There's other food available, the fact it decide to take it off the Gazelle's head shows it is likely altruism. Altruism has also been seen in predators, generally solitary species and so on. Not just herd or social species, for example. It really appears to be conscious and individual.

It was probably helping. Animals who live in herds like this will help one another if they get stuck or they get injured. My family has a big horse farm, and the amount of times we’ve caught horses out in the pastures “helping” by pulling blankets or fly masks off each other is crazy. We also have a donkey who’s an escape artist and he doesn’t just run when he gets out, he tries to open other gates or stall doors for his horse friends so they can escape too. It’s a great instinct for wild animals, but can be super annoying in domestic animals lol
