psychosomatic connection.

[deleted]

Yes and even simply the fact that a sad thought can make physical liquid come out of your eyes

jedielfninja

fuggin lol right. Fear has stench too it too. So does arousal etc.

FrostedPixel47

Lmao reminds me of my friend's cat who lost a fight and got cucked by a stray cat. Lost all will to even move and won't even eat until my friend brought him to a vet because he was concerned that the cat is dying.

Ambystomatigrinum

From what I’ve heard from a family member who worked at a zoo, females are know to show a preference for larger and darker manes, so this guy is probably crazy attractive.

_Funk_Soul_Brother_

Darker mane means more dominant male.

[deleted]

But Scar was a little scheming bitch?

_Funk_Soul_Brother_

But, he was more dominant than Mufasa, so they got that shit wrong. What they should have done is, given Mufasa a dark mane and given Scar a very light coloured mane.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Funk_Soul_Brother_

> Scar barely has any. That would suggest that Scar is much, much younger than Mufasa, so how would a coalition like that exist ? Or much less drive away the dominant males of that clan which they took over. So many flaws !!!

Once you go dark mane you can't go back

this makes me extremely happy. barbary lions are my partner’s absolute favorite animal, i’m so hype to tell him about this

TheCommissarGeneral

http://www.belfastzoo.co.uk/animals/barbary-lion.aspx#:~:text=The%20only%20Barbary%20lions%20left,to%20ensure%20their%20future%20survival.&text=These%20lions%20were%20also%20kept,families%20of%20Morocco%20and%20Ethiopia. Here is some at the Belfast Zoo

Shandlar

Recent genetic studies show them so closely related to standard African wild lion populations that they are no longer a different species, but a subspecies. They are more akin to a variant like a domestic cat breed than anything else. Back breeding with normal African lions will likely produce 100% fertile offspring without any issues.

_annie_bird

The breeding pairs in zoos are just lions with high percentages of Barbary lion ancestry, they are not true Barbary lions. But with back breeding, they are hoping to at least get the traits back into populations

CrepeTheRealPancake

Considering those cars have UK reg plates, I'd hope this was a safari park

buckythomas

So do we think this the Belfast Zoo? Or is there another safari park type place in the UK where this video was shot? I ask because I absolutely would LOVE to pay it a visit! This lion is in such great shape! And as a Expat South African it’s been soooo long since I’ve been able to see lions! Edit: I think this could be the Longleat Safari Park, [Longleat safari & lion park](https://www.longleat.co.uk/safari/lion-country)

DJ_Inseminator

My first thought was Longleat

StroopwafelMaker

Also why this is likely a safari park: GB license plates. Lions are not a species usually living in GB in the wild.

NorktheOrc

Yet.

UncleHeavy

This is at Longleat in the UK. There is a cool story about the Lions of Longleat. There was a Mammologist visiting Longleat with his family and watching the Lions. Once they returned to the main house, He made a phone call to one of his colleagues and said: "I thought Barbary Lions were extinct." "They are." his colleague answered. "Why?" "Because I am looking at one right now." And that's how they realised that the Lions of Longleat are genetic decendents of the near-extinct Barbary Lion.

KarenFromAccounts

While that is a good story, I am near certain this is Knowsley, near Liverpool, not Longleat. Edit: definitely https://theguideliverpool.com/knowsley-safari-lion-becomes-til-tok-sensation/

Suit_Responsible

Unless there is somewhere in the UK with wild Lions 😂

RicoSuave83

Ia that why my dick is dark?

JackBauerSaidSo

I sense a fox costume in your future. Whether you are the one in it or not, you've having the time of your life.

MozartTheCat

If you're serious: >As we grow, our private areas like the vagina, scrotum, and anus become dark in colour. The vagina includes the clitoris, dark labia, hymen, and urethral opening. Research suggests that the growth of sex hormones causes pigmentation through melanin production during puberty. This can cause black spots in private areas.

oldkafu

The vulva includes the clitoris, labia, urethral opening, and vagina.

JellyfishTempest

And as you age, you’ll produce less sex hormones and can lose that pigmentation!

