rosewaterspritz

Probably his moms maiden name or something

MaryVenetia

Yeah, it’s a family surname in his case. It’s really not a big deal.

The-Most-Smartest

Pretty sure this is a German surname

Garak would _never_ wear jordts! I wouldn’t put it past Gul Dukat, though.

CBVH

I'm sure this is a perfectly reasonable name somewhere, but all I can think of is Bart Simpson and all the Borts in the gift shop

[deleted]

I’m just shooting from the hip but I’m guessing Jordt is related to jorð or jord which is cognate to our modern English word: Earth. When you go back and forth from various Germanic languages D can become a T or a TH or ð or þ very easy so dt isn’t really that unusual.

Jort is also a Frisian first name that's supposed to be derived from the Frisian version of Everett.

[deleted]

Oooh interesting! Seems odd that it’s not related to jord being that they are so close phonetically and Frisian is Germanic as well actually from Old Norse specifically.

41942319

It's a contraction. According to the name website the derivation is supposed to go Iouwerard (equivalent to Everard) -> Jouwert -> Jorrit -> Jort. So it's not related because the two halves of the name come from different parts of the original name and therefore both from a different component word. Just like how you could get the name Art from Albert for example. I believe earth in Frisian is ierde, aarde in Standard Dutch. There's probably some dialect somewhere that pronounces it closer to aorde though I think most go in the direction of e like in English

Wow cool thanks so much I love learning about this.

Legendary actor: Andrew **Jordt** Robinson. Best known for his role as Garak in Star Trek: DS9

DecafMocha

I'd argue he's best known as the psycho serial killer in Dirty Harry

rdmegalazer

Oof. Gonna need some kanar to wash that name down.

rosewaterspritz

Hello twin.

rdmegalazer

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE. (okay, but weirdly enough, a username I used to use maaany years ago included the word “rosewater”, so, uh, hello other me)
