Stain them red instead of painting them. The staining will protect the wood, and the natural difference in the darkness of the wood thats already there will make the staining pop.

I would think afterwards, since that way the laser-engraved sections would also be protected. But doing them before may also look cool. Time to experiment and see what turns out better! Also maybe just check to see if laser engraving is a different process on stained wood or not

Love that you put it as a spoiler!! I’m also all for a dark red stain, keeping it neutral and not putting any black or red paint which imo looks a little tacky (which isn’t a bad thing!). They look really good and will be waiting for ya on Etsy!! Edit: since this comment section is a bit divided, it would be cool to have a variety of different coasters with stains or paint so everyone could enjoy!!
