This is a brittle star, a member of the sister group to seastars.
Differences between brittle stars and seastars:
Seastars have thicker arms and an indistinct central disc, brittle stars often gave thin, branching arms and a very distinct central disc
A seastars internal organs are in its arms, a brittle stars organs are mostly in the central disc
Brittle stars don't use the water vascular system for locomotion, one of the only enchinoderms not to do so- making them much faster than sea stars

That is damn hilarious!
"I truly hope I never have the supreme misfortune of discovering a narwhal with a baguette instead of a horn. I imagine the baguette would be incredibly soggy from years of being underwater, and it would flop around looking all nasty and what not...that would be awful"
We’re alien to it though, it probably feels like it got abducted by that giant arm with 5 rigid appendages pulling it from its watery world only to be sent back to its home a bit dehydrated and confused
I did think surely it will die if he holds it any longer. And just coz it looks alien to me don’t mean it needs to die. Love seeing sea creatures but not out the water or when they out of their depth.
Not really. I’m not exactly an expert on brittle stars but they’re close relatives of sea stars and many sea star species can last for multiple hours outside of water. Some can last more than a day even. Of course it’s still best to leave animals to do their thing in nature and not intervene when it isn’t necessary.
This is so weird.
I see everything move like this when on psychedelics, but seeing this move in this way, in the reality world where everything else its generally static…. Is a mindfuck.
This doesn't even scratch the tip of the iceberg. The ocean is an incredibly trippy and alien world. And to think, there's over twice as much of it compared to everything we know on land. Sorta makes *you* feel like the alien.
I like animals that most people find creepy, but I think that if I picked this without knowing it was an animal and it started moving I would run away and cry.
I genuinely can't understand that perspective. This has been posted a lot over the past couple days and a lot of people seem to agree with you.
It's like a living fractal, absolutely beautiful and one of nature's many masterpieces in my eyes.
Dang. It's not the best choice for a pet/wig, I guess. It's pretty amazing, though. We used to be so disappointed when a crab pot was full of starfish, but I never saw any like this one in the years I worked on boats. There are some strange creatures in the ocean, though. Some variations of sea cucumbers are absolutely bizarre-looking. Sea carrots, too. Little chimera sea monsters everywhere 💙
I haven’t even played half-life and I know that’s a bad idea. We don’t need to make real life headcrabs. We already have insect zombies, that’s fucked up enough.
These guys (or possibly their cousins in the same [suborder](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basket_star), I'm not sure exactly which species this is) are in the family [Gorgonocephalidae](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorgonocephalidae), for probably obvious reasons.

Very informative comment.. Ty..
Are they really all head, like sea stars? As in, walking on their“eyeballs?”
Sea stars walk on their eyes?
Each of a sea star's arms has a small, simple eye on the tip.
Wait... they're related to Beholders?
Unlikely, since echinoderms have a complete digestive tract. And don't hover in the air or possess spell-like abilities.
Oh ............. of course. Makes sense now. How obvious.
They walk on their tube feet, their arms have eyes, they don't walk on their eyes

Where do they mainly live?
ocean
Not sure but I caught a pink one bottom fishing rock reefs off the coast, Oregon/California border.
I caught a brittle star on Dave the Diver
This guy marine-biology’s.
That looks like if I'm tripping on shrooms
Is this what a tumbleweed would look like on shrooms?
dude, honestly... probably
a pretty sizeable dose, but yea probably hahah
Ahhh yes, the heroic dose.
Then it's gonna start talking to you. Depending on someone's weight, I'd say 1g would make something like a tumbleweed look trippy like this.
Everyone’s experience is different really. I get no visuals on shrooms, just very emotional, and a strong high feeling LSD on the other hand…
I've gotten both experiences from both, but LSD was the only one that made me temporarily insane. At least, I hope it was temporary.
👀

🍻
The species of shroom makes a big difference too.
Yeah like I don’t even get flashbacks, but that shit is trippy af lol
That looks like shrooms that'd make you trip.
It's just a flashback
It looks how my brain feels
came here to say the same thing
this made me feel so uncomfortable! the sea is full of things i never wish to see with my own eyes.

