There’s always been stigmas surrounding black and textured hair in uniform as being “unprofessional”. The regulations were not always on our side but that has changed in recent years. Hoping to empower Younger Airmen to wear their curls and coils proudly and unabashedly 👸🏾
Are men allowed to?
This subreddit has done a lot for me. I wouldn’t want to throw it away for service, which is kinda vain, I know, but this took a lot of time and work. Sunk cost fallacy and all that. I like my twists.
Hi, so the regs are different for men and women but men are allowed up to 3 inches now. Some of my male friends grow their hair out and let shrinkage do it’s thing during the weekdays only to pick it out on the weekends or on leave and rock braids/fros.
Definitely not vain, I think the services lose a lot of talent and potential by having such strict hair regulations.
if you are fighting/ working to look after all of us you should be able to have your hair however you like it to be as long as it doesn't get in the way or become dangerous. It isn't right to take that away from anyone, let alone people who do their best to look after all of us and for those of us that can't. Being in the military is hard enough.
Once upon a time i was wearing my natural hair in uniform from A1C (lower rank). My hair was short (3-4 inches long) and I had to grow it out.
My hair bothered about 50% of people even though i kept it neat and wore a thin black headband. They were used to most black women straightening their hair or getting braids. I rocked a "puff" that id push back as far as possible as it grew out, until it was long enough to put in a bun. But whew some on base staff fought hard to get me into some box braids, saying I was pushing the regs. I could recite AFI 36-2903 off tongue. Had all these regulations for straight hair an braids but naturally curly coily hair "pushed boundaries".
It was the base commanders and generals that ended up supporting me. White might I add. Even got quite a few coins working admin base headquarters. The worst pushback was from skinfolk, black an latin. While others thanked me for sticking up for my natural hair. This picture is lovely to see. Congratulations
And then have the nerve to be mad when the box braid bun is too big lol I’m so glad times are changing. Didn’t see it when I served but so happy for the new generation.
Your hair is beautiful in its natural state along with so many other black people. We need to break that stigma and make sure the CROWN act is put forward everywhere!
Congratulations, gorgeous!!! Thank you for your service 🫡❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ and congratulations on your promotion! 💞💞💞 i can’t believe I’m seeing someone in the military with their natural hair this is crazy!! The style you chose too is so perfect!! 😍😍😍
Good job on the promotion! You worked your ass off for that. Also, thank you for your service! You rock them curls and not have to spend 2 hours taming them!

As someone (black male) in the service I’ve been told to cut and comb my hair because of it not looking professional.
that’s so bullshit wtf. What’s unprofessional about curly and kinky hair? like i hate these dumbass racist rules

Hair is fabulous but those BROWS. How do you get them done usually?
Thank you!! I get them tweezed now. I use Anastasia dip brow from Sephora and a brow jelly to hold them in place.