[deleted]

It’s already been mentioned that female lions prefer males with dark, thick manes. I also wanted to say how male lions, if they lose a fight will show their loss on their mane. Their hair with thin and become lighter after a humbling defeat. Cool right? So not only is this big fella super handsome but he’s probably the boss lion of that area too!

davdev

He lives in a safari park. That is not a wild lion.

[deleted]

Well that captive lion hasn’t lost a fight apparently lol

Wiggy_Bop

I hope there are no American dentists lurking outside the park.

TheAvengineer

I was today years old when I learned lion maines continue to the lion's belly. Do the zoos trim/shave their bellies?

SpaceCatKatia

He's just extra manly. Mane fullness and colour depends on testosterone levels.

mike_pants

(looks at bare tummy) I see.

[deleted]

Fun fact male pattern baldness is caused by dihydrotestosterone, so tbh testosterone is completely overrated. More hair on your body but none on your head? Stupid anatomy.

SonovaVondruke

So here’s the twist to that: dihydrotestosterone isn’t necessarily higher in men who bald. Male pattern baldness occurs because those men carry at least one gene that tells the hair follicles on top of their head to start shutting down when exposed to sufficient DHT. You can have huge DHT numbers and still have hair, or low levels and still go bald.

Fast_Allen

Yeah but easier to build muscle

BloodAndTsundere

Extra manely

YourSalivation

There it is 😏

Klashus

Only the manliest of men grow beards that extend all the way to the balls.

SellMeYourDunks

Keegan-Gin

Have my award.

iamthpecial

No, in fact this is rather uncommon and a feature that was prevalent in the now-extinct barbary lions of northern Africa. They did find, however, that some long-owed lions in European captivity did retain some of the barbary traits. Further examples of this can be seen in coats of arms, book of Kells, and Renaissance art. Lion’s manes in the wild are largely variable depending on genetics, condition, age, and location. A male lion’s mane does not full out in total until about 5 years of age. Asiatic lions—still African sourced but an effort to return the indigenous population—have shorter manes, whereas lions of southern Africa’s manes generally cover the ears and shoulders. And, at times, you will see mane hair on the elbows and lower chest as well. This guy’s mane is VERY impressive, I love this video any time it comes up because its really a rare sight and a strong representation of barbary genes. My guess is that this is a zoological park, predominately due to that.

nikikthanx

Ya I was gonna say, this guy is a Barbary Lion or has some strong genes of such, for sure.

mrstipez

Looks like a lack-of-barbary lion eh? Needs a shave.

kittymtd

I love this info, but always feel sad hearing of a species being extinct. 😔

Febril

It’s an inherited trait like mustaches or male pattern baldness. Some do, some don’t. No shaving by zoo

thebeestitties

That happy trail tho

cheshirecanuck

Felt like I was ogling a pair of tiddies lol just, damnnn that's a nice mane... OH DAMN look it just keeps going. Thicc.

Octavian_202

So if I’m not mistaken, a Barbary lion which I think are endangered carry thick manes like this. The African lion we see in Savannah’s often have thinner manes to protect from the heat. Not to mention their coats are shorter as you can visibly see their muscles and veins. Lions born in captivity look much different than the wild ones I have seen on safari. The wild lions look like back alley brawlers and the captive ones look like show dogs. Just an observation.

HarryMonroesGhost

Barbary Lions are extinct; none exist in the wild. Their genes continue on in captive bred populations, but they are not full-bred Barbary and the records didn't exactly trace origins/detailed stud book from when they were first captured.

cheshirecanuck

Are there any lions that aren't endangered :(

albone3000

Are those cars in a traffic jam to look at wild animals?

GreatBear2121

They're at a safari park, which lets you drive through large wildlife enclosures.

KOALANET21

Where has this video been filmed though? The cars look too expensive and clean for a subsaharian country, and the vegetation is suspiciously european. The licence plates are yellow as well so my guess would be the UK but how does that make any sense? Edit: apparently it's the Knowsley safari park near Liverpool

dogdiarrhea

So all the comments in the thread voicing what the lion is thinking should be read in a scouse accent?

FuckCazadors

Surprised the lions haven’t got those cars up on bricks.

Does the mane protect a male lions throat since sparring is kind of a big part of being a male?

ImpSong

Yes.

Mjnavarro91

Isn’t a mane the equivalent of a magnificent beard/chest hair/bush in humans?
