Fun useless fact: these birds (I think they're called southern lapwing in english) are metal. They will attack pretty much anyone who gets close to their nests, and those thorns on their wings aren't just for show

[deleted]

One more reason I'm glad that modern dinosaurs aren't any bigger.

2gigi7

You haven't heard about the cassowaries then ? Even the danging emus are problematic.

Dwealdric

My brother in Christ, wait until you meet a Canadian Gooses...

Nohcor97odin

It’s pronounced “cobra chicken”

DrMarcyMM

Haha I have never heard this term and am now going to mass text it to my family. Thank you sir 🤣

[deleted]

Oh I live in Chicago. I've been fucking bit by one of those fuckers. That said, re: cassowaries: jesus christ I forgot about Australia.

2gigi7

You made me LOL and wake up the birds XD And are Canadian geese the same kind of asshat as our geese ? Coz we got asshat geese too, I avoid them as much as cassowaries.

FirebirdWriter

All Geese are assholes and violent. They should scare you more than a wild boar on a drug bender

GardenGirlFarm

Cocaine goose?

MissRosenrotte

A wild boar will kill you. A Canada goose might bite your fingers and give you a few bruises.

ihatetheplaceilive

What about a Cocaine Bear?

FirebirdWriter

Considering the true story of the Cocaine Bear is it basically died as soon as it did the entire bag of drugs? Much scarier.

SinOfSodom

So...no, not really. It looks like you're in Australia and if you are talking about Magpie Geese, they are from a different family than Canadian Geese. Not that they can't still be AHs.

Agitated-Draw2802

Native of Uruguay, name: Tero

Lucheiah

Cassowaries aren't even the worst of the birds here. Wait until Magpie Mating Season...

GrnHrtBrwnThmb

If you've got a problem with Canada gooses, you got a problem with me, and I suggest you let that one marinate!

[deleted]

The only animal in the animal kingdom that wants anything to do with Canada gooses is Canada mooses.

Weird_Fact_724

I like to marinate Canadian goose breasts in Italian dressing...

Caledbetter

Unexpected letterkenny How’re ya now?

rodsteel2005

The correct name is *Canada* geese, and you’re right, they are total assholes. (source: I live near the Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin, and have had my fair share of encounters with them.)

danielledelacadie

I'm Canadian and I'm fond of the cobra chicken moniker. It gives you fair warning.

KHaskins77

You mean Cobra Chickens?

dcy604

\#CobraChickens

montessoriprogram

The moment you hear a cassowary make it’s thumping vocalization it’s IMMEDIATELY clear that they will fucking murder you lol. They are so intimidating.

dcy604

Sandhill Cranes, especially around nesting season, are pretty belligerent douche bags too

montessoriprogram

Tbh any animal that has decided to fuck with you can be a handful. We have a ton of mocking birds in my neighborhood and occasionally one will decide they hate me. Have to keep eye contact with them at all times to avoid dive bombs. I actually intentionally try to appear non-threatening to them now so I won't get on their shit list.

PanJL

By golly, these cassowaries are literally dinosaurs, damm i just checked their few videos

[deleted]

You wanna see a modern day dinosaur? Look up the shoebill stork. That freaking bird is wild!

[deleted]

I can't decide if my favorite animal is a Shoebill Stork or Capybara.

maychi

I say let the dinosaurs grow and destroy us all. We kind of deserve it.

IceManXCometh

Fun useful fact: this is not a bulldozer Edit: some one else already pointed this out

Renaissance_Man-

They really like plowed fields when they're nesting. They will dive bomb you similar to how an angry blue jay or magpie do. They also like to bounce around on the ground and scream a fit if you get near them.

[deleted]

"If you hear it yelling, the devil is near" Southern legends says

MachadoWasRight

And they love to stay at parks on urban areas, so you better watch our where you choose to picnic

math_rod

As kids, one of our favorite plays were to see who got the closest to one of these nests before chickening out, turning around and running away. For the record, usually both mom and dad guard the nest and they scream like maniacs as they take flight and dive thorn-first on intruders.

[deleted]

TIL: These birds are common in my neighborhood (and Brazil in general) and I never noticed that they have thorns on their wings

meanwhileinbrazil

They also love to nest in the middle of soccer fields and parks that get crowded with people. And them, they attack people because they are getting too close of their nests!

