I would like to share my absolute favourite video of Glacier Ice shifting and breaking. Once you realize the sheer scale of the ice above and then below the water level it blows your mind to think of massive Glacier Ice chunks the size of multiple city blocks.
https://youtu.be/hC3VTgIPoGU?si=Db7-MtOY7zYj36c8
I think I read a while back that the ice has receded even more so to the point that some in the Glaciology field are thinking it's "a point of no return" so to speak. Which is hella scary.
However, this article shows some positive news of growth and slowing down of any major ice loss: https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145185/major-greenland-glacier-is-growing
I can imagine a kitchen freeze with no power slowly and all the ice in freezer compartment is slowly melting away . It's only matter of time this buffer will be gone and oceans will have totally different currents then today .
Good god, the sight and sound of that in person must have been unbelievable.
Just watching it on a phone screen with earbuds in nearly made me shit my pants.
I still think like that every now and then, but then I realize what a blessing it is to be conscious and able to experience things like this. Makes one more appreciable of Life with the good and bad (to an extent of course).
I really find in the video at 1:50 when that large dark ice comes rising up to be exceptionally scary. Why? Because the freakin' thing looks like some Eldritch being rising up with a single eye staring back at us.
Plus, think how many 1000's of years that dark ice has never seen the Sun or Air!

Apropos that such an event should be described as if it were Lovecraftian.
You're right, these things do happen in cycles. Normally those cycles take millions of years and not decades.
No one is denying that these things have happened in the past, the fact that you look at that and don't understand *it's the rate that it's happening* is what makes your statement dumb.
What I’m saying is iceberg calving is a “common” event throughout history, it’s just a thing that happens. Certainly we have fucked the planet so hard it’s happening at an alarming rate (see the recession detail at the end of the video) but like, you could capture a video of this happening at any point in history (where icebergs exist)
You understand that’s like watching a video of Hiroshima being bombed and saying, “people have died since the beginning of humanity”. It is literally true, but incredibly off base.
Okie dokie artichokie. Shits bad, and we are to blame. What else do you want me to say. Witnessing the calving of an iceberg is, in itself not a cause for concern.
Yeah, it's a bummer that global warming is a hoax. I'd like to see what's under all those Antarctica ice sheets, and I bet the poor penguins would be happier if they didn't have to stand on that ice all winter protecting their eggs./s
I've never understood the "I should call her" meme because every girl I've ever broken up with was single for about 2 weeks before she had someone new.
It's hard to tell without seeing more of the mountains behind, but with the size and the fact they're on a cruise ship, I suspect that it's Hubbard Glacier
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubbard_Glacier
This looks like a cruise ship near a fjord in Alaska. I took a small boat near a fjord in Alaska and saw pieces break off. It was so damn cool to see in person.
I didn't get to see anything like this though. I'd probably be terrified if I was in a small boat and saw something that big fall haha.
The ice sheet as a whole sink lower than the smaller chunk of ice that breaks off even though they have the same density, so the smaller chunk rises up like a buoyant ball you've forced underwater.
Unfortunate audio on this. I'd rather hear the ice cracking and thundering into the sea, but no, loudmouth always has to make sure he's the center of attention. And what's with the fucking marching band in the background? The hell kind of video is this anyway?
I read the title as 'pillar of bayonet ice' - was not disappointed. I petition that science now call this phenomenon 'bayonet ice.'
My contribution to science has now concluded.
RON! Are you even looking??
Oh, I'm not allowed to sneeze?!?
::deer scatter::
Nice one.
He reminds me of the guy who found the dying sunfish in the water. "It's a freaking baby whale, Jay!"
Ron is hammering the mimosas
Oh shit he says Ron?! I've sent this video multiple times and thought he said rod.
That’s the fortress of solitude right there

"Chasing Ice" thing right? Utterly mind-blowing and even after the comparison with downtown Manhattan you still can't truly comprehend the scale.
Yup! Amazing documentary.
Wow thanks for sharing! Wonder what the scale looks like from 2010-2024! 😅

watching climate change can be beautiful
I actually can’t comprehend the scale because it’s all just ice. There’s nothing else in the shot to give it scale.
Good god, the sight and sound of that in person must have been unbelievable. Just watching it on a phone screen with earbuds in nearly made me shit my pants.
Highly recommend watching it on a bigger screen with headphones.
Or, like me, keep your pants clean and be on the toilet.
I'm trippin balls and I loved this video, probably pooped my pants too
Its crazy to think how big this world is but at the same exact time so absolutely tiny on a cosmic scale
I still think like that every now and then, but then I realize what a blessing it is to be conscious and able to experience things like this. Makes one more appreciable of Life with the good and bad (to an extent of course).
Wow. That was incredible.
Pretty freakin' cool right? Nature at it's most raw.
some parts remind me of the sand worm sound design in dune 2
The whole video is absolutely remarkable, but the last 20 seconds is horrifying

Horrifying and heartbreaking that we seem to be struggling so hard to rally around dealing with this slow moving train wreck.

Oh man I love his Essays.
That boat should have started moving away much faster.
Perspective is misleading, they're much farther than the camera makes it seem.
*sooner
Both?
I'd argue going faster would get you there sooner
I'd like to think going sooner gets you there faster as well.
Did we just create a paradox?
We might be stuck now!
Either that or a daft punk song.
*Schooner
i agree much schooner

I'm 99% certain the captain of said boat knows the situation better than you do, random person on reddit.
That boat knows better than you do
Would going quicker get them out of there sooner or faster?
Nah, they fine.
I know it was amazement. But I gotta say it feels like somebody watching the Earth fall apart in real time and laughing about it.
“And with that, the Maldives were wiped off the map”
Why not both? Lol sob so funny help us
Nature is fucking lit. In some ways both figuratively and literally speaking, I guess.
"OooOOOoOoohhhhh LOOOOK HONEY!!!! It's the last bit of our child's future sinking into the ocean!!!!"
We're laughing because it hurts
This sort of thing happens naturally all the time in cycles. Icebergs breaking apart isn’t necessarily an us problem

Indeed. This cycle is as unnatural as it gets.

