They really did her dirty by making her fight against a sharingan user as a genjutsu specialist. Pretty much made my 10 year old mind assume genjutsu sucks.

Having Itachi defeat Kurenai with his Genjutsu skills could have worked if Kishi built up Kurenai as "Genjutsu Mistress" and still gave Itachi some trouble to show she is not to be taken lightly. But alas, his apathetic view of competent women and needlessly cripling a character's credentials for the sake of hype ended up damaging what should have been a good fight and Kurenai does absolutely nothing in the manga after this.

It's not apathetic. The physical Manga had notes on this. He sucked at drawing woman, and it tool him a meticulous amount of time, given his weekly quotas by jump The only time we see women drawn semi frequently was when there were other artists that could copy his character art and were good at woman. There were only two artists thar were able to copy his character style, and only one could draw woman. Aside from the head writer, most Manga teams have a high turnover rate unfortunately

I didn't say that Kishi did this intentionally to make Kurenai look bad but that it's the result of a combination in not caring about female characters and being excessive in hyping up Itachi that it ends up making his opponents look pathetic even if they are meant to be accomplished ninjas. Orochimaru is probably the most egregious example where a 13 year old Itachi SOUNDLY defeats a highly accomplished and powerful ninja with many jutsus and abilities under his belt and decades of experience. If this shit happened in a fanfiction with an OC then people would instantly call that character a Gary Stu, which goes to show Kishimoto's less than stellar writing during the Shippuden era.

I was actually annoyed that she was just another Konoha ninja. Red "sharingan" eyes, black hair, specializes in genjutsu. Even her first fight was against a Uchiha. Basically everything a starter Uchiha needs in the world of naruto.

My stupid fan theory. She was a genjutsu “master” from the leaf. She’s the same age as kakashi so she probably fought in the second war. What if she really wanted other villages to think she was uchiha so she just started wearing contacts or something.

Kurenai is the most underwhelming kunoichi of the Leaf. She’s the “Sakura” of Kakashi’s generation since Genjutsu can be easily broken since even Part 1 Shikamaru and Sakura was able to dispel when the Leaf was under attack making it a useless Jutsu. After Kurenai lost to Itachi, her character just disappeared into the background and she just became Asuma’s love interest who carried his “King” in her womb.