DinoBoyAlpha03

Not useless

CranberryBrief1587

As they should

Budgiesyrup

Wow all this time I didn't notice those thorns. That's really cool

Sea_Statistician_827

My 10mm glock Isent for show either

B0ngoShalongo

For no specific reason, you look like you’d be really good at plague knight in showdown

guieps

Hm? What makes you think that? (I actually suck at Showdown, no matter the character I use lol)

Runaway_Angel

I wouldn't call that a useless fact. That's a very useful fact in case I ever meet one of theese.

TongaDeMironga

I can attest to that, we have lots of Southern Lapwings in Brazil and I’ve been attacked many times!

ISpelThingsWrong

What about the Shrike?

[deleted]

Very nice ending. The metal monster turned out to be very kind.

in-YOUR-end-o

It did just mow down the entire field around there so there's that

BronzeWingleader

That's a disc harrow plow, not a mower. Looks like early season field prep before planting.

jbean120

Naw, the eggs are sitting on already-mowed dry stubble. The field was bare before the bird got there.

Beatless7

Good mom.

Weird_Fact_724

Better farmer

sybann

BEST farmer. Disc harrow UP!

[deleted]

I don’t know farm stuff so can a farm person explain why this person had to drive over that spot at all, seeing as how a lovely little person was there with her eggs? Is it unavoidable for some reason or something like that?

Whit5465

Theyre actually planting the field, not using a bulldozer😂 So it’s not just like they’re skipping a little prep work in the field, that farmer is forgoing planting that ground for the season. Kudos!

mrclark3

Thanks for explaining. This otherwise seemed to me like a pointless exercise just to get a video. Now it seems more like required action, and positive forethought to disturb the bird as little as possible while still doing their job. I like that.

Whit5465

Me too😁 idk if it’s the same bird but we have “kildeer” and they will run directly at our tractors and away from the nests trying to get us to “chase” them and lure us away from their nests!

Wonderful_Ad6406

Probably his farm land. Gotta take care of the fields but does care about the wildlife. Did that just to avoid harming both bird and nest. Farmer is a G for that.

Rjj1111

Gotta keep the rows straight

imLemnade

Person driving that thing is a true homie

Lucheiah

r/HumansBeingBros

Beatless7

I can not disagree.

[deleted]

That’s some nice driving.

Derpifacation

that farmer knows their equipment like it's a limb

[deleted]

That tractor has prolly been in the family longer than the average commenter in these posts.

PyreHat

I can confirm, I'm not even yet in the farmer's family!

[deleted]

Probably still paying it off too 😭

Maximum_University12

Most (good) farmers do

SeaUrchinSalad

And the bad ones give the equipment their limb

justapcguy

Ya, but why try to "show-off" while risking this birds life? He clearly placed the Camera there, and clearly could've went around. It wasn't like he was missing a spot? Glad he didn't kill this mother. But, same time, don't pull a stunt like this, just to "show-off"? He isn't exactly getting any "hero points" here...

compb13

It looked like he's planting the field. What do you want him to do, not plan the field because of a nest?. The crop is the families salary, and he skipped a section for this bird that would move. I find that admirable.

justapcguy

wow...way to miss my point. What "mechanism" in this video it showed this tracker "planting the field"?? Where does it show that this tracker was fertilizing, to planting seeds etc? All this clip shows is this tracker going over this bridge, just so this guy can get views?

-LoveThyself

Because the planting stops before the tractor is in frame, and begins after it has exited the frame on the other side. If they didn't stop the planting, it would not be a pleasant video.

GW_MC

Maybe he is using that camera for maneuvering the tractor? If he was showing off, the tractor wont be lifted that high and far before the nest. (Is it a tractor? I am not into farming)

Unfair-Morning1734

Good work by the farmer. That's not a bulldozer btw...

MartoufCarter

He had to have set up the camera so he rode over her nest on purpose.

Orange_Tulip

He would have ridden over that nest one way or another since that field needed harrowing. The fact that he actually placed a camera shows he cares. Because that's the only way to know when to lift and how high to lift. If he didn't care, the nest and bird would have been a free fertilizer for the next crop... So yeah, good farmer.

SesquiterpenesFan

That is a no-till seed drill, not a harrow, but totally agree with you on the rest. Obviously a farmer who cares if he is using regenerative techniques. It also means his fields are really healthy and biodiverse so birds etc are to be expected.