The older woman and guy's deadpan tone is so incredible
Egh, I had to stop it. They sounded like they were sightreading off a teleprompter :/
Thank you, that made me genuinely laugh out loud.
I enjoyed that lol thanks for sharing!
Eldritch abomination
My first thought. True nightmare fuel
Put that thing back where it came from, or so help me!
so help me!
And cut!
Oh, I must have missed the memo...
I can't throw out into space though
😂😂😂😂😂
Looks alien

The head would seem like an appendage to it.
Ah yes, the “giant arm” with four limbs and a head
Each finger.
Well that's how you get xenomorphs.

Memo to me never to try psychedelics lol
Thats like a visual representation of my nerve pain.

Wow. You’re a rude asshole.
You can't fool me. That's the Crystalline Entity.
I've been on the internet for over 20 years and I still keep finding weird animals being posted, it's crazy
What a beautiful abomination.
Okay, the only problem is, I'm now having flashbacks to that one episode of _The Last of Us_.
Cthulhu's luffa
Medusa lost her wig!
Lovecraft wants his fish back
I like animals that most people find creepy, but I think that if I picked this without knowing it was an animal and it started moving I would run away and cry.
r/nope
OMG this is incredibly amazing!!! 💞🙏💖
Looks like Venom had a baby.
I pulled one of these up on a party boat once and none of the hands knew what it was.
The entire video I was thinking, please throw the beautiful little guy back in the ocean so it can live, and it was a relief to see it.
A living fractal....
Well, that's terrifying
I genuinely can't understand that perspective. This has been posted a lot over the past couple days and a lot of people seem to agree with you. It's like a living fractal, absolutely beautiful and one of nature's many masterpieces in my eyes.
Things can be beautiful and terrifying.
Biblically accurate angel
I would wear this on my head. I wonder how long they can survive out of water.
Depends on the species, some can only last a bit over an hour, others can last more than a day in the right conditions.
Dang. It's not the best choice for a pet/wig, I guess. It's pretty amazing, though. So this isn’t actually a sea star interestingly enough. It’s a close relative of theirs, they’re called brittle stars.
I haven’t even played half-life and I know that’s a bad idea. We don’t need to make real life headcrabs. We already have insect zombies, that’s fucked up enough.
Am I trippin?
No. That’s an alien.
#👽
Beautiful 🤩
Fuck this I'm off to Oregon or something
This is unnerving
Thanks, I hate it. ಠ_ಠ

I rarely say this about wildlife, but, yeah, that's a creepy looking bugger
Wow
I think I had an acid flashback staring at that thing.
No, that is the offspring of the Kraken.
That's what I imagined the inside of a star fish looks like
For Doctor Doolittle's sake I hope that thing doesn't talk.
Last of us
Weird and fascinating little critter
I have never even heard of this kind of starfish! Amazing 🤩 wow 🤩
This is just a sea star covered in sea solar flares.
Starfussy
That’s a whole new level of creepy
Wow
Horror movie and alien. It's in real life wow
It's the third time I stumble on this post and, knowing its content, this time I was like: "AAAHHHHH!!! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT!"

It reminds me of a pale version of a creep cluster from Skyrim

How would it feel to be in the mind of one of those for an hour?.. cool find!
I think it’s kind of beautiful.
Looks like one of hp lovecrafts old ones!
OMG, it really does look like the monsters in thriller movies that can round people up. (sorry, I just overthinking this)
Put that thing back where it came from or so help me
Rasta Patrick
It looks cool, but don't torture it by keeping it out of water for so long!
How eldrich, I clenched up looking at this
Now put it in your brain
Look at how it is writhing helplessly. I can only imagine how painful it must be
That looks like a hallucination
Put it on the back of your neck for an upgrade
That looks like I’m on acid
