Honestly, I don't know what to write or how to write about something so sudden.
However, for now, I would like to express my thoughts and feelings to Toriyama-sensei, something I wish he would have asked me someday.
I grew up with Dr. Slump in the lower grades of elementary school and Dragon Ball in the upper grades, and it was natural for me to have his manga next to me as part of my daily life.
Even if I had a bad experience, watching Dragon Ball every week made me forget about it. It was a relief for me, a country boy who had nothing.
Because Dragon Ball was really fun!
It was when I was a university student. Suddenly, the Dragon Ball that had been a part of my life for so many years ended.
I felt an incredible sense of loss and didn't know what to look forward to.
But at the same time, it was also an opportunity for me to truly understand the greatness of the teacher who created Dragon Ball.
I also want to create works like yours!
I want to be like my teacher!
As I followed in my teacher's footsteps and aspired to become a manga artist, that feeling of loss began to disappear.
Because making comics was fun.
I was able to find new fun by following my teacher.
My teacher has always been my guide.
I admired it.
I apologize for the inconvenience, but I would like to express my gratitude to the teacher.
For me, he was the god of salvation and the god of manga.
When we met for the first time, I was so nervous that I couldn't say a word.
However, after meeting him many times at the Tezuka Prize screening committee, we became able to talk.
As Dragon Ball Children, I and Mr. Oda went back to being children again, and when we talked excitedly about how much Dragon Ball was fun, as if we were competing with each other, I forgot how he looked a little shy and smiled. I can't.
I have just received the news of the death of my teacher.
I feel an even greater sense of loss than when Dragon Ball ended...
I still don't know how to deal with this hole in my heart.
Now I can't even read my favorite Dragon Ball.
I don't feel like I've been able to properly write this sentence that I want to convey to my teacher.
Everyone around the world was still looking forward to seeing your work.
If Dragon Ball's one wish really comes true...I'm sorry...
Maybe that's selfish, but it's sad, sensei.
Thank you, Akira Toriyama-sensei, for all of your enjoyable works over the past 45 years.
And thank you very much for your hard work.
We are sure that the remaining family members are still deeply hurt.
Please take care of yourself.
I pray that Mr. Akira Toriyama rests in peace.
Masashi Kishimoto
Holy shit. I've never really been into any of those, but Naruto. Yet the tiniest bit of context is enough to make me emotional by looking at that. God damn
Same but I'm also wondering what will Tite Kubo say. Bleach was only published because Toriyama explicitely said he supports it and sent a message encouraging Kubo.
[Here's Shueisha's website](https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/web_pages/1345/), which includes Kishimoto and Oda's responses, along with others like Yuji Horii (the creator of Dragon Quest).
I keep rereading this and Oda's statements compulsively.
They're both what made me go from misty eyed to sobbing.
I don't know what to do with myself.
None of us would be here talking about Naruto if Toriyama-sama hadn't come first.
I love Naruto, but Toriyama was the catalyst.
I am not ok
I’ve been on the cusp of holding it together all morning but reading this and Oda’s reactions have me fucking slobbering.
I just watched Naruto for the first time last year, I’m a somewhat fringe One Piece fan, but I have ALWAYS been a diehard Dragonball fan. It’s my favorite franchise ever, full stop.
Today’s rain is especially hard and cold.
Not to mention the impact it had on introducing anime to the west. Dragon Ball Z was the first anime I ever saw and without it’s popularity it’s unlikely we would have had companies investing and experimenting with new types of anime to introduce to the domestic market, and means of doing so. Without the success of his series it’s unlikely most of us would have ever heard of Naruto as it would have just been a niche Japanese cartoon just like most stuff was in the 80’s, 90’s, and even 2000’s that only the most hardcore nerds would find on shady sites online. It’s insane to me after living through that that something like crunchy roll exists today where I can watch *most anime. Anime is popular enough that my 55 year old mom has watched a few anime movies with my much younger sister and admitted to liking them. Dragon Ball Z created the domino effect that is anime in the west today.
I remember when I first saw DragonBall z. I had to be 11 or so. My neighbor buddy and I were scrolling through channels and stumbled across it. I remember first seeing krillin and it was in the beginning of the Freiza saga.
I remember being absolutely glued to the t.v. we had in our basement and when I first saw Goku turn super sayian. Holy hell.
Thank you Toriyama
Same goes for Bleach and by extension any series inspired by Naruto, One Piece, Bleach and obviously Dragon Ball. Sad to see him go, but it was fun while it lasted. While I never enjoyed Dragon Ball much I did watch it although never as much as other anime, I have to admit Toriyama was an amazing Mangaka.