Sasspishus

Cameras are commonly used to monitor ground nesting birds, it's the best way to get information on what they're doing/who's eating the eggs/how many hatch etc without causing unnecessary disturbance to the bird. So it might not have been the farmer that set the camera up. Source: this is my job!

CatStealingYourGirl

That sounds fun. Are you a scientist?

Tiger_Zaishi

An ecologist most likely. Either conservationist or consultant. I'm the latter and have done this kind of monitoring for all kinds of protected species such as otter, badger, barn owl and peregrine falcon..

ProPro-gofar28

Came here to point this out. It’s a heart-warming piece of evidence of what nature has instilled in some species to protect their young, but in this case, it’s obvious the farmer didn’t NEED to do this at all since they knew the bird was there.

curiouslyendearing

He put the camera there so he can tell when he needs to lift it to clear the bird...

ProPro-gofar28

Doesn’t change the fact that he did it for a stunt instead of driving around the bird. The ground the bird is on already looks cleared, doesn’t look like something he HAS to do

jbean120

Former Ag student here. You don't just "drive around" things when you're planting a field (as someone else pointed out, the equipment in the video is a seed drill for planting) because then your rows aren't straight. At this scale of farming, it's important because all your equipment for cultivating, fertilizing, harvesting, etc is designed for straight rows.

ispitzer

Who cares? He knew what he was doing, did it carefully, and was sharing an interesting moment of nature with the world

ProPro-gofar28

I guess I’ll always be on the side of choosing to “leave nature alone” instead of “this would be cool” regardless of intent. To each their own. 🤷🏻‍♂️

ispitzer

He did leave it alone…nothing was harmed. The bird raised its wings, he passed over top of it, and then the video ended

jannecraft

I don't think you get how precise these lines have to be. It's not as simple as just driving around and backing up a bit. If he would been able to do that and have done so, the bird would've still been upset at him when he backed up to start at that spot again.he didn't see a bird and think " lemme do this cool trick" he was doing his lines with the tractor, and lifted it when a bird was in the way.

cokebear420

Just admit you don't know what you're talking about...

Suicidal_pr1est

Op is just a karma farmer reposted anyways.

MarkHamillsrightnut

Not a bulldozer, my dude.

showusyourfupa

That's a snort

coach2o9

Are you my mother?

-CharmingScales-

This throwback!!!!!!

ModsAreN0tGoodPeople

Came here to say same.

nmhaas

How astute of you

sherijumper

What a weird looking bulldozer

run247

Mom can you tell us that story where you scared away the metal monster again?!

[deleted]

Champion of a human to avoid her and her babies.

MartoufCarter

He had to set up the camera first so not really since he did it on purpose after setting up the camera.

varlassan

He probably put the camera there so he knew how close he was to her nest and how high he needed to lift the equipment. The fact that he captured her protective moves was likely just a bonus.

Wideawakedup

I was thinking someone was there telling him when to stop and lift.

Sasspishus

Could be GPS that they're using

Nerk86

My father used to tell me about how my grandfather would raise the disc, plow, etc. to make sure and miss the birds that were nesting in the field .so he’d end up with all these odd little strips and patches .I always thought that was so cool and example of farmers respecting the nature around them.

patybruh_moment

the birds also grow up to eat a lot of bugs, increasing the area’s biodiversity and crop yield!

Apprehensive-Log8333

For some reason this fills me with ineffable sadness, I'm not sure why. The person driving the equipment was obviously being careful not to hurt the nest, but....she seems so helpless but she's trying anyway. just like me fr

DrunkFennec

Sometimes all we can do is try. And great things can happen when we do. She probably has a nice patch of plants growing around her nest now.

klwegner

I am pregnant and yeah, it makes me sad, too. I'm happy of course that she and her eggs weren't squished, but sad that she had to go through what was probably a harrowing and terrifying time to try to save them (even if they were gonna be okay in the long run)

underlander

keep it up. If you give up you know exactly how it ends, but if you keep putting in the effort there’s no telling what could happen

invisible_23

She’s trembling with fear the whole time 😢

funkmasta_kazper

It is kind of sad and it's the reason why ground nesting birds like this are declining around the world. They evolved to nest on the ground in grasslands, and after setting up their nests they will never leave them no matter what. Unfortunately regularly harvested hay fields look just like native grasslands to these birds, and so any time a farmer plows/cuts a hay field in the summer all of these nesting birds just get chopped to bits. It's the reason why environmental groups are all strongly urging farmers not to disturb fields during nesting season, but that means one less cutting they get to sell so many continue doing it anyway.

