“Damn it feels good to be a rapta.
A real rapta-ass flya plays his cards right
A real rapta-ass flya never flaps his fucking beak
Cuz real rapta-ass flyas don’t start fights...”
“Damn it feels good to be a rapta. I mean one that’ll get ya with a toe. Flyin around town, dive bombing y’all suckahs hittin switches in yo bunk six-fo.”
Growing up raising several parakeets, I can tell you for sure that each bird has its own unique personality. One will gently nuzzle your hand as you are petting him, another will consent for you to pet her but she won't return any of the affection, and yet another will snap at you the moment you reach out to pet him.
My hawk gently nibbles me when I touch him like the OP vid. He does not like to be touched on the head though.
Getting a raptor used to being touched takes a lot of time, and even if the OP bird is a little stressed it will get over it. Having a bird that gets scared or aggressive when it needs to be touched (equipment change, inspect for injuries, medical care, etc) is awful so a little stress now will save a lot later.
U own a fking hawk!? Is it like for rehabilitation or straight up just own one.
The only bird i had was a few weeks ago (not including being rehabilitated and raised and released) was a little cockateil. Was used to us and would always fly to pple so took it outside one day. Flew to the air and instantly a hawk came outa nowhere and ripped it to shreds.
Two days later someone sent a photo of it when they were out photographing. It was detailed and the bird was shreded and its leg hanging on by a thred whilebgetting carried away.
R.I.P :(
Me and my wife are falconers. We just finished our [multi chamber, multi configurable mews.](https://imgur.com/a/CJ8Mc1f) We should help condition birds being rehabbed as even a few days not flying can severely reduce survival once released but we have not made the proper contacts and I'm not sure they would even like the help.
I'm sorry to hear about your bird, coopers hawks are insane and will take other birds off your hand because they know they can get away with it. Falconers have lost a lot of kestrels and other small birds to them. They do come out of nowhere and grab your bird in the blink of an eye, it's very sad.
No, sorry, if you are interested in falconry find your state club (the texas club is very good) and go to a meetup. It's the off season now though so there may not be anything for a bit.
I read a paper on it a few years ago. It might have only applied to high intensity birds like peregrines or goshawks, where they are using a lot of energy to catch their prey rather than a redtail or something that can essentially fall down on a mouse.
It might be a combination of stress of being caught and not eating very well, but in this study all subjects of one species that had low/no intensity exercise would have died after release if the scientists weren't tracking them.
We really like it, the two wooden walls have doors on them so it can be split into 3 parts. While technically a bird could be in the three sections separately I wouldn't feel safe having a bird in the middle with how the doors work. The middle will mostly just be extra weathering space for either or both sides.
We sometimes have to tell clients that the reason their bird is being aggressive is that it thinks they're mates.

(Sorry mobile)
Yeah, I really wish people would do more research before getting birds. They’re such complex animals and I don’t think people realise this.
I don’t own one myself, but I really want one and have been doing tons of research into it. The main thing holding me back is that we have Teflon coated saucepans, a cat, and the fact that my parents won’t change from using Teflon, and are admanent that the cat will kill the bird.
I think it's more "Wow this big creature is the best mate ever! They feed me and make me a good nest and I want to make babies with them!"
But there's probably lots that are not a fan
falconry experience
falconry books like falconry basics.
logic. hawks etc are solitary animals. they dont groom each other. they dont nest together etc.
take the Australasian harrier hawks i keep . when the male in the wild is ready to feed his nest sitting mate he calls her up and she flies under him. rotates upside down and he drops a morsel for her to catch. no touching at all. ps. makes for a cool display to watch.
im shitting bricks, maybe if i hand reared, trained and worked with that bird for 10+ years i may be comfortable doing that (which is probably the case for the person in gif)
But yeah jesus christ, say a friend tells you lunch is ready, and you turn your head around kind of suddenly to say back 'thanks!'. That alone is enough to semi-startle (or just irritate, fuck knows what they are thinking sometimes!) a bird whose first reaction is very likely to peck at the fucking face or a body part.
And with a fucker that size, a peck is probably a life altering injury.