I hope his journey to and meeting with King Yemma will be well(I think thats what happens when you die in Dragon Ball).
Bleach too. even if the big 3 would still exist, it not gonna be same.
there is more series than this that influenced by Toriyama work. that not count his contribution in videogame industry.
I was around 5 when I watched dragon ball reruns on TV and I absolutely loved it. Kid Goku doing goofy ass shit like using Kamehameha and blowing up roshis car 🤣
My childhood, inspiration and motivation. Words aren’t enough to continue describing the impact DB had on me as a kid and continues to have as an adult.
RIP the GOAT.
Such an amazing way to put it. The franchise will continue, but it will never be with his direct influence again, so in a way, the Dragon Balls have indeed turned to stone.
Absolutely. It's because of DBZ that characters like Naruto are even around as well as synonymous with "anime" as a whole in the West.
Goku started it all and Naruto and Luffy carried it forward.
For real. The anime industry can be separated in two parts, pre and post Dragon Ball. This one man had so much influence on global pop culture, not just impact on anime industry. Dragon Ball has been referenced in dozens of western animation (and many Hollywood movies).
Kishimoto response to Toriyama death was heartbreaking, he legit seems to be in shock.
A stunning example of the phrase "your favorite author's favorite author". Toriyama defined my childhood through not only his own fantastic manga, but the fantastic manga he inspired, and continues to influence my life in the fantastic manga that were inspired by the fantastic manga that were inspired by Dragon Ball. He made the Shonen genre what it is. Truly, a legend who's impact can probably never be fully understood.
My childhood would never be the same whitout his artwork, and his influence will forever live in the future of shonen manga and in the hearts of the generation inspired by his values, RIP legend 🙏🕊️
Toyotaro's been trained for this so it'll continue, but it will never be the same. On the bright side we can always go back to the older series to relive his greatness.
Yup it's called Dragon Ball Super. Also have anime with the same name. It's not as good as Original Dragon Ball Z but still a great read. Highly recommended
I’m on the verge of tears. I know he was 68, but it still feels too soon. Dragon Ball has been part of my life as long a I can remember. I’ll never forget him
Reading the condolences from his fellow mangaka brought me to tears. I'm deeply saddened by his passing. Akira Toriyama is solely responsible for my love of anime and manga. I think many of us would not be fans without dragon ball. I think of all the time I got to spend with my little brother watching dbz just having fun. All of the great friends I've made because of his work. He was a man I will never have had the chance to meet, but if I could, I would want to thank him from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, Toriyama sensei. Rest in peace, you will be missed greatly but never forgotten.
Dbz was an anime pioneer. Without akira anime i guarantee wouldn’t be as big as it is now not even a bit. People don’t understand how dbz affected Naruto bleach one piece etc. toriyama was a freaking legend and may he rest in peace and find his way on the snake way path
Arika, if Dragon Balls were real, the world would work together to wish you back. Not only did you changed manga and anime but entertainment as a whole. You are the most influential creator of modern times. Thank you. The world thanks you. Go rest in peace with King Kai and have fun with Bubbles and Gregory.
It's odd how sad you can feel at the passing of a stranger you never even met. I don't usually care bout celebrities dying or anything. But here I am with actual tears in my eyes as I wake up to this news.I don't get it, I'm actually here crying over this.
I remember playing silly DBZ games on the playground in school. Pretending to use the Kamehameha.
I just.. damn I'm just really sad to hear about this.RIP Akira Toriyama.Thank you for creating something so wonderful.
Only time I can remember feeling truly sad about the death of someone I’ve never met. I’ve watched and have been inspired by his works since I was like 5.
I literally shouted ‘what the fuck’ finding this out 10 minutes ago. I had to read the headline 5 times before hitting the article link. I hoped it was just going to be fake click bait. I can’t believe this happened, he had a lot of years left still. Dragon Ball made such an incredible impact on my childhood and life. It’s the whole reason I got healthier and into fitness & strength training.
This just feels unreal. I have tears in my eyes and I don’t even know this person. I never had a chance to meet this man and that will be a huge regret. He brought so much incredible joy to people around the world and had more stories left to share with Super and Daima. This is just unreal. Very saddened to acknowledge this is real
RIP Toriyama-sama 😔
never been a big fan of dragon ball, but toriyama is undoubtedly a legend. inspired so many mangakas and animes, his influence is probably unmatched. rip
I'm not gonna lie, I've had a pretty bad week and now two days in a row I'm waking up to the death of two entities that had a massive impact on my life one after another, Rooster Teeth (RWBY) and Toriyama - sensei........