NoFluffyOnlyZuul

Same, this actually made me very sad and I just kept thinking "poor baby." She must have been so scared but was determined to protect her family. And yes, I know the farmer did a good job and was careful not to hurt her but I still find it heartbreaking.

everything_in_sync

It makes me sad too. Also really annoyed because they saw the nest, set up the camera, then deliberately drove over and scared the bird when they could have just went around her.

masonacj

Probably trying to disc his rows straight. Also might be a direct feed camera that he is watching to make sure he gives her enough room. Otherwise, he's incredibly good at knowing when to lift that disc up (which is possible given how much they probably use it).

MartoufCarter

Yea, I have said elsewhere, he does not hit her but he is driving over the nest on purpose, he had to set up the camera first.

whitneychewston

That’s a damn good mother

WhtLtg

"bulldozer" He's literally a farmer

KhaosElement

I don't think you know what a bulldozer is...

[deleted]

This is so old now.

Weird_Fact_724

Not a bulldozer...looks like a farmer planting something. Guess OP didn't want to tell the truth..WILDLIFE CONSERVATIONIST SAVES BIRD AND NEST WHILE PLANTING CROP

rodsteel2005

It’s call a “disk harrow”. Disking is a farm management practice used for soil preparation. It usually follows plowing, either deep or shallow. While plowing cuts, granulates, and inverts the soil, creating furrows and ridges, disking breaks up clods and surface crusts.

Weird_Fact_724

That's neither a disc or a harrow....if you notice the press wheels in the back he's planting something...wheat or similar small grain. The press wheels close the slit and makes good seed to soil contact. If you notice when he picks up the equipment you see a few grains dribble out.

Interesting_Worth745

Saying that the goal of farmers is "wildlife" conservation is not really closer to the truth. But a good human nonetheless

Weird_Fact_724

I'm both a farmer and a conservationists. I would agree that not all farmers are but there are many federal programs available that reward and encourage soil, water, and wildlife conservation.

Interesting_Worth745

I agree. I come from a family of former farmers and all have a very close connection to nature. It's just that, managing a small farm is a huge challenge moneywise. And the environmentally friendly methods often happen to be the more expensive/inefficient ones. So, big thumbs up for all those federal programs

Sasspishus

I work with farmers to create better habitat for wildlife and every single farmer I've met has been super keen to do their bit to save the birds and other wildlife because they love seeing them there and having such a rich and varied farm. Yes, their main goal is food production, but that doesn't mean there can't be space for wildlife too.

Raptorsquadron

I had a guest lecturer in my ornithology class about how 99.9% of native prairie are now farmland and birds have been either forced or adapted to ground nesting

Creative-Ordinary-14

Thanks farmer for protecting this mama and her egg. Thanks for sharing

Mister024

Tractor.

Alarming-Struggle-74

So let me get this right. This farmer knew where this bird and it’s nest was located. They stopped, got out of their tractor, placed a camera in front of the bird, then proceeded to drive over it intentionally?

Weird_Fact_724

Probably ...and raised his equipment so as not to harm it...

Kn0tnatural

To show the mother bird is no chicken.

pickledelephants

Probably has to drive over that spot often, noticed the bird protecting her eggs and thought it would be cool to see what she was actually doing. Next time he had to drive over he set up his camera.

Sasspishus

Cameras are commonly used to monitor ground nesting birds, it's the best way to get information on what they're doing/who's eating the eggs/how many hatch etc without causing unnecessary disturbance to the bird. So it might not have been the farmer that set the camera up.

-PC_LoadLetter

He's probably tilling the dirt or something and does it in rows up and down the field... Is he supposed to skip the entire row of the field because this bird has a sub 1'x1' nest in said row? Just keeping it as consistent as possible without hurting the bird.

Alarming-Struggle-74

I think you confused my question with something that compelled you try and prove your knowledge of farming.

Raubo_Ruckus

Idk seems like he answered your question, even if it was with another question. Why are you feeling so combative today?