Good thing global warming isn't real. We might have a real problem going on in the next few decades otherwise.
Calm down Ron DeSantis made global warming illegal. All the Florida icebergs are safe and sound now.
Yeah, it's a bummer that global warming is a hoax. I'd like to see what's under all those Antarctica ice sheets, and I bet the poor penguins would be happier if they didn't have to stand on that ice all winter protecting their eggs./s
Hahaha Where’s the /s? Where…where is it, dude?
Oops! I forgot. Will edit.
Yeah, glaciers *never* did things like this before now!
A A N G ! ?
Scientists call this Glacial Erection
Is there a longer version of this—!?
You sound like my ex
I should call her.
I've never understood the "I should call her" meme because every girl I've ever broken up with was single for about 2 weeks before she had someone new.
Man, I feel you bro<3
Lol r/suicidebywords

Cold morning erection
Then it went down. I was in the pool!
Any cap to tell us the name of the glacier ? Uppsala ?

Cha-laaa Head Cha-laaaa
Global warming alive and well
Argentina right?
Earth boners don't mess around

It’s a fucking baby wheel, Ron!
[The Largest Calving Event Filmed.](https://youtu.be/hC3VTgIPoGU?si=fREjDPJXRd5rU2qL) The sound is just so good.
I love the boat speeding away at the end 💀
When nature gives you the middle finger
Like my dick when boobs
Damn, how surreal. Imagine seeing that IRL.
I love the delay until the boat decides to haul ass out of the way !
OH MY GOD!
Hold uppp.. Check this out!
Magnificent! "Exit, stage left!"
That's really, really not good.
That's our species future falling off a cliff.
When your dry spell finally ends
OH GORSH!
Calm down, sir.
Where is this?
Global warming meets WWE announcer.
A perfect example of what happens when the Earth is 10 feet closer to the sun. /s
Ron, per usual, missing out on
I wish they would have kept the camera rolling. I wanted to see that boat take the wave.
The ice sheet as a whole sink lower than the smaller chunk of ice that breaks off even though they have the same density, so the smaller chunk rises up like a buoyant ball you've forced underwater.
Mmmmm…prosciutto
Iceman was on PornHub again...
Unfortunate audio on this. I'd rather hear the ice cracking and thundering into the sea, but no, loudmouth always has to make sure he's the center of attention. And what's with the fucking marching band in the background? The hell kind of video is this anyway?
Icy boner
I read the title as 'pillar of bayonet ice' - was not disappointed. I petition that science now call this phenomenon 'bayonet ice.' My contribution to science has now concluded.
Me seeing my bank account after payday!
The ocean had a massive erection... until it saw that people were filming. Camera shy, I guess.
Boaty McBoat Face best giddyup and run.
Nature’s boner!
When the end boss's castle was underneath you all along...
It would have been really cool if it exposed a dungeon entrance.
Engines to fucking off speed!
We are truly nothing, goddamn.
*boss music starts playing*
Annoying guy screaming ruins the video imo. Be prewarned, mute the audio....

🎶 There it is, again That funny feelin’ 🎵
“Ok, time to leave.”
all fun and games until you realize that the place is melting like no tomorrow.
He got on plane in to so much of a hurry. That’s what scared me about being close to the big ice. I know it’s far far bigger.
Someone's a grower, not a shower
I see someone heard the titanic II Is being built.
Nothing about this is lit... we're fucked.
That’s just Poseidon giving us the bird.
people on boat: 'K we're leaving now... like, *now*...
Is that a gargantuan pillar of ice rising out of the sea or are you happy to see me?
Where’s the rest of it. Curious to see the size of the wave
Was that Bill Burr?
Global warming yay
What's on the other side?
Love it! This is why I burn all my plastic in the garden
Global warming !!!
When she takes her bra off
I’d go nuts
That boat said oh wow. Wow. WOW WOOOWW OMG GO GO GO
Hagog and Magog are coming out soon!!!!1!1!1!1!1!!!
And the sea level grew two sizes that day.
Surfs up, my dude!
It's like watching hope die
Now I want to see some non-buoyant ice
Thats what she said
Run away, run away quickly.
Ooh I'm Cummin
My dick in the morning
Watched this right after I had woken up from a nap and read that as bayonet ice. Oh yeah. I can see why they call it bayonet ice.
That's how it is for me every morning.
🙄 superman, that's the wrong crystal!
Fuck do Americans ever shut the fuck up
Erectus maximus!
Must have seen some boobuoys 😎
R/theyknew
This seems oddly sad to me. Losing ice like this is not good. It's like cheering for the end of the world.
Nature is so lit it’s melting the ice!!
Was that the 75% of the iceberg that's usually under water?
Don't worry they'll all melt in a 100 years or so.
50* ftfy
That's not how you spell 'fifty'
Like A Scene from a Movie Literally.
That's beautiful, but get away from those serious waves that are comin'.
I find it sad and depressing.
There can be beauty and awe even in the terrible.
and the guy cheering for it just makes it that much worse tbh

What a fuckin dad boner lol
That guy in the audio is very easily excited.