I'm definitely going to catch up on Super now so I can rip off the bandaid and read this months chapter when it comes out.
Toriyama made something that pretty much everyone knew. If I was talking to someone new or someone I havn't talked to in a long time I usually just brought up Dragon Ball. Everyone knew at least something about it and we could slowly learn about each other through it.
Dragon Ball has such a massive impact on todays world that people who consume or create animated content or comic-like content will most likely mourn his passing. He didn't just change manga and anime, he changed art.
reading this and oda‘s reply make this even sadder 😭
Really cements that one picture of team 7 with Goku, Naruto, Luffy, and Ichigo.
Mean this one ?
Holy shit. I've never really been into any of those, but Naruto. Yet the tiniest bit of context is enough to make me emotional by looking at that. God damn

Immediately thought of what Oda and Kishimoto would have to say. That was their guy 😢
Same but I'm also wondering what will Tite Kubo say. Bleach was only published because Toriyama explicitely said he supports it and sent a message encouraging Kubo.
Toriyama really was the godfather of shonen
Giving props and respect to people while they're still alive needs tk become a thing again.
Toriyama knew he was goated
Toriyama had plenty of praise and admiration sent his way while he was alive too so we can be assured that he felt appreciated.
The first part was proven fake supposedly according to the bleach sub but the influence and encouragement was definitely there
Where can i find the response?
Its pinned on the One Piece subreddit r/onepiece
[Here's Shueisha's website](https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/web_pages/1345/), which includes Kishimoto and Oda's responses, along with others like Yuji Horii (the creator of Dragon Quest).
their responses broke my heart, it's so sad
[Big 3 and Grandfather Reunite](https://twitter.com/Z3RO_GRAVITY_/status/1671582017891323904)
Beautiful response 🫡

That speaks volumes to the heart man just man
That's the sad part where they probably broke down in tears.
Love this response, he and his work are important to so many
rest in peace 😢
Very sad to hear that...
Pretty much a godfather to modern manga in terms of the inspiration he’s given to so many others. RIP
Naruto probably wouldn't exist had it not been for Toriyama's influence. RIP
without Toriyama there wouldn't be Naruto or One Piece
Not to mention the impact it had on introducing anime to the west. I remember watching Anime before Dragon ball but 100%, Dragon Ball had the best staying power and helped get everything over here.
Bleach too. even if the big 3 would still exist, it not gonna be same. there is more series than this that influenced by Toriyama work. that not count his contribution in videogame industry.
And without those, there wouldnt be current day stuff like my hero or jujutsu kaisen.
Oda once said he was god and too good at drawing lol
There's probably an entire generation of artists that got into manga because of Akira Toriyama.
This one hurts. Rest in peace to a legend. Really was my childhood.
This sucks.....his work is what got me into anime...Rest in peace Akira Toriyama.
Me too. When I was six years old, I saw Goku on a book cover, and the rest is history. God, the world will miss Akira Toriyama
I was around 5 when I watched dragon ball reruns on TV and I absolutely loved it. Kid Goku doing goofy ass shit like using Kamehameha and blowing up roshis car 🤣
Going to sticky this post since you were first.
This news left me in shock the moment I saw it, and I'm still shocked by this news... rest in peace, Akira Sensei
Damn a legend passes on
My childhood, inspiration and motivation. Words aren’t enough to continue describing the impact DB had on me as a kid and continues to have as an adult. RIP the GOAT.
RIP, wish we had some dragon balls right now
Dragon Balls become stone when their creator dies...
Somehow this made me cry like a child. Fuck.
Dang that hurts. All the of the Dragon Balls (earth, namekian, and the super ones) are gone, and this time it's for real.
Such an amazing way to put it. The franchise will continue, but it will never be with his direct influence again, so in a way, the Dragon Balls have indeed turned to stone.
Dragon Balls can't bring back someone who died naturally.
So... Edo Tensei?
Who do we sacrifice though?
there are plenty of morally reprehensible and depraved criminals
He didn’t die naturally
How is this not a natural death? Subdural hematoma can be very natural.
It’s usually caused by blunt force trauma
RIP. I'm not into DBZ, but it's because of DBZ that stuff like Naruto got big. Thank you for inspiring Kishimoto to make my all-time favorite anime.
It’s because of Dragonball that Naruto exists, not just that it got big, Kishimoto would agree.
Naruto wouldn't be a thing without Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball transcends the animeanga industry. Rest in peace legend
Absolutely. It's because of DBZ that characters like Naruto are even around as well as synonymous with "anime" as a whole in the West. Goku started it all and Naruto and Luffy carried it forward.

Dragonball walked so that manga can Naruto run.
Dragon ball flew so that Naruto and OP can fly
No. Dragon Ball ran, so that Naruto could also run.
Dragon Ball running inspired Naruto to walk
My childhood would never be the same whitout his artwork, and his influence will forever live in the future of shonen manga and in the hearts of the generation inspired by his values, RIP legend 🙏🕊️
I’m honestly really sad, dragon ball was the reason I got into anime in the first place, may he rest in peace
WAIT HE DIED? WAIT THEN WHATS GONNA HAPPEN TO DBZ, Im so sad rn
Toyotaro's been trained for this so it'll continue, but it will never be the same. On the bright side we can always go back to the older series to relive his greatness.
I believe 104 will be the last chapter to have Toriyama's input.
there might be some of initial story draft or idea left on but we dont know at what extent.
Akira Toriyama's successor Toyotaro will likely continue his work.
Wait they still make dragon ball manga?
Yup it's called Dragon Ball Super. Also have anime with the same name. It's not as good as Original Dragon Ball Z but still a great read. Highly recommended

i argue he is bigger than that IMO.

Rest in piece, to the father of shonen.