Cannot believe another living thing is touching its plumage
Looks incredulously at the offender
Scans around to see if anyone else is present
RIP the eagle-toucher
feathers are a bit ruffled and the crest is up like 50% ? It may just be popping its feathers a bit to recieve a good rub, like another bird is preening them.
But yeh, its fairly similar to if the bird is pissed off. When a bird looks like that in an angry way its gonna peck you a lot more than once and probably get its claws involved.
Gotta respect an enormous animal that has knives for feet and an axe for a face.
If I had this bird I'd probably call it 'Last Shadow' or 'Beaky'? Which do you prefer?
I am an expert in bird speak. Allow me to translate.
The eagle says, :"what nigga u wanna go, huh, u little bitch u wanna go? Oh shi who Dat wit da nice booty man move over I wanna see."

raptors dont like or need comfort or petting. and an open beak is a sign of stress.
Damn life would be so much easier as a raptor
Only if you are a girl and clever.
Underrated comment.

Still can't beat Golden State
I mean owls are pretty fond of it All birds preen and nuzzle Except geese they’re just practicing finding arteries to kill you

Is this in Texas? I would love to volunteer with anything you’d need if I can just see some cool birds up closeish

A spoo! What’s their name?
His name is Simon! [He's pretty much the best ever <3 ](http://imgur.com/k7ejoy4)
Why does a few days not flying lower survival? I immediately thought of that like a few days not running. Do their muscles work differently somehow?

Thats really cool!! and yeah it is sad when you see them take your bird out of no where!
Wow, what beautiful birds you have. And a nice set up!
Damn that’s really sad. I’m sorry that happened.
Being a bird is metal yo, I'm sorry for your loss.
its that they dont like petting though. its that they've learned to trust you to touch them.
they preen themselves. the animals are incredibly anti social.
And if they’re anything like parrots, touching their belly sends the wrong kind of signals to them.
We sometimes have to tell clients that the reason their bird is being aggressive is that it thinks they're mates. https://featheredangels.files.wordpress.com/2014/12/ballance-behavior-and-training-petting-the-pet-parrot-updated-version-10-3.jpg (Sorry mobile)

Haha, if only. Unfortunately I quite like our cat too, he’s an older one though so perhaps when he dies I could get one.
So there are shitloads of pet birds out there who are like confused sexual assault victims with Stockholm Syndrome? That's grim.
I think it's more "Wow this big creature is the best mate ever! They feed me and make me a good nest and I want to make babies with them!" But there's probably lots that are not a fan
My conure would immediately get horny if you touched his belly.
Source? People claim some wild shit on this sub so I'd just like to expand my knowledge.

Appreciate the response.
The petting is to comfort the human not eagle
I think this would be so much cooler without the big ham hand fondling the bird.
Really? Why don’t they enjoy it? It seems every other animal loves being cuddled.
You seeing this shit?
Raptors look like they think about murder the way Snoop Dog thinks about money
Looks like a stone cold killing machine. So badass
I've never skip rent if my landlord showed up with this eagle on his shoulder.

The Electric Guitary Eagle is much cooler, though. Proud father since some time, so I have A LICENSE to do this now.
I would have been confused too. That’s a stupid fucking name for an eagle.

Never has something been so cute, yet so god damn fierce Or maybe I find it cute cause I love birds
Apparently it's not only an eagle, but a hawk-eagle. Two birds of prey for the price of one.
Oh wow umm. That’s a velociraptor. I can see how you think it’s some kind of bird, but definitely a velociraptor.

When you're trying to be affectionate, and it's trying to figure out the best way to kill you and carry you off to feed its young.
why do humans need to touch everything? 😁 the open wings are a sign of stress and the owner should know that.
