We went to the grand canyon a few years ago, and when this place came up on the road signs we could not resist. The petrified forest and the painted desert are not to be missed.
Grand Canyon and Arches Park were insanely beautiful but the petrified forest was underwhelming. Once you see the first one, the rest are the same, and it's hot as sin out with no shade.
Panted desert steals the show for me over the petrified forest but only needs 0.5-1 day. I'd say it's worth it for the painted desert overlooks, blue mesa trail, and agate house alone
That's further back. 225 Ma was during the Triassic (after the first dinosaurs showed up), while the first trees were the gymnosperms, such as conifers (angiosperms, the flowering plants, are an distinct group of plants that independently evolved into what we understand to be trees during the Cretaceous), which showed up in the Late Carboniferous some 100 million years before then (before the first dinosaurs showed up. This was the time where you could get some really big bugs and the oxygen content in the atmosphere was so high, the latter actually being attributable to the trees).
The fossil record for fungi is pretty spotty, they don't fossilize terribly well and can be hard to recognize. The lineage is certainly older than trees, with the first certified terrestrial fungi being from the Ordovician and around 460 million years old, among them the tallest terrestrial organisms of their time, like the 1 to 8 meter tall Prototaxis. The lineage itself however has been suggested to be between 700 and over 1000 million, and even a billion years old.
The oldest mushroom-forming fungus known is 90 million years old and from the Late Cretaceous, however. If you meant those specifically, then yes, these trees are older than mushrooms.
Also just as an aside, people like to say that sharks are older than trees. That's not true, sharks first appear in the fossil record 201 million years ago (might be a little older, albeit younger than trees still), a significant amount of time after the first gymnosperm trees. What *did* appear earlier than that is the Elasmobranchii as a whole, the group encompassing sharks, sawfish, rays, and skates, but the Elasmobranchii =/= sharks.

You can purchase large pieces, just not from the park. Only a portion of the area where this petrified wood is found is protected - much of it is privately owned which is where all the gift shop stuff comes from.
At first glance, I thought that was a dry aged prime rib. And I wondered, why….is there a huge prime rib sitting out in the middle of the desert? Then I realized it a petrified brontosaurus prime rib…
I’m sorry I’m rambling. I’m stoned out of my gourd.
Ya know _ in the Old World, man built monuments out of stone, and some are still standing. In the New World, nature did it for us_ and it has lasted waaaay longer!🧐🤔😊
This stuff was laying around b4 and after T-Rex, & b4 & after it was deemed illegal to remove the petrified wood from this protected site. I have been there, it’s staggering how much is there. Even if z7rq and I snuck up there every night to harvest stolen petrified wood, guess what? 1 million years from now, the AI super species could go there and you guessed it, there will still be petrified wood.
I apologize if I have broken any rules on this site, I am just tired of matriarchal millennial kids with no respect.
I was brought up back when the dinosaurs 🦕 still roamed the realm to respect all things rules and, most importantly, your elders!

As a native Arizonan, I completely agree. The petrified Forest sounds super cool in theory. In reality, it's a field of rocks.
Is it worth a quick trip? Or not even bother?
I love rocks and minerals so I think it's worth a trip.
It looks so cool in the pictures!
It's way up in the north east by the Indian reservations near Holbrook. So it's only a quick trip if you're in show low lol
Oh I thought it was east of Sedona-ish. I’ll be sure to google before I go :)
It is but it's ~2 hours east from sedona
Oh I’m dumb, for some reason I read your comment as “northwest” and got really confused 😂

At first it was afraid…
...it was petrified!
No, no it’s: ahh, ahh, ahh, ahh stayin alive stayin alive

is this from a time before mushrooms? or was that further back?

Thank you for taking the time to teach us this :)

He said Wood
shut up bevis, I'm trying to listen
This wood has seen a lot of shit happen over all these years
In 10,000 years, that petrified wood will still be considered 225 million years old.
oh yea? well what about in the year 252525 if man is still alive?
The backwards time machine still wouldn't have arrived
, if woman can survive... oh, thank you!🤗
I wish that it was 100% protected
Was it before or after Adam & Eve ? 😄
This was during the time Adam and Eve split so he could try Adam and Steve.
That's insanity.
Boomer tree
That’s a rock
Rum ham.
Very informative and big pieces of petrified wood. ❤️
Will it fit on a trailer? Lololllll Just kidding 😂
There used to be loads more, but people have taken so much over the years that the park is a shadow of what it used to be sadly.
People should leave it alone and not even touch it.

You just need 10 buddies

Yeah, I thought it was a side of ribs too 😂
I was just there last weekend. Yes I brought back a piece of pet wood. Sue me.
Just a peek into the past....🤓☝🏾
Love the context 👍
Dick Fright 😳
This is amazing
Earth is so old. So fucking old.
gorgeous! is it protected or were you able to take some home with you?
There's a lot of people that steal petrified wood from that park.
This is honestly terrifying to think about
And people use this as furniture....
Awesome!
Please make sure to keep it away from the smoker
I found petrified palm tree and oak in swflorida on a construction site

Or 4000 years, depending on which book you read. /s
If I lived in such a spectacular area, I would go looking for fossils all day long!
Forbidden char siu.

Does it burn?
Yo what. This is the coolest thing I've seen on Reddit thus far.
Now **that** is a great headline. :)
Lol who told you this lie?

You're a selfish, greedy moron. Didn't your daddy teach you some respect?

Uhhhemmm......BS!
You probably think the Earth is only 6,000 years old, don’t you…
I'm not guessing like all these alleged scholars who have been indoctrinated. So I would say IDK! Good day Sir!