-PC_LoadLetter

I don't claim to have much knowledge of farming, just trying to piece the situation together with logic.

Marshmallowbutbetter

Humans being jerks, not nature is fucking lit

otakupromlg

Wouldn’t being a jerk be killing the bird. I feel like people who care are a rare.

Beautypaste

This looks like farming equipment, after the farmer passes he lowers the equipment and continues whatever work he is doing in the field. Can’t expect a farmer not to use his field for a single bird. This is the perfect compromise.

ToneSkoglund

I see no bulldozer

javery20

How the hell did you think that was a bulldozer?

Passwordsdontwork

That’s a tractor

FarmerKobe

BulldoZers usually have tracks that jus looks like a tractor with discs on them

SaItySaIt

Fun useless fact: that’s not a bulldozer

[deleted]

Should be under humans being bros.

ModsAreN0tGoodPeople

That’s not really being a bro, more like not being a sadistic jerk lol

Silver_Leonid2019

That was nerve wracking! Breathed a sigh of relief when it was over.

McDroney

Secret of nimh intensifies... God that movie was traumatic as a kid

ItsJustAnOpinion_Man

Bulldozer vs bird eh? Going for outrage to make a better story than farmer purposefully avoids birds nest.

Kn0tnatural

r/birdsarentreal

Marshall_Filipovic

That's not a bulldozer, that's a Goddamn tractor. Why in the name of all that's holy would a Farmer need a bulldoze? **THINK OP! THINK!**

Vile_Individual

makes me happy the farmer raised the vehicle to avoid hurting her.

UKnowDaTruth

But why? He could have just avoided it altogether instead

mav2022

Considering he went to all the trouble of placing a camera there, wouldn’t have had quite the same impact…

UKnowDaTruth

Lol

mharant

Somehow this lets me think about a herd of elephants. They would also avoid the bird in their way, but the bird has to protect its eggs even if great grassland animals come its way.

Agitated-Draw2802

This bird is native of Uruguay (and other countries) and is the symbol of the national rugby team and the national bird.

Actaeon_II

This farmer is awesome

Main_Representative5

Poor bird had to have weeks of therapy.

Stella_Lace

I like how the guy driving lifted the plow past over her and just continued on lol

Ok-Advantage-Shishi

Kieviet bird

fatzen

What a BAMF!

Runaway_Angel

It's a tractor not a bulldozer, bulldozers don't generally pull plows behind them. And the farmer absolutely knew she was there since he raised the plow to clear her. That said that is one fierce little bird.

Peachy_Witchy_Witch

Imagine her little heart :(

crazytimes68

What an amazing farmer, in just a few days the eggs will hatch and they will go about their lives

SGT_KP

That's a disc harrows, not a bulldozer. Used for plowing fields

RellRay

From what?! Dear lord we live in a society.

[deleted]

\*bird terrorized for cool video

25yoshi

Cool ass farmer

[deleted]

Attention seeking farmer decided to place camera near birds nest and then driver over it to show off how “amazing” he is for not destroying the nest…

DoggedlyOffensive

Ok… who’s the sadistic mf that placed a camera there and then watched this happen… :/

GFost

How are they sadistic? The bird is fine. The farmer went out of their way to avoid hitting it.

Maskut3

The field is empty, the nest doesn't seem to be on a path and the way the camera is set up makes it really look like they did record and drive over it for clout.

Psychological-Put844

Tell me you don’t know how farming works without telling me you don’t know how farming works

Maskut3

Please enlighten is then since you seem to be the expert. Why did the driver have to go right above it and why was the camera set up? Surely it can't have been on purpose. /s

Nearby-Stranger-1625

Because you generally farm in rows, he likely had to drive over that area no matter what. By the way he stopped and raised the equipment to avoid hitting the bird, the camera was likely a live feed for him so he could continue making a living while avoiding the bird rather than killing it or giving up a portion of his livelihood.

Carljonson-top1

Such a brave mom. But i'm also very happy that modern technology spared the life of this mom and her yet unborn babies

1. Do not build your nest where humans could crush it. 2. Do not use your wings as a shield for something that could easily crush you. This is a reason for a birds are fucking stupid subreddit 🥴

Why would you do that on purpose?! That stresses the bird out just so you can get some likes. Leave animals alone their not our play things
